Description The Martin family represents a wide gamut of business activity in Naperville for over a hundred years, and was a great benefactor to the city when its last descendant, Caroline Martin--Mitchell, bequeathed two hundred and four acres of her estate. The Martin--Mitchell Mansion is the heart of Naper Settlement with enough land for a nineteenth century pioneer village to enjoy. Among other components of the estate are Naperville Central High School, Naperville Cemetery, Rotary Hill, Sportsman's Club, the public gardens and half of the von Oven scout camp. The Martin family's history in Naperville begins with the arrival from Edinburg, Scotland of George Martin, his wife Elizabeth or Betsy (Christie) Martin, and their six year old son George in 1833. George Martin's father, George, a farmer merchant, died in Leith, Scotland in 1829 and his son George, born December 24, 1783, had been a prosperous grain merchant and owner of shipping vessels sailing the Baltic and Black Seas. George and Elizabeth married July 19, 1825, and their son George was born November 30, 1826. George, Betsy and little George farmed the land in Naperville and at one time owned over 1,000 acres. When George Martin died March 22, 1841, his son took over the farm and in 1845 started quarrying limestone and manufacturing brick and tile from the clay on his land. Centennial Beach was the site of his quarries which helped build Naperville and Chicago after the Great Fire of 1871 and the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. He married Sibelia Riddler, born in 1834 in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1854. George sold some of the family land in 1847 and 1868 to develop two subdivisions called Martin's Additions. In 1857 he organized the Producers' Bank and was a member of the first village council in the same year. George and Sibelia had four children: Elizabeth (Lizzie) October 8, 1857--May 23, 1920, Katherine (Kittie) 1858--May 31, 1908, George Martin III 1862--September 28, 1925, and Carolyn (Carrie, Caroline) 1864--October 12, 1936. The growing family and the increased prosperity of the brick and tile business led George and Sibelia to leave their frame Century House and build the Victorian mansion Pinecraig in 1883. George Martin died July 15, 1889 but his family carried on the business. George's wife Sibelia died December 21, 1907 and his mother Betsy October 2, 1911. His son George III worked as a Cook County lawyer specializing in real estate and probate law. Caroline Martin married in the family home February 18, 1896. She and her husband Edward Grant Mitchell

Naperville Heritage Society Library/Archives Collections Guide to Collection (May 7, 1866--November 25, 1929) had no children and Caroline's will in 1935 bequeathed the Martin--Mitchell home, land and personal belongings to the city of Naperville. As the last direct descendant of George Martin she had enjoyed showing the community her home in 1933, the one hundredth anniversary of the Martin's arrival in Naperville, and their legacy continues to this day. This collection begins with family papers from Scotland showing the progress of the Martin grain business and receipts for personal expenses. Settling into the pioneering Naper Settlement, the family's acquisition of land and correspondence with friends and relatives in America and Scotland reveal their attempt to become prosperous despite the early death of George Martin in 1841. George Martin II becomes ingrained in Naperville as seen by his deed for a church pew at First Congregational Church in 1848 and his citizenship papers in 1849. He is like his father in his extensive correspondence, with interesting letters of introduction for him to influence Illinois legislators against removing Naperville as the DuPage County seat in 1855. Incorporation papers of the Producers' Bank with James G. Wright in 1857 and its dissolution in 1865 show the effects of the Civil War on the national economy. George's wife Sibelia receives letters from her Riddler relatives serving in the Civil War. Post Civil War prosperity is seen in the partnership papers between George Martin and William King to form the Naperville Drain Tile and Brick Works in 1873 to 1878. A new partnership arises in the Martin and von Oven Naperville Drain Tile and Brick Works in the 1880s. Articles of agreement for a railroad spur line to transport their goods follows. Architect's specifications for the Pinecraig mansion built in 1883 are a Victorian architectural treasure. With George Martin's death in 1889, papers show how the assets from Martin & von Oven were distributed among his heirs. The family members partner again with Ernst von Oven in the Articles of Partnership in 1895. A family crisis arises with the elopement of Caroline Martin and Edward Grant Mitchell, as shown by their Milwaukee marriage certificate in 1895. A wedding ceremony in the Martin home in February 1896 and a DuPage County marriage certificate show family harmony restored. An example of George Martin III's legal expertise is seen in his defense of his clients over payment of taxes to Cook County in 1899. Sibelia Martin's participation in the family business can be seen in receipts sent to her before her death in 1907. Kittie's death in 1908 is eulogized in a memorial card. Correspondence to the Martin and von Oven firm continues to 1917. A memorial card for George Martin III in 1925 and a hand written obituary for Edward Grant Mitchell by his loving wife Caroline in 1929 shed light on the family dynamics. Caroline, now the last direct descendant of George and Betsy Martin, opens her house to the community in 1933 to celebrate the family's arrival in 1833 with picture cards of her father George Martin II to give to visitors. Caroline's letter to her "dear Nurse Murphy" speaks of her loneliness and poor health on January 1, 1936, culminating in her death October 12, 1936 at the age of 74. She had written an affectionate poem to her cousin Mildred in 1935 and settled her affairs that year with her will granting the city of Naperville her extensive property and home. Follow up documents inventory her real and personal estate and document the agreements worked out by her three trustees, the city of Naperville, and contestants to her will in court decisions. The trustees' deed lists the tracts and parcels of land willed to the city in January, 1939. These are just the

Naperville Heritage Society Library/Archives Collections Guide to Collection highlights of a multifaceted, complex Naperville family dominant in their time and forever memorialized as industrious and generous.
