Anchorage Waldorf School Annual Report School Year 2012-2013

Letter From the Board of Trustees Dear School Friends, Families, and Supporters, With each annual report comes the satisfying task of looking back to review what we accomplished. As I revisit the school year of 2012-2013, I see a theme of planting seeds of growth and change. At the end of the 2013 school year, we had several changes to our Faculty and Administration: Zinna Heavener finished a long career as school Administrator, lovingly guiding us through many school eras. Jann Mylet also finished up a great year with us in the Enrollment, Marketing, and Development department. Renee Parks finished an 8-year teaching cycle with the graduation of that wonderful group of students (and parents!). Laura Thorpe and Iryna Hampton handed over the reins for movement and Russian classes. Elke Coon, our handwork and woodwork teacher, turned the program over to thrive in the care of another. And board members Joe Earsley, Chris McMichael, and Jim Anderson ended their long terms of service. Our hearts are filled with thanks for these wonderful people. We have been blessed by their care and dedication. The school also filled the vacated spots with wonderful and talented new additions. Donna Kendy, Tomas Jensen, and Leigh Patton were hired as Faculty members; Svetlana Burton was hired as our Russian specialty teacher; Joy Rivera as our new Business Manager; and Jeanne Larsen as Interim Administrator! We couldn’t have asked for better additions to the school. Thank you all who served on the 2012-2013 hiring committees tasked with completing this important work! Another seed of growth and change in 2012-2013 included addressing municipal requirements through several construction projects. Inside the main building, sprinkler piping was installed in all corridors and rooms. Outside the building a huge (and I mean huge!) trench was dug in front of the school to connect to the city waterline, and then refilled again. Trenches for electrical lines were dug and light poles installed in the parking lot. The back drive up the hill to the kindergarten

yard and in front of the Dogwood cottage was paved. This work occurred all thanks to heroic efforts of community members like Matt French (Premier Earthwork), Steve MacRae, Tom Zietlow (HZA), Tony SlatonBarker (Coffman Engineers), Brian Meissner (ECI/Hyer), Dohnn Wood, and a special alumni-sprinkler-funding team led by Mary Lee Plumb-Mentjes. This work also happened because of a super-dedicated group of handy-men and handy-women who put in time as spring rolled into summer on campus beautification (planting the seeds for today’s WalDads/HandyGals group). Thank you, one and all! Another of the year’s successes was the 2012 Fall Gala, “Inspiring Possibilities.” Through this event the school raised over $120,000, including $49,000 donated specifically during “fund-a-need,” which focused on the heart and soul of our school—our teachers and Waldorf education! Many seeds were sown for new committee leadership of and new family participation in this important fundraising event. Thank you to the Gala Committee and all supporters for making this event such a financial and social success. And lastly, the Board turned its attention inward to strengthening our organization through a deep look at our governance model and how leadership works together. Seeds planted in 2012-2013 are growing fruit today! On behalf of the Board, I want to thank all the remarkable people who made this year of continued growth happen for our school. With all of your help, the Anchorage Waldorf School is creating an incredible learning environment where we realize the school’s purpose “to spark and nurture the highest potential in humanity.” Sincerely, Carla SlatonBarker President, Board of Trustees

Our Purpose: To spark and nurture the highest potential in humanity Core Values: Childhood: Childhood is the foundation of a healthy, productive life. We honor, protect and nurture the physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual being of the developing child. Existence of Spirit: We acknowledge the existence of spirit and respect all paths to understanding. Imagination and Creativity: We believe that imagination and creativity are fundamental. Art, music, and movement are integral to our curriculum. Community and Social Responsibility: We value an atmosphere of social renewal and stewardship in which individuals flourish and can contribute to the greater good of all. Independence: We value the freedom to educate according to the needs of each child, so they may become free, independent thinkers.

Letter from the Faculty As guardians and shepherds of the children at Anchorage Waldorf School, the Faculty is charged each year with the responsibility of looking with fresh eyes upon the children before them and preparing a curriculum that has been imbued with a sense of purpose and developmental insight to meet each child where they are. Here, the children in our care are not only met on an academic level, but on an emotional, social, and spiritual level. Within this amazing curriculum is the freedom and flexibility that allows Waldorf Education to truly flourish and remain highly distinguished among other curricula. To be sure we are upholding the curriculum outlined by Dr. Rudolf Steiner, many of our faculty members travel yearly to conferences and trainings, keeping themselves abreast of relevant thoughts and new teaching, as well as staying knowledgeable about how and why other Waldorf Schools do what they do. It is part of ensuring that the students who leave our school after eighth grade are well-rounded and can successfully compete academically in the public world to which most of our students enter. Another aspect of our job as teachers is our work in the social realm. Last year marked our third and final year with the Social Inclusion program with Kim John Payne, author of “Simplicity Parenting,” and the Center for Social Sustainability. We have committed to taking those teachings and through the Social Health Coordinating Group, a cohesive group of teachers, parents, and administrators, are holding the ever-important social well being of our students and parents in light and love. This group, along with Parent Council, is continuing to support and hold several lectures and workshops for the parents of the greater Anchorage area! Through our work together as colleagues and our collaboration with parents, experts, and fellow teachers, the Faculty of the Anchorage Waldorf School is committed to the highest and best education for each and every child. We are committed to helping unfold, develop, and nurture our students so that they may reach their greatest potential—allowing them the possibility of graduating as happy, well-balanced and self-confident citizens of the world. It is a privilege and an honor to devote ourselves to this task. Renee Parks, Faculty Chair

Letter from the Parent Council Dear School Families, Friends and Supporters, The Parent Council had a very full and successful 2012-2013 school year. Parent Council is a committee made up of a parent representative from each class (pre-K through 8), and one representative from each of the following: Administration, Faculty and the Board of Trustees. Sharing a home-cooked lunch during our monthly meetings, we plan activities to enhance the community life at the school. Our goals are to encourage active, positive communication; to inspire parent involvement; to provide a forum for parents’ ideas; to coordinate social and educational events; and to strengthen our connection to the Anchorage community. Here are a few highlights of the 2012-2013 school year: Social Events: • Various Monthly Socials (Social Teas, Halloween Parties, etc. hosted by each grade) • Barn Dance (band included student musicians) • All-School Family Skates at Cheney Lake • Grandparents Day • Staff Appreciation Luncheons • End-of-Year Picnic Support for Educational Events: • Faculty Presentations on various aspects of Waldorf education • Workshops on Gardening and Felting, etc.

Fundraising Support: • Annual Fall Gala • Chicago Waldorf Calendar and Card Sales • Barnes & Noble Book Fair • Annual Giving • May Faire Community Projects: • Park Adoption, Baxter Bog (including student-generated interpretive signs) • Bike Trail Adoption, Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. I would like to thank the many Parent Council representatives and community members who participated in these activities. We are very fortunate to be part of such a supportive community. Sincerely, Clo Giffen Parent Council Chair
