Archbishop Wood Summer Reading The Goal of our Summer Reading program is to foster an interest in reading and hopefully to create avid readers. To accomplish this goal we have selected a wide variety of titles, on many topics, some fiction, some non-fiction. There is also a variety of reading levels. Select a book that is of interest to you. Don’t go looking for the shortest book or the easiest reading level. If you do that you will end up not enjoying the book and not picking up another book. Research shows that students who are readers tend to get higher SAT Critical Reading scores. Reading helps improve your vocabulary also. Many of the books have a brief description with them or you can go to www.amazon.com to read about the book. A few books, the most popular books, have more than one person leading a group. Only join one group. It doesn’t matter which group you join but only join one. To join a group, click on the link on the bottom of the Wood home page. This link will take you to our Summer Reading Ning, a Social Network for our summer reading program. The Summer Reading Ning is at www.woodsummerreading2012.ning.com. After you join the Ning, join a group. Groups will be limited to 20 members so don’t wait. Everyone should join a group by June 30. After that date many of the groups will be closed and you will have to get a special invitation to join. All students must complete the summer reading requirement. If you are not able to participate in an online discussion, there are a few books that are available for a written assignment followed by a one on one discussion of the book with a teacher. If you need that information please email Mrs. Harkins at [email protected].

If you do not complete the Summer Reading requirement, you will be required to attend Reading Sessions on four Saturdays in the Fall. There will be a $50.00 charge for these make up sessions. Please note there are no test books this year. Class of 2016 Please select from the list for incoming freshmen. These books and groups are reserved just for you. The leaders are all current students, members of the Class of 2015. They are excited about leading a group discussion for you. Classes of 2015, 2014, 2013 You can select any book not listed for incoming freshmen. There are many choices. There will be some additional selections added. THERE WILL BE NO ON LINE READING TESTS. Students who Register after June 30 Most reading groups will be closed by June 30. However, there will be alternatives for you that will be given to you at the time you register. AP Students: AP Students who have a summer reading assignment will fulfill the summer reading requirement through this assignment.
