About the daycare system Welcome to the daycare system in the Ikast-Brande Council area. We are very pleased to be working with you regarding the care and development of your child. We see parents that trust us to look after their children everyday, as expressing a great confidence in our abilities. We do our utmost to live up to this confidence. Daycare is: Close emotional contact with one adult. Care. A little environment in somebody's own home. Stimulation and the company of other children. Play and learning. Common aims for parents and daycarers regarding their child's growth. In the council daycare in Ikast-Brande Kommune we look after approximately 750 children every day. There are approximately employed 190 daycarers, 9 daycare supervisors, 1 daycare manager, 1 deputy and 1 secretary. The council daycare system has it's base in the administrative building in Nørre-Snede. We have eleven reserve-daycarers, who haven't permanent children. Instead they look after other daycarers children whilst these are absent because of vacation etc.

Side 3

Each daycarer looks after four children in their own home, with the possibility of a fifth child at times. Each supervisor has about 22 daycarers to supervise. They visit the daycarers' homes, where they advise and help them in their work and they carry out administrative tasks. Each daycarer and playgroup has their own supervisor. The daycare system works in accordance with the juvenile policy in Ikast-Brande, which demands continuity between each of the provisions available for children's care. The aims for children between the ages of 0 and 2.9 years are: The daycare facilities give children the opportunity to develop their language, creativity, physical abilities, sense of participation and responsibility, which should contribute to their independence and ability to show solidarity to others. The daycare facilities must also support the development of the child's understanding of democracy, cultural values and their interaction with nature. We are obligated to create an educational plan and an assessment for the child's environment. Both can be downloaded from our website: http://dagpleje.ikast-brande.dk

It's only where children feel safe, that the feeling of happiness can grow.

Our objectives It is our objective to give each child, in collaboration with his or her parents, a safe and harmonious up-bringing, in accordance with each child's specific needs. Each day is organized after the council's juvenile policy and the law regarding educational plans.

Side 7

The initial visit Before accepting a daycare offer, parents have the possibility of visiting the daycarer in order to establish a satisfactory start to the co-operation between daycarer and parents. This visit may only take half an hour. After the initial visit, parents contact the daycare office within the time limit given in the letter. If the offer is accepted, then a contact meeting is arranged. This meeting takes place in the home of the daycarer, where the supervisor also participates. Together they inform parents of all aspects of daycare. If you have any questions regarding this folder or about daycare facilities in general, you can ask them there. Try to establish a good relationship to your child's daycarer already at this meeting. Tell everything you can about your child's eating habits, ways of playing and illnesses etc, so that the transition to a day in daycare is as easy on the child as possible.

Side 8

Permits When children start in daycare, you will be asked to fill in a form regarding different permits. The form is kept by your daycarer, but takes note of which permits you agree to.

Daycarer's obligations Daycarers have responsibility for children, whilst they are in their care. Their homes must be arranged and organized with these children in mind. Daycarers must activate and stimulate their children, so that they thrive and develop, whilst they are in daycare. Daycarers are obliged to work in accordance with our educational plan and substantiate that work. Documentation of this work does not refer to individual children, but to the group as a whole and in compliance with the six themes in the educational plan. Children may not be looked after by others without the permission of parents and the daycare office; unless it is in connection with the playgroup, where responsibility for children can be given to a colleague. Daycarers may not let others collect children from daycare, unless parents have explicitly informed them of it.

Side 9

Arrival and departure of children Each daycarer works 48 hours each week, between the hours of 6.15am and 5pm Although on Friday only until 3.45pm. Each daycarer's opening times are decided by the daycare administration. Children may only be in daycare between these times. This means that children must arrive and depart during opening times and telephone calls may only be made within these opening times. In order to show consideration for children and the planning of each day, it is important that each daycarer knows when each child comes and goes. If a child doesn’t show up an hour after expected, and in any case after 9am, a daycarer is not expected to stay at home and wait. A daycarer must always be told if another person collects a child, and this person must have been presented to the daycarer, before the child may be released to them.

Side 10

Playgroup and physical activities In order to enhance social and physical skills, there are playgroups each week or every other week for all daycarers and their children. Daycarers are divided up in smaller groups consisting of between five and eight, who meet in borrowed or rented premises nearby. In playgroups children have the possibility of being part of and develop in larger groups of children of the same age. Daycarers have the opportunity to help each other with activities that require more space, than they have at home. Activities are normally singing, music and movement, but can also include celebration of something special or the planning of a future event. During playgroup, children have the opportunity to meet other daycarers, whom they also could be looked after by, if their own daycarer is absent. We encourage all playgroups to meet three or four times a year in a playgroup that lasts all day. This gives a variation for both children and daycarers and is also less stressing for them. Daycarers have better possibilities for discussing their work, when they do not have to hurry home again. All-day playgroups do give parents a little extra work, as prams etc. have to be transported back and forth. But we hope we meet your understanding, regarding this.

