APSI – Plastic Surgeon for Year 2012 “Dr. K. S. Shekar Endowment Award”

Prof. K. S. Goleria of Mumbai shall be receiving this award at Lucknow. Prof Goleria is Plastic Reconstructive & Cranio-facial Surgeon at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre Mumbai and Shushrusha Citizen Co-operative Hospital Ltd. He is also Visiting Plastic Surgeon at B.A.R.C. Hospital, Mumbai. Past Hon. Principal Medical Officer & Plastic Surgeon, Ramakrishna Mission Hospital, Bombay, Dr. Goleria has been past adviser to Maharashtra Public Service Commission. He authored Book on “The Management of Hemangiomas and Vascular Malformations of Head and Neck”, published by Jaypee Brothers. He developed and refined “A SINGLE STAGE REPAIR OF UNILATERAL CLEFT LIP AND PALATE” and also evolved a “COST-EFFECTIVE PROGRAM OF THE MANAGEMENT OF UNILATERAL CLEFT LIP AND PALATE”. (Mukherjee Oration of the APSI and a Presentation at the 8th Pacific Congress of International Confederation for Plastic, Re-constructive and Aesthetic Surgery). He also developed a single stage repair of Bi-lateral Cleft Lip and Palate. Dr. Goleria Pioneered Introduction of a single procedure trans-glandular repair of Hypospadias in India as early as in 1971, and later was instrumental in development of Cranio-facial Surgery in India in and after 1983. He retired as Hon. Prof. & Head, Department of Plastic Surgery, K.E.M. Hospital & Seth G. S. Medical College, Mumbai. He is past President, Association of Plastic Surgeons of India and was Chairman of Board of Trustees, Association of Plastic Surgeons of India. He has been Examiner, M. Ch. (Plastic Surgery) to the University of Bombay, P.G.I. Chandigarh and the Universities of Delhi, Gujarat, Jaipur, Lucknow, Madras, Madurai, Nagpur & Pune. Ethicon Visiting Professor in Plastic Surgery - Prof. G. S. Kalra – Jaipur Dr. G.S.Kalra was born on. 11 Nov 1958. He is senior Surgeon / consultant at the SMS Medical College & Hospital Jaipur, and Professor of Plastic Surgery. Dr. G.S. Kalra is a medical graduate from the prestigious King Georges Medical College, Lucknow, where he did his post-graduation (MS) in general surgery under the able guidance of an eminent surgeon, Professor Dr. P.C. Dubey. Dr. G.S.Kalra had his further training in plastic surgery and did super specialization M.Ch. under Professor S.K. Bhatnagar .He was trained in the field of craniofacial surgery by Prof. Ian T. Jackson of the Mayo clinic USA. Further He was trained in the field of micro vascular surgery by Dr. Robert Acland of USA. He has delivered several lecture at national and international seminars and presented more than 100 research papers. He has published several new technics and published more than 20 research paper in national and international Journals.

Dr. Lokesh Kumar is a post graduate in Plastic surgery Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research Chandigarh. He has worked at Safdarjung Hospital and Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. He got trained at Canniesburn Hospital Glasgow UK. He is presently working as senior consultant in department of plastic surgery at Indraprastha Apollo hospital New Delhi, India. Dr. Lokesh Kumar has been visiting professor to Khoen Kaen University Thailand and Maimonides University Argentina. Dr. Lokesh Kumar is at present 2

National secretary of International Society of Aesthetic Plastic surgery. He is on Editorial board of reputed Aesthetic Surgery Journal of American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) of USA. He is Past President of The Indian Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons and is also past treasurer of Association of Plastic surgeons of India. His hobbies include: Indian Classical Music, Golf and Flying. He holds Private Pilot’s License with 100 Hrs. flying Experience.

Currently Professor of Plastic Surgery and Head of Department of Surgery at Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai, Prof Yadav had done her Microsurgery Fellowship from Brescia, Italy. She is Post Graduate Teacher and Examiner for M.Ch. Plastic Surgery for Bombay University and has been Member of Board of studies Maharashtra University of Health Services, Nasik, Maharashtra, India 2005 onwards. The

APSI accredited Cadaveric Flap Dissection Course at Tata Memorial Hospital under her directorship are very well received among all. The number of Reconstructions done (1842) is highest in the Indian Subcontinent with results matching international standards.

