ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES) is the first energy and allied sector University in the Pan Asian region offering career opportunities in the fast growing sectors of Oil & Gas, Power, Aviation, Port & Shipping, Automotive & Infrastructure, Supply Chain Management and other allied areas. UPES was created in 2003 under an act of the State Government of Uttarakhand and is recognized by University Grant Commission (UGC), accredited by National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bar Council of India and Energy Institute (U.K.). UPES has three constituent colleges - College of Engineering, College of Management and College of Legal Studies. UPES, as a premier petroleum sector and energy domain specific academic institution wishes to be one of the credible partners of the Indian Energy Sector to help provide innovative solutions to current problems and help generate the needed knowledge to catalyse the development of refined and new generation technologies with a view to support Indian Energy industry strengthen its technological leadership and global presence. Apart from the academic domain, UPES is pro-actively involved in research and development activities. UPES has 11 centers engaged exclusively in exploring, discovering and understanding various aspects of core sectors of chosen domain. Institute of Nano-science and Nanotechnology (NSNT), at UPES, intends to carry out research towards leveraging the potential of nano-scale phenomenon for petroleum and energy. Recently UPES has started MTech program in Nuclear Science and Technology, which is specifically designed for the study of all aspects of nuclear power such as nuclear engineering, nuclear plant design, reactor operations, nuclear waste management and the radiological applications of nuclear science. The curriculum is sufficiently focused on the development of practical knowledge to make the students immediately productive in several laboratories under the Department of Atomic Energy. It also provides the theoretical fundamentals to prepare the students to undertake research programs. ABOUT KOHA Koha is a full-featured Open Source Library Management System first deployed in January 2000 at Horowhenua Library Trust in New Zealand and is now used by more than 500 libraries worldwide. KOHA's features and capability continues to evolve and expand to meet the needs of its user base. The collaborative efforts of the growing community of libraries provide the continuous development of the system. Koha has most of the features that would be expected in an ILS, including:    

Web 2.0 facilities like tagging, comment, Social sharing and RSS feeds UNICODE and library standards compliant such as MARC21, UNIMARC, Z39.50, SRU/SW, SIP2 and many more Runs on Linux, Unix, Windows and MacOS. MySQL as backend RDBMS and Apache Server 2

Export/import and backup/restoration facilities Full acquisitions system including budgets and pricing information Ability to cope with any number of branches, patrons, patron categories, item categories, items, currencies and other data Union catalogue facility Customizable & Faceted search facility. Circulation and borrower management User management: Koha manages your users, including integration with systems like LDAP, Radius, Active Directory and SAML, to allow single sign-on. Self-Check: Koha can be used with any SIP2 compliant self-check machines. Web based OPAC enhanced content from sources like Amazon, Google Books, etc. Koha has an offline circulation module.

OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP       

To create an awareness on the benefits of using Open Source Software, To introduce the Ubuntu operating system to the participants. To introduce KOHA as an Integrated Library management System To develop skills in installation of Koha on Ubuntu platform, customization, Data Migration and implementation. To develop an expertise by providing a thorough training, tutorial, demonstration and hands-on practice To equip the participants for managing Koha at institutions with large collections To exchange information, knowledge and experience in using KOHA for Library management.

TARGET PARTICIPANTS The Workshop will be of immense benefit to Library and Information Science Professionals working in different types of libraries and information centres and knowledge centres, LIS faculty, Research scholars, students, all stakeholders interested in LIS activities and IT professionals. ACCOMMODATION Dehradun has a number of hotels and guest houses catering to various types of tourists. Delegates may kindly write to the organizing secretary if they have any query regarding accommodation. The organizing committee of the workshop will also make necessary arrangements to pick up delegates from their hotels or guest houses. The details of the hotels and pick up points will be advertised on the website soon VENUE OF THE WORKSHOP The Workshop will be held at the Central Library situated on the main campus of the University of Petroleum & Energy Studies. The campus is at Bidholi, a hilly village surrounded by green valleys. It is 16 kilometers from the Dehradun city, 40 kilometers from Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun and 20 kilometers from Dehradun Railway Station WEATHER During First Week of November, generally temperature varies between 12 to15oC. Participants are requested to get woolens with them to feel comfortable.

HOW TO REACH DEHRADUN By Rail: Dehradun can be reached by rail, which is well connected directly with New Delhi. By Air: The nearest domestic airport is Jolly Grant Airport, about 20 Km from the City and 40 KM from University Campus. By Road: Dehradun is well-connected by road with all major cities in North India, online ticket booking and other information may be obtained from http://utc.uk.gov.in/ One can reach the Bidholi village Campus of UPES by taxies. It is around 25km from the city centre (Ghanta-ghar) and 9 km from Nanda-Ki-Chowki on Chakrata Road.
