The introduction [to this collected issue] notes: “The first lecture in this volume inaugurated the winter series, 1869, and was published in pamphlet form, but met with so limited a sale, that it was considered inexpedient to continue the experiment. ... Considerable disappointment and dissatisfaction having been expressed, at the the non-publication of the whole of the first series, the Committee determined to make arrangements for publishing each Lecture of the winter series, 1870.” The Early Closing Association was an organisation of retail workers formed in Victoria in the 1850s which had counterparts in the U.K. in the 1840s and similar organisations were founded in South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales in later years. With the object of securing improved working hours and earlier shop closing times, the organisation relied on Public Meetings and ‘moral persuasion’ A$650.00 rather than strike action. The lectures by M’Coy and Bromby are of particular interest for the ongoing debates between religion and evolution. #65569

Pp. xii, 692(last 2 blank); numerous bibliogs., index of persons, index of ships. [with] [Volume III] 1850 TO 1940. The Oceans, Islands and Polar Regions. A comprehensive reference guide to the history and literature of exploration, travel and colonization in the oceans, the islands, New Zealand and the polar regions from 1850 to the early decades of the twentieth century. Pp. x, 726(last 2 blank); numerous bibliogs., index of persons, index of regional island and general articles, index of ships. [with] [Volume IV] 1850 TO 1940. Continental Exploration. A comprehensive reference guide to the history and literature of exploration, travel and colonization in Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas from 1850 to the early decades of the twentieth century. Pp. xii, 1048(last blank); numerous bibliogs., index of persons, index of regional articles. [with] [Volume V] Invented and apocryphal narratives of travel. A comprehensive guide to invented, imaginary, apocryphal and plagiarized narratives of travel by land, sea and air, from the earliest times to the twentieth century. Pp. xii, 548(last 5 blank); numerous bibliogs., index of books, index of imaginary places, index of names. Together, 5 volumes, demy 4to, all First Editions in original cloth, gilt; each volume with multiple marker ribbons; a fine complete set in dustwrappers. (Potts Point); Hordern House; (2003-04-06-08-13). ***An ESSENTIAL reference for anyone interested in exploration, this remarkable work contains over 4500 major entries and index entries covering about 20,000 names of persons or ships noted in the text. The articles cover major expeditions, explorations, voyages and travels from the earliest recorded antiquity to 1940. There is extensive biographical information on the travellers themselves as well as their historical background. The text is fully cross-referenced with many thousands of references between articles. In addition, each article contains a bibliography of both primary and secondary sources (in many cases quite extensive) and in all there are nearly 50,000 bibliographical citations. An unexpected final addition to the splendid four-volume work on real voyages and travels, the fifth volume is a comprehensive survey of “the curious but compelling alternative literature of exploration; to imaginary, apocryphal and utopian journeys in fabulous lands; and to the abundance of invented, plagiarized and spoof narratives, many of which were accepted in their time as wholly credible but were nothing more than flights of the imagination, blatant deceptions, or monologues of doubtful authenticity” [dustwrapper blurb]. In our opinion this rather sells many of them short, which the book itself does not! Included are many accounts relating to ‘Terra Australias’ or to an undiscovered ‘Southland’. There is extensive biographical information on the writers and the imaginary travellers as well as their historical background. The text is fully cross-referenced and in addition, as for the first four volumes, each article contains a bibliography of both primary and secondary sources (in many cases quite extensive). Much of the information is here published for the first time in English and there are numerous entries covering obscure but A$650.00 real persons as well as obscure and unnoticed works of fiction which would be extremely difficult to research without this invaluable tool. . #67214

80 [White, John & Bligh, William]: MAGAZIN VON MERKWURDIGEN NEUEN REISEBESCHREIBUNGEN, aus fremden Sprachen ubersetzt und mit erlautenden Anmerkungen begleitet. Mit Kupfern und Landkarten. Funfter Band. 8vo, First Edition; pp. xviii, 136 (White’s Journal); [2], [139]-232 (Bligh’s Narrative); [2], 235-382 (Travels in Africa); [2], [385]-448 (Norris to the Kings of Dahomey); folding map as frontispiece, large folding map, 4 plates; contemporary quarter calf, with marbled sides and contrasting titlelabels on spine; (a very mild waterstain to upper portion of plates and very slight wrinkling of text leaves, but a nice, generally clean and crisp copy); rare. The frontispiece map illustrates Bligh’s Narrative, with three smaller insets. The larger map illustrates the African travels with inset of Dahomey, and the four plates are of Australian wildlife illustrating White’s Journal. This translation of White’s Journal, the first edition in German, is not in Ferguson (but see Addenda, F. 122aa for a similar, but not identical edition). Bligh’s Narrative is Ferguson 102 (a skeletal and inadequate entry only) and is also the first edition in German of Bligh’s account of the mutiny of the Bounty. Ferguson’s entry refers to a copy in the Kroepelien collection, only, but it is not listed in Du Rietz’s catalogue (Oslo, 1969). Ferguson’s collected Addenda describes (102aa) it rather better (Australian National Library copy only). See also Ferguson 130 and 145 for other similar, but not identical editions. #67131 A$750.00