Gen. N. C. Sanyal Visiting Professor in Plastic Surgery – Dr. Anil Behl Dr. Anil Kumar Behl, AVSM obtained M.Ch in Plastic Surgery from Poona in the year 1992. He is currently working as commandant and principal of the Command hospital, Bangalore as well as Head of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Command Hospital (AF), Bangalore. He is also a Senior Advisor in Surgery & Reconstructive Surgery to the Armed Forces and Professor of Surgery at Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore. He obtained additional training of SHO/visiting Registrar Plastic Surgery at Chepstow and Wordsley, UK in 1993-94. He was a Fellow in Cranio-facial Surgery at Southfield, USA in 1994-95 and again in 2000-2001. Dr. Anil Behl was also Executive Member of APSI (2003-2005)

APSICON 2011 Coimbatore Savings The Organizing Chairman of APSICON 2011, Dr. Raja Sabapathy handed over the savings of Coimbatore conference to Executive Trustee Dr. Rajeev Ahuja and President Dr. Arun Kumar Singh. This savings are Rs. 55,61,396. The Organizing committee presented a proposal to form APSI Educational Foundation.

Peet Prize – APSICON 2012 The award is given for presentation of the paper after preliminary selection. Eligibility: All full / life members of APSI Submission of papers: The paper should be of high standard and should have originality. It should be relevant to the Indian context. If experience of a long series of cases is being presented, it is preferable to include a statistical analysis also. New ideas and innovation / new achievements and feats can be presented. Modification of techniques, highlighting cost effectiveness and superiority of results, development of newer instruments, etc. Necessary Application Form should be obtained from Secretary by sending email to [email protected]. Later entry is to be sent as attachment to email along with all photographs as well as illustrations. As alternate send 4 copies of the full text of the paper along with photographs and illustrations etc. as hard copies to Secretary, APSI; so as to reach him before 31st July, 2012. The papers to be presented in “Peet Prize Session” should be marked on the envelope. Author also needs to submit an undertaking that work has not been published. Acceptance: The final acceptance of the paper will be communicated to the participants by the Secretary, APSI. Authors who still wish to present their papers in APSICON for the year if their paper is not accepted for the Peet Prize Session will have to themselves submit the same to the organizing secretary of the conference. Time for Presentation: Ten minutes will be allowed for presentation, to be followed by 3 minutes of discussion. Anybody from the audience is free to ask questions on the presentation. The title slide should NOT indicate the name of the institution.

Kilner Essay Award 1. Essay on any topic has to be submitted by email attachment or in four copies so as to reach the Secretary, APSI by 31st July, 2012. Entry will have to be accompanied by application form available by email from the secretary. 2. Open to all full or associate members of the association of less than 10 years standing after postgraduation. 3. It should not be more than 5000 words, excluding references, charts, tables, photographs, etc. 4. This is an essay. It may also include author's original work in this suggested sequence, introduction, material and methods, review of literature, observations, discussion, summary and conclusions. 5. The winner will be chosen based on the subject matter, content and outline of the essay. Judges may also refuse selection for the award if entries are not up to the mark.

APSI - Dr. J. R. Jaju Junior Best Paper Award Eligibility: Junior Plastic Surgeon undergoing training, or not more than one year after training. The paper should not have any coauthor. Submission: 1. While submitting the abstract of the paper please indicate on top that the paper be considered for this particular session. 2. The abstract should be accompanied either by a certificate from the Head of the department or a photocopy of passing certificate suggesting that the qualification has been obtained in last one year only. 3. The abstract should be submitted to the Organizing Secretary of APSICON 2011 by 30 June 2012 . 4. Specify on the envelop „Junior Best Paper Award Entry‟. Applications in prescribed format along with short CVs as attachment in email should reach the Secretary, APSI by 31st July 2012.The Training fellowships are for a period of 4 weeks. Applicants must be associate or full member of the Association and should submit their applications with the scanned approval of the consultants under whom they wish to train. Applications received after the due date and without accompanying approval letters will not be entertained. Successful applicants are required to maintain a daily diary during the period and obtain a certificate of attendance from the consultant. Application from PG trainees to attend APSICON should include acceptance letter for their presentation, proof of registration, a short CV and a scanned forwarding letter from Head of the department. PGs who are not members of Association can also apply in this category.

One APSICON-2010 International Training Fellowship Made available from the savings of APSICON 2010 held in Goa. The award amount is likely to be around Rs. One Lakh subject to realization of interest on the corpus and subject to TDS. The selection shall be done along with other fellowship applications; as exception members who has already visited any international center in recent time and had not availed of any financial assistance may be considered, however the Executives reserve the right to decide the method of disbursement of available funds in absence of suitable candidate.

One APSICON-2010 Research Award Made available from the savings of APSICON 2010 held in Goa. The award amount is likely to be around Rs. One Lakh subject to realization of interest on the corpus and subject to TDS. Recently concluded prospective and clinical research will get priority. The applicant will have to declare about all financial, departmental and other help received for the research. The application has to be done by the candidate with research results in the pattern of IJPS. The three judges for selection are Dr. Mukund Thatte, Dr. Rajeev Ahuja and Dr. K. Sridhar. IJPS will have first right to publish the research. Winner will be free to submit it elsewhere if IJPS does not communicate within six months of declaration of selection. As exception this time the selection will be done before Lucknow conference, and the winner will be felicitated in conference. For subsequent years the current procedure of announcing winner after consensus of General Body and awarding in subsequent conference will be followed.

