MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT of the Federation of German Textile Retailers (BTE)

LDT Nagold – Careers in the Fashion Industry Nagold has been the elite in the textile industry for many decades. It connects not only the retail industry with fashion, but also the business of the industry and the service providers for the industry and trade. Industry know-how is concentrated here and can be used to fullfill the most diverse profile requirements. A strong network with industry companies guarantees continuous updates to the curriculum and a close relationship to practical applications. The integration of theory and practice is an essential success component in establishing careers in the fashion industry. Many successful buyers, managing directors, managers and entrepreneurs have their roots in Nagold 4

and still profit from the advantages of its large network. Often is the case that decision makers in the personnel departments have completed their degree at Nagold. They know therefore how valuable and relevant Nagold’s elite status in the industry is. A degree from LDT demonstrates not only proof of acquired skills and knowledge but is also an admission ticket into the industry. In the fashion retail trade, an operating shop is the heart of professional life. An industry that is constantly reinventing itself, that appears ageless, requires high-level skills to identify and implement new trends, adapt models of success and allow for creativity. The knowledge acquired remains therefore an important foundation in making independent thought and action pos-

sible. Discipline, taste, ambition and interpersonal skills are also key ingredients for a career reaching into upper level management in the fashion industry. Welcome to a career in the fashion industry. Welcome to Nagold.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Of the Federation of German Footwear Retailers (BDSE)

For more than 15 years, the LDT Nagold has been training young professionals for the footwear sector through various degree and training programs. The level of education has constantly evolved during this time and become more international. Various degree programs can be completed by students both here and abroad. The close cooperation between LDT and the footwear trade, the footwear industry, the purchasing associations and its practical approach to our entire industry, particularly demonstrates the great advantages that the LDT has in providing qualified and high-level education. It also provides a coexistence of three related industries: Textiles - Footwear

- Sporting Goods provide a comprehensive look at the trading landscape: Outfit. Young people are trained to be capable and ambitious junior professionals for the entire footwear industry, able to prove their talent in middle management positions and also as future entrepreneurs. To all those interested, I would recommend using the Open House Days to have a look around, have discussions with Nagold personnel and to decide for an educational institution with vision and future.

The Chairman’s Committee of the BDSE wishes you a bright future in an exciting industry that deals with the wonderful area of “pretty shoes”.

By dividing themes into blocks, optimal concentration of individual topics in each area can be achieved. Individual themes are considered and analysed from different perspectives - also in workshops. The results are presented either in writing or orally and then graded. These special weeks are led primarily by renowned experts from the industry. The guest lecturers come from Germany as well as from the neighbouring countries of Switzerland and Austria.

The Corporate Model Dual Degree Programme The Dual Degree Programme which alternates between practical phases in a company and theoretical phases at the LDT Nagold, allows immediate entry into professional life after only 30 months of study The programme is tailored to match the situation of most high school students who have little or no prior experience in the fashion industry. ƒƒ 30 Month theoretical/practical degree programme with 5 instruction phases at the LDT (12 months) and 5 practical phases (18 months) in a partner company

List of Partner Companies ƒƒ A current overview of our participating partner companies - approximately 400 companies - can be found at www.ldt.de .

CORPORATE MODEL DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME

Contracts A “Trainee Contract” between the company and the student and, a “Corporate Model / Dual Degree Programme Contract” between the LDT Nagold, the company and the student, govern the programme. Upon request, the administration offices can send a sample contract by mail, fax or email. Contact: [email protected]

Payment and Expenses Fees for the Corporate Model at the LDT Nagold are currently EUR 378 per month, of which the partner company generally pays 50%. phases (12 months) ƒƒ Approximately 2,200 units taught in blocks during the course of the programme Degree structure The corporate model is composed of 5 theoretical phases (12 months) at LDT, during which the curriculum is taught in blocks. In addition, 5 practical phases (18 months) are spent with a partner company. The theoretical and practical phases are alternated. The programme always begins with a 2-3 month practical phase in a company (this time can be contractually agreed upon as “probational period). This practical phase is then followed by the first theoretical phase at the LDT Nagold. This pattern then repeats itself for the remaining 4 theoretical and practi-

cal phases. Examinations are given on a regular basis. Further examinations are given in the 4th and 5th theoretical phases (semester thesis, large case study, IHK examination). The Theoretical Phases The theoretical phases are divided into ƒƒ Basic Level (Phase I and 2) and ƒƒ Specialisation Level (Phases 3 - 5) The subject groups The courses are grouped into 4 subject groups 1st Management and Organisation 2nd Sales and Procurement 3rd Personnel / Human Resources

The subject groups 1 – 3 handle the economic themes, the fourth subject group handles merchandising themes. To ensure professionalism in later working life, business administration and merchandising are logically interlinked. In this way, the relationship between commercial responsibilities and product-related responsibilities can be professionally taught. After learning the basic knowledge focusing on industry related themes, instruction strategically shifts to teamwork, role play and case studies. Generally, basic subjects and specialised subjects are differentiated.

