Integrating the World of Work and the World of Learning OECD’s Skills Strategy has shown that success requires putting a premium on skills-oriented learning throughout life instead of on qualifications-focused education that ends when working life begins. Skills development is also far more effective if the world of learning and the world of work are integrated. Compared to the curriculum taught in schools, learning in the workplace allows young people to develop ‘hard’ skills on modern equipment and ‘soft’ skills such as teamwork, communication and negotiation, through real-world experience. The Sum of Success: Skills, Understandings and Mindsets for Life in Our Times A lively and interactive presentation on what all students need to know to attain success in learning, work, well-being, family, social and civic life. Besides a progress report on the challenges and successes in transforming education for our times, promising practices from ten networks of Deeper Learning schools in the US and latest international work on 21st Century global education standards will also be presented during the talk. Last but not least, the importance of character qualities, leadership and a culture of joy in learning for everyone in the education sector will also be highlighted in the presentation.

SkillsFuture is a national movement to provide individuals with the opportunities to develop their fullest potential, regardless of their starting points, through continuous skills deepening. It involves multiple stakeholders – individuals, employers, industry and trade associations, unions, training providers, etc. – all of whom need to come together for the movement to succeed. Through this movement, the skills, passion and contributions of every individual will drive Singapore’s next phase of development towards an advanced economy and inclusive society. This session will address the impetus for and key thrusts under SkillsFuture, and draw its relevance to manpower planning and training delivery.

EXECUTIVE IMMERSION PROGRAMME (EIP) The EIP seeks to provide participants with experiential hands-on learning through visits to local TVET institutions.
OV The Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) is an eight-storey, 30,000 sqm Continuing Education and Training (CET) Campus which houses anchor CET providers that collectively offer a variety of generic and industry-specific skills upgrading programmes including Workforce Development Agency (WDA) one stop services which offer training, career advisory and other forms of assistance for all segments of the local workforce. LLI was designed and built with the adult learner in mind, equipped with modern and state-of-the-art training facilities.
Established in 1992, Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) today offers 50 full-time, three-year diploma courses and a suite of post-diploma and customised courses for continuing education. NYP’s mission is to provide quality education and training to prepare students and adult learners for work and life, equipping them to be lifelong learners and to contribute to the technological, economic and social development of Singapore. NYP’s industry-relevant and real world-based training equips its 16,000 full-time students to become Employment-ready upon graduation. It aims to nurture students into innovative and enterprising individuals, capable of succeeding in any path they choose to take, be it a career or in further studies.
Inaugurated in 1963 as Ngee Ann College with only 116 students, Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) is today one of Singapore’s leading institutions of higher learning with more than 16,000 full-time students, 2,000 part-time students and an alumni community of over 130,000. The polytechnic offers 49 full-time courses through its nine academic schools. NP also supports Continuing Education and Training (CET) through its CET Academy which offers a wide range of part-time programmes. With its emphasis on broad-based learning, global exposure and character development, NP’s vision is to prepare graduates with a passion for learning, values for life and competencies to thrive in a global workplace.
The first educational institution in Singapore to leverage the Problembased Learning approach for all its diploma programmes, Republic Polytechnic (RP) has six schools and two academic centres offering 41 diplomas courses. RP is committed to nurturing innovation and entrepreneurial learning in an environment that develops problem-solving skills and lifelong learning opportunities. Its holistic and broad-based curriculum prepares students for an active and meaningful role in society as problem solvers, respected professionals and passionate citizens.
Established in 1954, Singapore Polytechnic (SP) is Singapore’s first polytechnic, with 10 academic schools that offer 49 full-time diploma courses across nine disciplines. SP operates out of its current lush and green campus in Dover Road, with a student population of 16,000 and staff strength of 1,600. SP adopts a proven creative teaching and learning framework, offering students a holistic, authentic and industry-relevant curriculum, innovative and vibrant learning spaces, and enriching overseas programmes. It is the first institution of higher learning to adopt Design Thinking into its curriculum. SP is also committed to producing competent and versatile graduates who are also imbued with sound values, so that they can be work ready, life ready and world-ready.
Established in April 1990, Temasek Polytechnic (TP) operates from a 30-hectare campus fronting the scenic Bedok Reservoir. It currently has a student population of about 16,000. There are six academic schools at TP, offering 51 market-driven full-time diploma courses that prepare students to be ready for further studies, future careers and life. With its dedication to ensure a high standard in the design and provision of its courses, as well as commitment to providing a holistic education that is industry-relevant, TP brings education to life and life to education. TP students are also well-prepared to face the challenges of the future.
Day 4 (Fri, 6 Nov 2015)
EXECUTIVE IMMERSION PROGRAMME (EIP) The EIP seeks to provide participants with experiential hands-on learning through visits to local TVET institutions.
The Institute of Technical Education (ITE) was established as a post-secondary institution in April 1992. ITE is Singapore’s principal provider of career and technical education and to date, offers 101 certificate, higher certificate and diploma courses across 11 sectors of industry. ITE takes in 25% of the annual secondary school cohort, with an annual enrolment of about 30,000 students under the Pre-Employment Training (PET) programmes. Students are exposed to the unique Hands-On, Minds-On, Hands-On, Hearts-On Minds-On,TMHeducation philosophy, in a facility-rich authentic learning environment. ITE also provides part-time Continuing Education and Training (CET)
programmes for about 20,000 adult learners annually. The TVET 2015 Conference will end with a half-day EIP to ITE College Central, the third and final comprehensive College. ITE College Central started operations in January 2013 and caters to more than 10,000 students. It houses state-of-the-art facilities, such as a dedicated aircraft hangar housing real aircraft, an Early Childhood Education Training Centre, and a Sound Stage for the Performing Arts. This ensures that students are immersed in a stimulating environment that helps to maximise their potential and develop their talents.
