He completed a PhD in neuroscience in human Schwann cell biology at the University of Miami during his residency. He is a professor of neurosurgery at the University of Miami - Miller School of Medicine, chief of neurosurgery and the University of Miami Hospital and is the chief of the neurospine service at Jackson Memorial hospital. Dr. Levi is the Director of the AANS Goodman Oral Board Preparation: Neurosurgery Review by Case Management course. His clinical and research interests are spinal disorders and in particular spinal cord injury as well as peripheral nerve disorders.

Dr. Alonso is from Hobart, Indiana. He received his A.B. degree magna cum laude from Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana, and his MD degree with honors from the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. He served an internship and residency in internal medicine at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was Chief Resident. He served another residency in neurology at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston, Texas. He served a third residency in neurology at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Alonso is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and he is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the Indiana Neurology Society, and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. His special interests include cerebral vascular disease, stroke, headaches, and critical care neurology.

CYNTHIA L. BODKIN, MD

She attended medical school at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. Internship, neurology residency and clinical neurophysiology fellowship were completed at Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, FL. She then continued with a sleep medicine fellowship at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Dr. Bodkin is currently an Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology at Indiana University where her focuses are in neuromuscular disorders and sleep medicine.

DAVID B. COHEN, MD

VIVEK R. DESHMUKH, MD

Deshmukh graduated from the University of Florida College of Medicine and completed his neurosurgical training at the Barrow Neurological Institute. At the BNI, he obtained infolded fellowships in Spine and Cerebrovascular/Skull Base surgery as well as a dedicated fellowship in Endovascular Neurosurgery. He is currently Director of Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery at Providence Brain Institute and is a member of Microneurosurgical Consultants in Portland, Oregon.

Dr. Fuchs completed the MD-PhD program at Duke University, and then completed his neurosurgery residency at Duke University Medical Center. After a fellowship in Pediatric Neurosurgery at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, he returned to Duke where he has been the Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery Services, and is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery. His practice is devoted to pediatric neurosurgery, with special interest in pediatric brain tumors, hydrocephalus, neuroendoscopy and spina bifida.

KEVIN J. GIBBONS, MD

An accomplished surgical educator and clinical researcher, Dr. Gibbons is considered an expert lecturer in neurosurgical education and patient management for residents and surgeons at the national level. Areas of authority include the surgical treatment of brain, spinal and pituitary tumors, complex cervical spine disorders, critical care, and adult hydrocephalus. Dr. Gibbons is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS) and underwent fellowship training in critical care. He directs the department's neurological critical care service as well as the skull base clinical service and skull base laboratory. He is the residency program director, and member of numerous professional societies, including the prestigious Society of Neurological Surgeons. Dr. Gibbons also serves as president of the Faculty Council of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University at Buffalo, New York, and as executive officer of the medical staff of Kaleida Health.

MICHAEL W. GROFF, MD

JAMES S. HARROP, MD

JASON H. HUANG, MD

He is a board certified neurosurgeon and Chief of Neurosurgery at Highland Hospital. He is currently Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at University of Rochester Medical Center with an active extramural funded research laboratory including a recent R01 grant from NIH. His clinical and research interests include neurotrauma, complex spine and peripheral nerves. He is also a member of United States Army Reserves and was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2008.

JACK I. JALLO, MD, PhD, FACS

Dr. Jack Jallo is a Professor and the Vice Chair for Academic Services in the Department of Neurological Surgery, as well as the Director of the Division of Neurotrauma and Critical Care, at Thomas Jefferson University’s Jefferson Medical College, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Jallo was awarded his medical doctorate in 1990 from The George Washington University. He went on to Temple University to complete an internship in general surgery, a residency in neurosurgery, and a fellowship in neurotrauma/critical care, as well as a PhD in physiology. Dr. Jallo is a prolific writer and lecturer on the topics of traumatic brain injury, closed head injuries, spinal cord injuries, and surgical guidelines and techniques, among many other specialized topics. While employed at Temple University School of Medicine, prior to coming to Jefferson Medical College, Dr. Jallo was a member of the Temple University $1 Million Research Award Club. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Royal Society of Medicine and has been listed in Best Doctors in America since 2003.

Dr. Jea graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine, and completed his general surgery internship and neurosurgery residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. He subsequently completed a fellowship in Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He then joined the pediatric neurosurgery practice at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. His clinical interests include complex pediatric spine disease, including congenital, trauma, tumor, and deformity.