ELECTIVES IN MERCHANDISING Choice between the areas of merchandising and business at the beginning of the programme Choosing your merchandising focus (textiles or footwear). At the beginning of the specialisation level (as of theoretical phase 3) In theoretical phase 3, a choice must be made in the business administration area between retail or wholesale. The different requirement profiles of the companies are taken into account at this point. This specialisation will be noted on the degree certificate (for example: Business Manager Textiles, Specialisation in Retail).

38

The Basic Level 1st and 2nd Theoretical Phase Instruction in the basic subjects of the four subjects (core classes). Teaching basic skills is the focus in this level. Special Events: Corporate presentations Beginning in the first phase, renowned partner companies from retail and wholesale give presentations at the LDT Nagold on the subject of their business philosophy. Questions about personnel policies and career opportunities for Nagold graduates are answered authoritatively, open discussions are held.

Transition into the 3rd Phase In order to be advanced to the specialisation level, examination results must match the examination requirements.

The Specialisation Level 3rd, 4th and 5th Theoretical Phase Instruction in the specialisation subjects of the 4 subject groups. Specialisation Subjects All 60 special subjects are available to choose from. These are chosen according to the professional objectives and also depend on the respective area of specialisation. The specialisation level is very practically oriented – instead of lectures, students work increasingly with case studies.

ELECTIVES IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION Merchandising Special Weeks The merchandising special weeks in the specialisation level are based on the respective merchandising focus. By dividing instruction into blocks, an ideal focus on the individual themes of this subject group can be achieved. Individual themes are considered and analysed - also in workshops - from different perspectives. The results are presented either in writing or orally and then graded. These special weeks are led primarily by renowned experts from the industry. The guest lecturers come from Germany as well as from the neighbouring countries of Switzerland and Austria.

Order training As of the 3rd phase, special training in Buying is given by employees from the production or sales management divisions of well known manufacturers. Following the division into working groups and a briefing by the lecturers, realistic practice in ordering and allocation of limits is carried out with the newest collections. The decisions of the students are analysed and evaluated together.

Excursions The LDT Nagold offers regular excursions as of the third semester. These include, among others, a sporting excursion and training trips to manufacturers throughout Germany. Study groups also make regular visits to partner companies and purchasing associations in the fashion industry. Here the participants can learn product and brand characteristics and gain insight into key positions in the industry. The excursions are summarised in reports.

39

CORPORATE MODEL DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME

Exams Examinations A sliding examination procedure applies for the corporate model: Relevant exams are taken at the end of each instruction block.

Semester Thesis The semester thesis during the specialisation phase serves as verification of technical and methodological skills. Complex issues related to the partner company are analysed and appropriate solutions identified.

40

Large Case Study The large case study is completed during the course of the specialisation level. The participants in a team of four students, design a company with all planning stages. Through this practical project, each student is able to contribute their individual strengths to achieve an optimal written project and be able to present the large case study to the examination board of the LDT Nagold. As with the semester thesis, the large case study counts as part of the fifth subject group at the LDT. Both grades are counted together towards the degree certificate.

Final Exams The grade for the semester thesis is given in the 5th theoretical phase. Those who pass are admitted to the oral examination (presentation of a large case study) which is presented as a group project (groups of 4 students each). Graduation certificates are awarded as part of a festive graduation ceremony shortly following the examinations.

CORPORATE MODEL DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME INTEGRATED ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS Merchant Examination (IHK) Instructor Qualifying Examination IHK Foreign Languages at the LDT Nagold / Speciality Degree Business English IHK

Merchant Examination (IHK) During the corporate model programme, students acquire knowledge that meets the training regulations for Retail Merchant, Wholesale Merchant and Industrial Merchant. They can therefore be admitted for the examination for the merchant profession at the IHK Northern Black Forest (in the 4th theoretical phase).

