In1999, the Municipality of Almada created the Local Energy Management Agency of Almada, AGENEAL
30 March 1999 Almada City Council and a set of companies and organisations sharing a common for the sustainable future of Almada vision legally establish AGENEAL
AGENEAL’s motto – Ideas with Energy– has since then been present in a number of projects and partnerships…
…which were part of the agency’s work in achieving it’s mission during the last 10 years: to be a local forum for information, debate and action on energy and climate change issues

We installed the 1st LED traffic light in Almada
We presented the South Tagus Light Rail project in Brussels
We published our the first article in Almada’s Municipal Magazine

We made the 1st Energy Matrix of Almada

We contributed towards an energy efficient Environmental House, accompanied the refurbishement works and chose some of the building’s energy systems

Organisation and promotion of the 1st European Car Free Day in Almada

We started to verify the compliance of Almada’s new licensed buildings with the Thermal Regulations
We developed aTravel Plan for our stakehoder, the national electricity company, covering the geographical area of Almada
We proposed measures to optimise the energy use in the buidings and facilities of Almada’s new Wastewater Treatment Plants (Mutela and Portinho da Costa)
Organization of the 1st International Seminar to be held in Portugal about “Energy and Climate Change: Local Policies and Strategies”

Daily, over the last 10 years, we provided a free info-energy service to the inhabitants of Almada and did educational and awareness raising actions in schools
We gave our contribution to increase the added value of applications to national funding programs to make new cycling paths, improve the seashore and new school buildings, bringing in the energy efficiency issues
Urban maintenance brigades in electric vans and the new tourism buses of the municipal fleet complying with EURO V emission standards

We continued the development and permanent updating of the Observatory for GHG Emissions of Almada. We updated the Action Plan and proposed new measures for the mitigation and adaptation parts.

We co-organized the 8th Car Free Day in Almada and were awarded the 2nd place in the European Mobility Week Award, among mores than 2100 European cities.
We celebrated our 10th anniversary together with all our stakeholders and friends in a Gala Dinner on the 30th March 2009
We organized the international conference “Local Government Climate Roadmap: a Time for Mobilisation, Planning and Action” Almada, 28th and 29th May 2009
We put together the “Planetasium: the climate gymn” – an educational equipment to help understanding the consequences of CO2 emissions
We participated in the creation of the climate fund of Almada – Almada less Carbon, the first local carbon fund to be created in Portugal, to finance energy efficiency projects in Almada Ano N - 1

We supported the children of a primary school of Almada and produced a film about urban sustainable mobility, in the framework of the Children’s Local Agenda 21 of Almada
In 10 years of activity we developed countless projects and partnerships, strengthening and broadening the scope of our intervention.
But much still remains to be done and news challenges appear everyday.
And in the future…
We will continue to build new partnerships, to get closer to the local community and always fostering Ideas with Energy.
To fulfill our mission and give our inputs to the make Almada a better place to live, work and visit.
Only this way will Almada be able to give its contribution to takle the global problem of climate change
