Going Native Among native cultures of the Pacific, none may be more steeped in legend and lore than New Zealand’s mighty Maori. Romanticized in films like Whale Rider, the Maori first arrived in New Zealand by canoe in the 13th century. Their culture is epitomized by fanciful artworks and carvings, elaborate tattooing and dazzling dance and performance. Princess guests can visit a traditional Maori village as an excursion from Tauranga. Maori Traditional Contemporary Dance, Tauranga Village, New Zealand

Another World New Zealand’s otherworldly Fiordland National Park is one of the world’s most breathtaking destinations — and ideal for seeing by sea on a Princess voyage. Fiordland is part of the even larger park, Te Wahipounamu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches along 280 miles of the South Island’s southwest corner with ancient forests and dramatic mountains. It’s easy to imagine this was how the world once looked — epic, haunting and pristine — as you sail through the glassy waters and towering cliffs of the park’s crown jewel, Milford Sound, famously called the “Eighth Wonder of the World” by Rudyard Kipling. Be sure to keep an eye open for endangered endemic wildlife such as the world’s only alpine parrot and the large flightless takahe bird as you gaze in awe at the majestic waterfalls that line the namesake fiords. Middle Earth When it came time for New Zealand director Peter Jackson to scout locations for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, he didn’t have to look far to find Tolkien’s mythical Middle Earth. The vast, dramatic and diverse landscapes of New Zealand provided the perfect setting for nearly every scene. Amid the bucolic farmland of the North Island, for example, you can visit Hobbiton, the iconic Hobbit village complete with inns, gardens and earthen-mound hobbit “holes.” On the South Island are the spectacular forests and rugged mountains that created such a lasting impression for a generation of moviegoers of Middle Earth. On the “In the Footsteps of The Lord of the Rings” tour in Wellington, you’ll even pay a visit to Jackson’s Weta Studios, where Gollum and other characters came to life — a Princess exclusive. Discover Tasmania More than simply an island off the coast of Australia, Tasmania is a world all its own — with a unique culture, curious wildlife and a thriving arts and food scene. Like Australia, the origins of its settlement were as a penal colony, and a spirit of rugged independence remains intact. Nature enthusiasts will be attracted to its parks and wildlife areas, perhaps looking for unusual creatures like the Tasmanian devil.

The Devil’s Work When most people think of Tasmania, one image comes to mind — the spinning, snarling Tasmanian Devil from Warner Bros. classic Looney Tunes cartoons. Real Tasmanian devils are shy marsupials on the brink of extinction. Fortunately, several conservation groups, including the Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park in Port Arthur, are dedicated to protecting these iconic creatures. Tasmanian devil

Paradise in the South Seas It’s most people’s idea of paradise — an emerald green isle emerging from warm turquoise waters beneath an impossibly blue sky. In the South Pacific, the reality is pretty close to that vision. Across the Pacific, from the Hawaiian Islands south all the way to Australia, lie jewel-like archipelagos of isles with dazzling settings, welcoming locals and unique cultures.

Scotland in the Pacific In 1774, Captain James Cook happened upon a Pacific Island whose rugged mountains reminded him of his native Scotland — so he christened the isle “New Caledonia,” after the Latin name for Scotland. As the island was a French possession up until World War II, you’re more likely to find coq au vin on a menu than haggis. But the setting is pure South Pacific, including white sand beaches and the second-longest barrier reef in the world. New Caledonia Grande Terre

On the island of Vanuatu, located between the town of Luganville and Champagne Bay, lies a stunning natural wonder — the Nanda Blue Hole. Visitors can swim in the water and look for rare creatures beneath the surface.

Papua New Guinea Cruises
PAPUA NEW GUINEA Formerly known as New Britain, Papua New Guinea has survived its share of turmoil over the past century — including volcanic eruptions and Allied bombing during World War II. Today, the island offers visitors much to see, from relics of World War II to native Tolai villages and, of course, the beautiful beaches and tropical climate that make the South Pacific famous.
Volcanology 101 Nearly all of the island archipelagos in the South Pacific are volcanic in nature — isles pushed up from the sea floor by volcanic plumes. On many islands, the remnants of a volcanic past create some of the most impressive attractions. Nowhere is that more true than on Papua New Guinea. The island’s Volcanological Observatory monitors the island’s 14 active and 23 dormant volcanoes, including those of the Rabaul Caldera, which last erupted in August 2014. The observatory is among the volcano-related sights on the isle formerly known as “New Britain,” located on the slopes of Tovanumbatir with inspiring views of Simpson Bay. And don’t miss a visit to the old Rabaul Airport, destroyed by endless waves of falling ash and smoke during the ’94 eruption, where old Japanese warplanes lie half buried in ash to this day. Dance of the Flames The Baining people are unique to the Gazelle Peninsula of East New Britain, Papua New Guinea. They are one of the earliest inhabitants of the area and are represented by three tribes in the region. Many of their customs remain intact, including their famous fire dances. Originally created to welcome the birth of a new child to the tribe, or to remember the dead, the ritual involves elaborate bark cloth masks and costumes that are created specifically for the dance, and then burned at the end. Today, the dances are an important tradition to bring together people of the tribes. Papua New Guinea

Land of the Luau One of the most popular elements of Hawaiian culture has endured the modernization and outside influences that have transformed the islands over the past century — the traditional luau feast. The luau is a banquet often celebrating special occasions, featuring hula dancing and a whole roast pig. Guests on our Hawaii voyages can experience both — on shore and on their ship.

Understanding Uluru Resting like a sleeping giant amid Australia’s stark Outback is what is perhaps the continent’s most recognizable natural feature — Uluru in the native Anangu tongue, also known as Ayers Rock. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this large sandstone rock formation is a central part of UluruKata Tjuta National Park, and it has always been a sacred place to the Aboriginal people. DE S IG NE D T O IN S P IR E AW E In Australia & New Zealand, there’s so much to see in every port. Yet you’ll also be dazzled by all the possibilities you find on board. Because each Princess ship is a sensational destination all its own. Strolling into the bustling central Atrium, you feel the last traces of stress melt away. In the European town-square-style Piazza, there’s a glass of wine with your name on it, a pianist is playing your favorite song, and you feel your breathing ease into the rhythm of freedom. And that feeling will only grow day after day — the sense that this was just what you needed, that you are exactly where you need to be. And you’ll soon find that while each port Down Under is indeed filled with fascinating sights and new experiences, coming back to your Princess ship is what you look forward to most of all.