The instructor qualifying examination AEVO (IHK) During the theoretical phases, LDT students learn the academic content of the instructor qualifying examination (subjects such as: Labour Law, Methodology, Didactics, Education Law, Basics of Self Management). This is followed by corresponding performance

assessments (exams; practical specialist training), resulting in the Instructor’s License AEVO when successfully completed.

Foreign Languages at LDT Nagold Language skills in English and Italian are offered as a part of the study programme at the LDT Nagold. Lessons are taught in additional courses. Speciality Degree Business English IHK Following the completion of approximately 100 instruction hours, one can receive the specialty degree Business English IHK. This degree is required for students who have chosen wholesale for their business focus. Participation

is voluntary for students who have chosen retail as their focus, however, it is still recommended based on later professional need. Prerequisite for the course is an LDT language level examination given at the beginning of the study period. Italian Course Italian courses at various levels are offered as electives. The courses are offered based on demand. Both Basic Italian and Business Italian are offered. The courses are generally offered in the afternoon.

EXCHANGE PROGRAMME / POST GRADUATE DEGREES

The degrees from LDT Nagold qualify for senior positions in the fashion industry (retail and wholesale). These include in particular the management, overtaking or start-up of a company. The degrees conclude with the industry-wide recognised title Business Administration Textiles BTE and are generally required for post graduate studies for an academic degree from a university partner here or abroad. These include the academic degrees BA / BBA / MA / MBA.

Exchange with India Through a special exchange programme with renowned Indian academies, inter-cultural and foreign language skills can be acquired in a practical setting.

57

THE EXCHANGE PROGRAMME With the Pearl Academy in New Delhi (India)

The LDT Nagold has cultivated international level partnerships with various academies and universities. During the degree programme for Business Administration Textiles BTE, a 5-week stay at the Pearl Academy in New Delhi is possible during the semester break. The Pearl Academy is one of many Indian partner academies of the LDT Nagold. Good English language skills are a prerequisite in order to be able to follow the classes. We recommend at least the Upper Intermediate Level of the LDT Nagold language test.

58

5 Weeks at the Pearl Academy In emerging India, The Pearl Academy, founded in 1993, occupies a first place ranking in fashion academies with its approximately 3,000 students. Their educational spectrum includes not only a design degree, but a degree in Fashion Photography and the study of related areas such as Fashion Styling. The partnership with The Pearl Academy was established in 2000 in cooperation with the Association for Technical Cooperation (GTZ), a subsidiary of the German Development Ministry. Since then, an increasingly popular Retail Management course has been established in New Delhi. During the 5-week stay at the Pearl Academy (www.pearlacademy.com) LDT students attend classes and visit production sites and purchasing offices

throughout India. One week is left free to gain personal insight into the procurement process and culture of the country. The students of the Indian Academy complete a similarly structured programme during their visit to the LDT Nagold. An exchange programme with further Indian partner academies is also possible. Further information available at: www.pearlacademy.com

POSTGRADUATE DEGREE With international orientation in India

Hard skills are the first requirement for the fashion business. But the global market expects even more: Important success factors include good foreign language skills, cross-culture and media competence. With the 2-semester postgraduate degree at the LDT Nagold, students meet the international qualifications. The degree is divided into one semester at an Indian academy (for example The Pearl Academy) and a further semester at the LDT Nagold. This offer is focused on the Business Administration in Textiles BTE. With an additional 2 semesters, you can complete the degree Business Administration in Textiles BTE International Business Standard. Courses are conducted in English.

The 5th Semester At the centre of the 5th semester in India is the area of Cross-Culture Training. This individual semester programme was jointly developed by the LDT Nagold and its Indian partners. In additional to the technical content, Indian (business) culture is confronted and explored. The semester generally lasts from February to July. Following 8 weeks of instruction, for example at the Pearl Academy, new skills and knowledge can be put to use in an internship with a selected company. At the conclusion, a project thesis will be created. At the end of the semester, examinations will be given by the LDT.

The 6th Semester The 6th semester explores topics such as personal development, communication skills and media competence. As part of the international semester (generally September - late January) students from LDT and students from partner universities are taught by experts from wholesale, retail and corporate consultants, in addition to the LDT faculty. The 6th semester also ends with examinations given by the LDT. PHOTO(S) Pearl Academy

