A N EWSLETTER FOR M EMBERS & F RIENDS OF M OUNT O LIVET L UTHERAN C HURCH Believing, Belonging, Becoming

JANUARY 2016 VOLUME 4, ISSUE 1

An Invitation to Grow

Believing Make 2016 a year to grow in every area of your life – physically, mentally and spiritually. See Pastor Johnson’s update on page 3 about the ways Mount Olivet is growing and the opportunity to look back and forward with gratitude for what has been and all that shall be.

3

Belonging The Mount Olivet Shepherding program sets goal to reach out and contact all members in the new year. If you are interested in finding out more about our neighborhood shepherding program, see page 5.

5

A new year brings about much discussion of what the future holds as we hope and dream for the year to come. Read Pastor Enoch’s devotion on New Year’s resolutions (page 4) or Pastor Youngdahl’s invitation on Finding Balance in 2016 (page 5) and discover how the stepping stones of a new year can strengthen your spiritual life as well. As you look forward to your year ahead, consider these 4 steps to growing in your spiritual life in the new year: 1.

Becoming Step out of the traffic and busyness of your weekly routine. Step into the Spiritual Oasis as your schedule allows and enjoy a place free from distractions and interruptions. Join us Mondays at our West Campus or Tuesdays at our Mpls Campus.

8

www.mtolivet.org

– Join us for a Bible study or service project. If you have a hard time hearing God through the busyness of life, carve out time to reflect and pray at our weekly Spiritual Oasis, held at West on Mondays and Mpls on Tuesdays. 2. TAKE BABY STEPS TO MAKE A TINY HABIT – If your worship attendance is less than regular, commit to worshipping one more Sunday a month, or join us at our weekly Prayer & Praise services Wednesdays at 10am (Mpls). 3. HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE – Tell others about your plans. Meet with a pastor a develop your plan to grow spiritually in the new year, or invite a friend to worship with you. 4. FOCUS ON THE CARROT, NOT THE STICK – Be kind to yourself. Remember these steps are meant to enhance your relationship with God, not to be a perfect person. PICK ONE THING TO TRY

Update from Pastor Johnson What a glorious Christmas season we had! Thank you for inviting your friends and family to worship with us. Those of you who were able to join us at one of our 56 Advent / Christmas services know the community at Mount Olivet is alive and well, with an estimated 34,488 worshipping with us at one of our two campuses. Thank you to everyone who helped make the Christmas season so spectacular at Mount Olivet – the ushers, the parking lot attendants, the 1000+ choir members, the 200 people who volunteered and served 1400+ pounds of lutefisk, the Congregation Council who assisted in our finance office, the greeters, the kitchen helpers for our many fellowship events, the Altar Guild and more – thank you! This Christmas, Carol and I have been the recipients of many cards, expressions of thanks, and a multitude of kindnesses. We love “Christmas at Mount Olivet.” The glow of Christmas leads us into the new year. A new year means many things in a church. The business of the church dominates the calendar – annual meetings, budgets adopted, reports received. Our three task forces (transition planning, West building plan review, and the same for the James project at Mpls) will be starting up soon. Yes, God works through mundane things like budgets, audits, elections, and meetings. It is true that, “God so loved the world that he didn’t send a committee!” Yet, wherever a committee gathers with Jesus present, the collective wisdom and gifts of many individuals interact to advance the work of the Kingdom. God bless all those willing to serve. It is not just the business of the church, but Adult Learning starts up again, and I call your attention to the superb offerings available. Make 2016 a year to grow in every area of our lives – physically, mentally and spiritually. As we enter a time of looking back and looking forward, I recall the words of Dag Hammarskjold, “For all that has been, thanks! To all that shall be, Yes!”