THOMAS J. LEIPZIG, MD

Dr. Leipzig received his M.D. degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Since he completed his neurosurgical training at the University of Chicago Medical Center, he has been in practice with the Goodman-Campbell Brain & Spine (formerly Indianapolis Neurosurgical Group). Dr. Leipzig has a special interest in patients with cerebrovascular problems. He is an affiliate member of the Indiana University School of Medicine, past president of the Indiana State Neurosurgical Society and is currently the director of the AANS Weekend Update Course and a member of the AANS Maintenance of Certification/Continuing Medical Education Committee and the Education and Practice Management Committee. He has also served as a faculty member for this course since 1998.

G. Michael Lemole, Jr., MD, FACS

He is the Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at the University of Arizona (UA) Department of Surgery and University Medical Center. He serves as co-director of the UA Center for Sinonasal and Skull Base Tumors. His research and clinical interests include diseases of the cranial base.

PETER B. LETARTE, MD

During this time he practiced in various austere environments in the field and at sea. His current focus is on the delivery of Neurotrauma care in pre-hospital and austere environments. He is the Head of Neurosurgery at Edward G. Hines Veterans Hospital in Hines Illinois.

Dr. Neimat completed his medical training at Duke University. He completed his neurosurgical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital followed by a fellowship in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto. Dr. Neimat is currently at Vanderbilt University where his focus is deep brain stimulation surgery, epilepsy surgery and the surgical treatment of pain. His principal research interest is the investigation of physiological mechanisms of emotional encoding in the brain.

PARAG G. PATIL, MD, PHD

A native of Pennsylvania, he attended MIT, where he received a BS in electrical engineering. Upon graduation, he was awarded a Marshall Scholarship to study Philosophy and Economics at Magdalen College, Oxford University. On his return to the US, Dr. Patil pursued combined medical and doctoral studies in biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University. His doctoral dissertation focused upon the presynaptic regulation of voltage-gated calcium channels. The study of signaling between neurons led to a strong clinical interest in neurosurgery. During residency at Duke University, he was awarded an NIH postdoctoral fellowship in neuroprosthetic devices. Following residency, Dr. Patil obtained additional clinical expertise through a fellowship in functional and deep brain stimulation surgery with Dr. Andres Lozano at the University of Toronto. His current neurosurgical practice includes functional neurosurgery (DBS, SCS, MVD, Ablative Procedures for Pain), tumors, and spine. His research in neuromodulation and neuroprosthetic devices is funded by the NIH and philanthropic foundations.

Peter A. Rasmussen, MD, is Director of the Cerebrovascular Center at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Rasmussen’s clinical interests are in hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke, primarily focusing on cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and occlusive intracranial atherosclerotic disease. He maintains a busy practice offering patients either open microsurgery or endovascular, minimally invasive treatment options. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison, Wisconsin, completed his residency in neurosurgery at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, completed fellowship training in interventional neuroradiology/endovascular neurosurgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, as well as a fellowship in microsurgical treatment of cerebrovascular disease also at the Cleveland Clinic. He joined the faculty at the Cleveland Clinic in 2000. He has authored numerous scientific papers and book chapters. Currently he is an ad hoc editor for the Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, and American Journal of Neuroradiology. During his career, Dr. Rasmussen has maintained an active interest in applied or translational research acting as the Co-Director of the Endovascular Neurosurgery Research Laboratory. He is an active member of many professional organizations including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Society of Neuroradiology, Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery, and the Joint Sections on Neurotrauma, Critical Care and Cerebrovascular Surgery. Dr. Rasmussen is a past Vice Chair of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Cerebrovascular Section, and has been appointed as a fellow to both the American Heart Association (FAHA) and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (FAANS).

DAVID I. SANDBERG, MD

THOMAS B. SCULLY, MD

He has recently been accepted as a member in the prestigious Western Neurosurgical Society. In addition, Dr. Scully serves on the Board of Directors for the Pima County Medical Society and is on the Legislative affairs committee for the Stat of Arizona. Dr. Slavin went to medical school at Azerbaijan State Medical Institute, trained in neurosurgery at Central Institute for Post-Graduate Training of Physicians, Moscow (1988-1992); University of Illinois at Chicago (1994-2001) and did a fellowship at Oregon Health and Sciences University. Currently, Dr. Slavin is a Professor in Department of Neurosurgery of the University of Illinois at Chicago. His clinical practice is almost equally divided between general and functional neurosurgical cases. Robert J. Spinner, MD, is Professor of Neurologic Surgery, Orthopedics and Anatomy at the Mayo Clinic where he is a peripheral nerve surgeon. He completed full residency programs in orthopedics (Duke University) and neurosurgery (Mayo Clinic) and a 1 year peripheral nerve fellowship with David Kline and a 6 month traveling fellowship to several international centers as a CNS Cushing Fellow. LYNDA J-S YANG, MD, PhD
