SCA HISTORY AND MODERN ABORICULTURE TOUR SCA TOur

(Tour departs at 8:00 am and returns at 5:00 pm - SCA business meeting and lunch are also included.) This tour combines history and modernization. Come and enjoy a historical church and tree tour in the Niagara region of Ontario, a place rich in American and Canadian history, and of course a trip to this part of the world must include a stop at the famous Niagara Falls. The modern part of the tour consists of touring Canada’s largest compost tea brewing facility, this compost operation uses state of the art methods and unique ingredients in ways you will find educational and informative. The tour will continue with a visit to one of Ontario’s well respected arborists and tree services; Andrew Hordyk of Arborwood Tree Service, will show us how his tree service wholistically approaches tree care and how compost tea has become a thriving and profitable compliment to the standard tree services offered by Arborwood. Spend a day with friends and colleagues learning and sharing, and experience some Canadian hospitality.

Keynote Speaker What We Don’t Know about Tree Biomechanics: A Biophysical Perspective on Why Trees Fall Down

Karl J. Niklas is the Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor of Plant Biology and a Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow at Cornell University. Niklas’ research is a biophysical approach to plant evolution, and he currently teaches courses in introductory botany, plant evolution, and biomechanics. He is the author of over 325 research articles and four books, including Plant Biomechanics (1992), The Evolutionary Biology of Plants (1997), and Plant Physics (2012). Niklas is the recipient of numerous awards including a John S. Guggenheim Fellowship, the George Gaylord Simpson Prize of the Peabody Museum (Yale University), the New York State University Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung Preis for Senior USA Scientists, the Jeanette Siron Pelton Award for studies in plant morphogenesis, and the Botanical Society of America’s 1996 Lifetime Merit Award and 2006 Centennial Medal. He served as the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Botany (1995–2004) and as the president of the Botanical Society of America (2008).

You may be asked for proof that you are attending a meeting or convention so it may be useful to have a copy of the meeting agenda and/or registration on hand. This may also be useful when returning to the U.S. should a similar question be asked.

Climate Lake Ontario moderates Toronto’s weather causing it to have one of the mildest climates in Canada. In the spring and summer, temperatures range from 15°C (60°F) to 25°C (80°F).

Financial information Sales Tax- The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) is a 13% tax that is applied to most purchases of taxable supplies of goods and services in Ontario. Tipping- For service you are happy with, a 15-20% tip on the pretax bill is a standard expression of appreciation when dining out in Toronto. Tips are also expected for services such as a taxi ride, etc. and the same percentage applies. Currency Exchange- Toronto’s currency is the Canadian Dollar (CAD). Coins are used for denominations under $5. U.S. Dollars are accepted in most Toronto businesses; however, you will receive change in CAD. Currency exchange is available at banks and kiosks throughout the city and at the airport. Cash machines are also available in most banks, hotels, and shopping centers. Keep in mind that exchange rates will differ from merchant to merchant.