Gentle Wisdom

As the calendar turns over to another year, most people start thinking about what they did or didn’t do the past year, and what they would like for the New Year to bring. Some people make resolutions or goals. Others might simply spend some time in prayerful meditation consulting God for what’s next. Whatever your personal habits and spiritual disciplines might be, thank goodness we have the Bible as a key tool for guidance and wisdom. My hope is that we use our Bibles more readily in 2016! I wonder what it would look like if we would be willing to ask God to help us carve out some time as we seek what God’s will is for our lives? All this is to say, sometimes we may not really know what is best for us … we may think it best to get up early to exercise, but maybe for a day the best self-care is that you sleep in. May God direct our thinking to live out his will to the best of our ability. Thy will be done. Amen. – PASTOR ENOCH

Finding Balance Why do people make New Year’s resolutions? Sure, we want to lose weight, get into shape, eat healthier, work less, keep the house cleaner than it’s been, read the Bible more often, watch less television, and stay in touch with our friends better. But why do we want to do these things? Maybe something is out of balance in our lives, and in order to achieve balance once again, we need to make changes to our lifestyle by adding or subtracting to it. So this means less junk food, more exercise, less laziness, more communication, less stressful situations, more time with God. Therefore, the beginning of a New Year is the perfect stepping stone to change. It gives us the opportunity to start over in order to see if change will make a difference in the way that we experience life. In the fourth chapter of Luke, Jesus makes his own resolution: “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; for I was sent for this purpose.” In other words, Jesus came to bring balance to our lives. Amidst the chaos, turmoil, distractions, and disobedience we experience in our lives, Jesus delivers God’s unfading and unconditional love to all people. As New Year’s resolutions are discussed, may we agree to make time to nurture our relationship with God. Turn to the one who came to us as a baby born in a stable. Turn to the one who gave himself up on the cross on our behalf. For it is in Jesus that we place our hope. It is in Jesus that we truly find balance with God. – PASTOR YOUNGDAHL

What do “inspired” and “authoritative” mean? How do we discover truth in God’s Word? What does it mean for us to be “people of the Word”? And how do we deal with the fact that our interpretations and the interpretations of other faithful Christians often differ? Cost: Donation. Register: www. mtolivet.org. Join DR. MARK THRONTVEIT, Elva B. Lovell Chair of Old Testament, Luther Seminary, as together we explore these questions and more. The last evening of this series will be open to your questions during an “Ask the Prof” session. Death and Resurrection Thurs 1/28 & 2/4 7-8:30pm, Mpls Rm 482-86. Death is the fate of us all. But the Bible insists the faithfulness, kindness, and mercy of God extend beyond the grave and offer us new life in Christ. This a promise we can cling to every time we experience death’s many faces. This class, led by DR. MICHAEL CHAN, Luther Seminary, takes up some of the most basic but significant questions: According to the Bible, what does it mean to die? What does it mean that we will be resurrected? Why is it that, when we look across our world, we see so much death and so little resurrection? Over two sessions, we explore these questions in great detail, paying particular attention to how the biblical texts instruct us on these matters. Cost: $10. Register: www.mtolivet.org.

LTM Pastor’s Intro: 1&2 Timothy Mon 1/4 7-8pm Mpls Rm 482-86. Whether or not you participate in a Living the Message small group, you are welcome to attend PASTOR CORNILS’ introduction to 1 & 2 Timothy – letters from Paul to leaders in the early church. No cost. No registration. LIVING THE MESSAGE is an all-congregation, Bible-focused movement to make Bible discovery accessible, convenient, and welcoming. Once a month, small groups meet to talk about a book of the Bible and enjoy fellowship. Groups are based on neighborhoods, common interests, or simply the convenience of a meeting place and time. They meet in homes, coffee shops, church spaces, or wherever works best for the group. Each month, a “pastor’s introduction” is offered for small group facilitators and anyone else who is interested. Small group discussion guides and notes from the pastor’s introductions are available at www.mtolivet.org. To join a LTM small group or form a new one, contact Carol Throntveit 612.767.2246 [email protected].