Professional Development Courses

APSI – APSICON 2005 – Ethicon Courses in Plastic Surgery These courses are to complement the training of postgraduate students of plastic surgery and qualified plastic surgeons. These courses have been providing holistic approach to the management of problems and time for academic discussion. Applications are invited from Departments and Associations for hosting such courses in 2013. Honorary Co-Coordinator for this scheme is Prof. Rajeev Ahuja. Kindly communicate with him in case you have plans to host such course. Scheme - The course is usually limited to 40 participants and registration is on first come-first served basis. The course fee is restricted to Rs. 2,500 per delegate. This is fully refundable to first 40 students/APSI members who attend the course. Application should include Name, correspondence address, mobile phone number or contact number and email. Application should be accompanied by draft or at par cheque of Rs. 2,500 payable at the relevant city. PG's should include certificate from the head of the department.

APSI Membership Certificates and I Cards Every new member gets Membership Certificates and Member's Identity card and most of the senior members are in possession of both these documents. If any of you wish to obtain any of these documents, please communicate to secretary on email before 30th June, 2012.

15th IPRAS 2009 Humanitarian Activities Fund 1.

The fund will be governed by general rules applicable to all corpuses managed by APSI Trust, i.e. the usual rules of APSl Trust will apply in disbursing the interest and in augmenting the corpus on an annual basis. 2. If there is no proposal in a financial year the entire interest generated will be used to augment the corpus. 3. It will be specifically used for organizing humanitarian activities on behalf of APSI, like organizing ‘Surgical Camps’ at remote places with the help of local charitable groups or medical colleges, where Plastic Surgery facilities don't exist. 4. The first such disbursement will be in the year 2013. 5. The proposals will be submitted to Secretary, APSI at least 8 months before the camp activity. 6. All proposals should include the complete plan, the co-hosts (and their role), financial details, list of surgeons and other staff, food and stay arrangements, venue of surgery etc. Proposals should be comprehensive in all aspects. 7. The Committee to consider such proposals will consist of the President and Secretary of APSI; President, Chairman and Secretary General of IPRAS-2009, and Dr. Chanjiv Singh (Chairman-Humanitarian Committee-IPRAS). This group (Secretary APSI) will present the proposal to the APSl Executive and an electronic approval of the APSl Executive will be taken by him/her to expedite the decision. 8. Surgeons from overseas will need MCI and / or State Medical Council Registration as per rule applicable at the time. This will be ensured by the organizers. 9. A separate bank account will be opened for this purpose by the Chief Organizer and it will have a minimum of two signatories, who will be authorized by APSI Executive.to operate this account jointly, 10. This is a financial support of the nature of one time lump sum grant 11. APSI or IPRAS or IPRAS 2009 Organizing committee will take no responsibility in the conduct of the camp. APSI is only a disbursing agency in this regard. The Chief Organizer will furnish a signed statement absolving the above agencies from all risks and liabilities – clinical social and legal - in the conduct of the camp. 12. APSI or IPRAS or IPRAS 2009 Organizing committee will not accept or entertain any demands if there are shortfalls of any manner in the conduct of the camp. 13. The surgical camp will not be conducted in a personal nursing home of a member of APSI. However, it may be carried out in a nursing home where Plastic Surgery facilities don’t exist in the Region. 14. Chief Organizer of the camp is to furnish a full audited statement of accounts within 2 months of the conclusion of the activity. If there are any savings from the amount disbursed they will be returned along with the audited statement. 15. The Chief Organizer will also be responsible to furnish a report of the camp which includes the proceedings, number of cases operated (their detailed list) and some pictures of activity as well as clinical results. 16. All branding for the Camp will bear IPRAS, IPRAS 2009 and APSI Logo. Branding will also have the words inscribed, ‘Supported by Association of Plastic Surgeons of India’. 17. No personal promotion by way of pictures or names etc will be permissible. 18. Any misconduct during the ‘Camp’ which brought to the notice of APSI Executive will invite disciplinary proceedings according to ‘Rules & Regulations’ governing APSI. 19. The Chief Organizer requesting APSI funds will sign the ‘Rules’ mentioned above from serial 3-18 on a Rs. 100 non judicial stamp paper, as a token of acceptance, and get it notarized.

APSICON 2012 The 47th Annual Conference of The Association of Plastic Surgeons of India is being held in India's most cultural city Lucknow from 6th till 8th November, 2012. On 4th November Prof. CR Sunderrajan Memorial Live Surgery Workshop will be held. APSI Ethicon Accredited Course on Cleft Surgery will precede the workshop on 2nd and 3rd November.