CAREER PROSPECTS OF LDT NAGOLD GRADUATES

LDT Degree – a Job Guarantee In industry jargon, LDT students are referred to as “Texer”. This term stands for comprehensive qualifications and a practice-based programme of study. LDT graduates are in demand. Retail and wholesale companies such as Brax, the Holy Fashion Group in Kreuzlingen, Tommy Hilfiger Germany, L+T in Osnabrück, H&M, Engelhorn in Mannheim, Breuninger in Stuttgart, Rabe in Hilter, Zinser in Tübingen, Hugo Boss in Metzingen, Olymp in Bietigheim, Lloyd in Sulingen, Ricosta in Donaueschingen, Gant in Holzwickede, Escada in Munich, Marc O´Polo in Stephanskirchen, the catalog company Klingel in Pforzheim and many others, list their job openings on the Career Boards at LDT or contact the LDT instructors directly to offer interesting 72

positions - often exclusively to LDT graduates. In regular presentations at the LDT campus, renowned companies can make contact with future employees. Additionally, an overview of open positions can be found in the administration offices or on the internet (www.ldt.de). In addition to careers in retail and wholesale, positions are offered in purchasing associations, consulting agencies and advertising agencies. A further possibility is to start ones own business – whether it be as a retailer, sales representative or management consultant.

Opinions from graduates of the LDT Nagold from retail and wholesale on the quality of the LDT Nagold:

CAREER PROSPECTS OF LDT NAGOLD GRADUATES

The LDT Nagold prepares its graduates for a career in the textile industry with a practical and comprehensive programme. The extensive merchandising knowledge and tools of the trade as well as the business management fundamentals form a very good basis for a successful entry into industry and trade. In addition to great expertise, the LDT offers the students, even beyond graduation, an important industryspecific network.

Sabine Märtens-Rodluff HUGO BOSS Head of Sales Germany Woman Business Manager Textiles BTE

LDT offers the possibility to learn practical knowledge from its wide range of educational programs. The combination of business management and current merchandising information creates an excellent basis for young professionals. For me, the LDT was the first important step in a successful career path. I recommend the LDT, because we here at s.Oliver offer the successful graduates of the academy the opportunity to begin their career with us!

I would recommend the LDT Nagold because they teach technical and methodical know-how relevant to the practice. The students receive good insight into the textile and footwear industry during their studies and simultaneously, have the opportunity to establish their first important contacts. In addition to professional development, emphasis is also placed on the personal development of the students. Overall, LDT Nagold offers an ideal foundation for junior management and sets them on the right path for market entry.

73

CAREER PROSPECTS OF LDT NAGOLD GRADUATES

The LDT is the basis for making a comprehensive network possible. We gladly recruit young talent from LDT for positions from product management and vertical integration to trade marketing.

Michael Alten VERA MONT Division Head Business Manager Textiles BTE

At the LDT Nagold, I was able to join theory and practice together perfectly. Though my time as a student, I was able to acquire specialist skills and collect interesting contacts. My degree provided me with promising opportunities to start my career in different areas of the footwear and fashion industry.

Jana Ansorg Kienast Footwear Product Manager Women’s Footwear Business Manager Textiles BTE

I recommend LDT Nagold, as there is no other comparable educational opportunity in Germany that qualifies junior management for a successful career start in such a practically oriented manner. In Nagold, the necessary merchandising information is logically combined with business management and taught by a faculty that has the required connection to workplace practices. The students thereby obtain an overall knowledge of the industry that fully meets the requirements that we look for in junior management. Because of this we gladly hire graduates of Nagold’s speciality academy.

Joachim Beer BRAX Managing Director Business Manager Textiles BTE

74

CAREER PROSPECTS OF LDT NAGOLD GRADUATES

The LDT Nagold was and is for me the logical solution in effectively bringing the two axes of business and fashion design together in harmony. Those looking to find entry into the textile industry need, in my opinion, know-how from both areas and must not treat them as opposites, rather, as something to be combined. Nagold can offer a very good basis for this.

ALEX Vogt Freelance Communications Consultant Business Manager Textiles BTE

The LDT Nagold offers the perfect foundation for promising start in the textile industry. Why? Simple: Cooperation with brand leaders from the fashion world make the theory more understandable for the students. Highly qualified teachers support the students in word and deed while the various training possibilities (Bachelor/ Master) allow the students to individualise their education.

LDT graduates are always welcome at Marc O’Polo!

Und was genau?

stellen. New Balance hat hier gefühlt immer die Nase vorn. Was passiert an der Farbfront? Derzeit dominieren klar monochrome Farbstellungen.

Time is running … dann kommt gaaanz lange nichts. Was tut sich in Sachen Upper?

Vielleicht New Balance und Hummel. New Balance steht für Wertiges in Leder

Sehr gut. Was passiert gerade an der Farbfront? Was erwarten Sie zu Sommer 2016?