MObile Faith: Winter Classes If you are enthusiastic about the topics of study listed here, but can’t commit to them due to snowbird travel, calendar conflicts, or other responsibilities, we have another option for you. MObile Faith online learning makes faith-based education available to you whenever and wherever you can dedicate some time to deepening your relationship with Christ. Ten minutes of study here, five minutes of viewing on an online video there, a few more moments of online discussion, and you are well on your way to completing a course and stretching your faith. Check out one of our four featured courses for Winter 2016: • “Animate: Bible 2” focuses on the “good news” of the Gospel. • “Everyday Spiritual Practices” shows how deepening your faith can be as simple as “checking in” with God throughout the day. • “Redemptive Charity” considers how we can best serve as Jesus’ hands and feet in the world when it comes to problems of poverty, unemployment, and scarcity. • “Lent for Families” helps us better commit to making Lent a part of family life and more effectively deepen our children’s belief in the importance of this yearly event. For $20, you get access to unlimited MObile Faith classes for a whole year. And part of your subscription helps provide free MObile Faith access for Mount Olivet’s 18- to 22-year-olds, helping them stay connected to their church home as they journey into adulthood. Parents Share Parents Share is a weekly gathering of parents, nannies, and grandparents on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11am at Mount Olivet Mpls Campus room 394. Great nursery care is provided for the children. Coffee is on and parents come for parenting wisdom, understanding, sanity, Kleenex, and high, holy hilarity. It is the single most welcoming group of people I’ve ever known. Every Wednesday morning for 37 years, I’ve had the privilege of running this group and discovering a living example of Jesus’ proclamation, “Behold, I make all things new” (Rev. 21:5). Each and every week, it is a new creation. New people arrive. New issues surface. New gifts appear. New ministry is done, and faith is formed in every participant and in the children God has entrusted to their care. Whoever comes, they share challenges, triumphs, doubts, personal disasters, daily miracles, and lived wisdom about all it means to raise a child of God faithfully. Over the years, parents claim that this group saved their lives. If you don’t have young children, you may love some kids. Or you may know someone who has kids and needs to know that there is a safe and welcoming space for them. No membership or registration required. Just come as you are, knowing you will leave better equipped for the most important task God calls us to do – raising the children of God. – MARILYN SHARPE

Looking Back. L We have loved participating in the Adopt a Grandparent program because it has been great to connect with the residents at the Mount Olivet and Careview Home. Another highlight of the year has been learning new songs in Chancel Choir and being able to perform them! We can’t wait to get back to Church this new year to see Lucinda Emmen & Paige Shinall our youth leaders, pastors and friends at confirmation. It has been so great being involved in all that Mount Olivet has to offer and learning more about God and our faith. – LUCINDA EMMEN & PAIGE SHINALL It has been great being involved in all of the High School activities this year at Mount Olivet. Cathedral Choir and Hi-League on Sunday nights are two of my favorites. I have loved continuing the relationships with my existing church friends and make new ones! I’m looking Bella Peters forward to making my faith a big part of my new year and getting back into the events at activities at church. – BELLA PETERS I had a great time at the Chancel Choir Gustavus Retreat this fall. It was fun to see the college kids from Mount Olivet and have them hang out with us there. I am looking forward to the other events that we will have this spring especially the Lockout at the end of the year! – JOEY BUCKLEY

I have had a lot of change over the past year but Mount Olivet has been a constant. This year I have met a lot of new people through HiLeague programs and have made amazing new friends. It has also been great to be able to stay in touch with my Confirmation class. I look forward to coming back to church this new year to learn new songs in choir and continue growing the relationships I have formed. – ZOE PARISH

Thank You for Sharing Christmas! Thank you to our Sunday School and The Way families for sharing Christmas with local families in need. Because of your kindness, Pastor Linton Scott and his On-Call Ministry delivered warm clothes, needed household items, and fun toys and games to local families. Pastor Bill MacLean and Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People (VEAP) also had a wonderful donation for the Holiday Store at VEAP so parents could pick out gifts for their children. Thank you for participating in this annual event and sharing so generously with our neighbors.

The FREE Babygarten sample class is Thur 1/7 9:45-10:45am, Mpls Nursery. The regular class will be Thur 1/14-2/18 9:45-10:45am, Mpls Nursery. As a future elementary school teacher, this was the perfect way for me to spend the summer. I have learned so much, from classroom management strategies to ideas for decorating my future classroom. This summer has been an absolute blessing. ... Thank you so much to Mount Olivet and the Children and Family Ministry Team for this opportunity and thanks to the members of the Mount Olivet community for allowing me to spend the summer having a blast with their kids!
