Welcome to the 23rd Annual Maine Recycling and Solid Waste Conference & Trade Show! For the past 30 years, Maine Resource Recovery Association (MRRA) has made it our mission to promote environmentally sound and economically sustainable solutions in the recycling and solid waste industry for municipalities throughout Maine. This year, our theme “Beyond Recycling: Materials Management and A Circular Economy” represents the next chapter for the industry and for MRRA. The world of recycling and solid waste is dynamic and continues to evolve… and so must MRRA. Now is not a time to sit still in the ever changing landscape of recycling and solid waste options. Innovation is necessary to close the loop. Our first step is to increase MRRA’s accessibility. In the past six months, MRRA has developed a new and more user friendly website and have modernized our brand with a new logo. Both are being seen at this year’s conference for the first time. We are also ramping up our education and outreach efforts as we strive to become THE statewide recycling resource for municipalities, businesses, and individuals alike. The core of our organization is and will always be our valued members. This annual conference is paramount to our work in education and outreach. MAINE RESOURCE RECOVERY ASSOCIATION WELCOMES A NEW DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS AND DEVELOPMENT Maine Resource Recovery Association is pleased to announce the newest addition to our staff, Shelby Wright, Director of Communications and Development. If you haven’t met Shelby, chances are you will soon. She is not shy. Shelby comes to us with over 20 years of experience in education/outreach and coalition building. She will be responsible for reinvigorating and expanding the scope of MRRA and our work. Since joining MRRA in Novem-

ber, she has been the driving force behind MRRA’s rebranding and outreach efforts. She has also toured several facilities across the state to learn more about the industry from the ground up. Starting with the new logo and website, Shelby hopes to springboard our outreach efforts into communities across Maine. She will be working with businesses, schools and partner organizations alike to promote recycling and sustainable business development.

One of the most impressive sustainable practices at the Samoset is the composting policy, which benefits the resort, guests and the local community. Organic food waste from the kitchen is sent to Earthly Fertilizers, a local farm located in Appleton. The food is then converted to compost and supplied to area farms as soil amendments for their crops and animal feed. A portion of the compost is also returned to the resort and used in the flower and

herb gardens. Executive Chef Tim Pierce and his culinary staff use these flowers and herbs to decorate plates and complement signature dishes, which also showcase fresh ingredients from local farms, artisans and fishermen whenever possible. The Samoset’s composting program is a prime example of how Maine resorts and community programs can work together to reduce the waste in our landfills while providing resources that support local farms. Samoset Resort also partners with Clean the World by donating guests’ leftover soap and shampoo to be recycled. Rather than discarding these products to overflowing landfills, the soap is melted down and sterilized before being distributed to impoverished countries around the world.

Jerry Powell is the owner of three magazines (Resource Recycling, Plastics Recycling Update and E-Scrap News). He edits Resource Recycling. In addition, he aids in the management of three annual conferences, The E-Scrap Conference, The Plastics Recycling Conference, and The Resource Recycling Conference, several of which are the world’s largest in their fields.

As Managing Director for MMBC, Allen oversees the first 100% Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program in Canada where industry assumes full financial and managerial responsibility for the residential recycling system.

Previously Jerry founded and managed a recycling consulting firm for a decade and founded and managed a recycling business

in Portland, Oregon for more than eight years. He is a past three-time chair of the board of the National Recycling Coalition and the three-time chair of the board of a state recycling association. He has spoken on waste management and recycling issues in 48 states and five Canadian provinces.

Allen has extensive experience in sustainability and extended producer responsibility, having held leadership roles with the Retail Council of Canada and the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors, advancing those industries’ responses to a range of complex sustainability issues including climate change, sustainable packaging, EPR programs,

responsible sourcing, and animal welfare. Allen has sat as a Director for several stewardship agencies in Canada including Encorp Pacific, the Electronic Products Recycling Association, Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba, and the Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association. Allen is also the Managing Director of the Multi-Material Stewardship Western (MMSW) Program in Saskatchewan

MRRA Presents: Comedians Karen Morgan and Robbie Printz Tuesday, May 3rd at 7:30pm Karen was born and raised in Athens, Georgia but now calls Maine home. A former trial attorney, she began her professional comedy career as a Finalist on Nickelodeon Television’s “Search for the Funniest Mom in America.” Her comedy can be heard on Sirius XM Radio and nationally syndicated radio shows.

A fixture on the Boston comedy circuit, Robbie got his start in 1988 and has been performing ever since. He made the rounds on the Cable Comedy shows, including MTV, A&E and Comedy Central. He won the Boston Comedy Festival and was named the Best Comedian in Boston, by the Improper Bostonian.

Still licensed to practice law in Maine and Georgia, Karen lives in Cumberland, Maine with her husband, three kids and a big dumb dog.

Laughter is the best medicine, so go see Robbie Printz and laugh about life, or laugh at him about his life. Either way you’ll feel better.