Side 11

Pets If there are pets in a daycarers home, then this must be treated responsibly by making sure that they are never with the children, unless under supervision. Food and water bowls must also be out of reach.

Smoking Children in daycare are never subjected to cigarettes. Smoking around children is not allowed. If there is smoking in the evenings or at the weekends, then rooms must be thoroughly aired before any children arrive.

We lend out certain items Toys High chairs Creative materials Collapsible cots Parents must provide a pram with an approved DVN harness.

Side 12

Nutritional policies for daycarers Daycarers are obligated to give children a variety of healthy products, taking into consideration the specific needs and eating habits of children under the age of three years. It is the responsibility of daycarers to be aware of health aspects, when they choose and buy food. They follow the seasons and buy either fresh or frozen products of good quality, avoiding artificial additives. Daycarers take into consideration any nutritional health risks covered by the media. Special diets and allergies Parent wishes regarding avoidance of certain products is respected. However avoidance of all products within whole food groups can only be accommodated if recommended by a doctor. Cultural or religious customs regarding food will also be respected. Meals In daycare children are offered: Mid-morning snack Lunch One or two afternoon snacks

Side 13

Breakfast is not provided for, but children, who arrive before 7.30am, may eat the breakfast they have with them, when they arrive. If your child needs special foods, then these must be provided for by parents. Babies that need bottles or baby food, must also have these with them.

Side 14

Use of harnesses All children regardless of age must wear an approved harness, whilst asleep in a pram. All harnesses must be DVN approved.

The child's clothing It is very important that children wear sensible clothes that take into consideration the time of year. Make sure that there is enough extra clothing. Due to safety, daycare children must not have cords attached to their clothes or scarves. When buying clothes, make sure that cords in hats and hoods are removed before they are used in daycare.

Sun lotion In seasons where this is necessary, children must have their own sun lotion with them. Give your child some in the morning and decide with your daycarer, when another layer is necessary. We try to keep children out of direct sunlight, by making sure they have a shady area to play in. As daycare children often sleep in the middle of the day, they avoid being in the sun when it is worst. Make sure your child has a sun hat. Side 15

The child's bag should contain: Nappies Underwear Towel and cloths for washing Bibs Extra jumper/T-shirt Extra trousers/shorts Extra socks Rainwear/coat Footwear (indoor and outdoor) Hat and gloves/mittens Plastic bags for dirty clothes Cream/baby powder Sun lotion Always talk to your daycarer about the things in the child's bag, so that there isn’t anything missing.

Side 16

Daycarers' absence There are two types of absence for daycarers: planned leave (vacation or time-off due to overtime) and sudden absence due to illness. If your daycarer has planned leave, then you will, within a reasonable time limit, be informed of this. You will also be asked whether or not you need a placement. If you need a daycarer, then your child will be placed if possible with the reserve-daycarer, otherwise with one of the daycarers from the same playgroup as yours. You are informed of where your child shall be a few days before your daycarer's absence starts. There are many children on holiday in weeks 7 and 42, plus the days up to Easter. During these periods, children in daycare are looked after by a daycarer from their own playgroup. We have eleven reserve-daycarers that look after a whole group of children from a colleague on leave. Each reserve-daycarer covers between 15 and 18 regular daycarers. Daycarers leave is planned every six months and we try to cover all leave due to courses, holiday and time-off due to overtime through our reserve-daycarers. If your daycarer is suddenly ill, then you will most probably be offered a place with one of her colleagues from her playgroup.

Side 17

If a daycarer is so ill, that she can't look after her children, then she phones the daycare office, who finds another placement for them. It is important that parents are aware that they can be contacted as early as 6 am if necessary. Make sure that you can hear your telephone and that answering machines are turned off, so that our office can get through to you. When a daycarer is well enough to resume work, you will be informed by your reserve daycarer. If your child is at home, whilst your daycarer is ill, we will contact you between 1 and 2 pm. the day before she again resumes work. If we cannot reach you or leave you a message, then we will call you again the next day at 6 am. As we are dependent on telephones in order to reach you, it is very important that new numbers are registered at our office.

Side 18

When a child is looked after by a reserve daycarer, it is important that the following things are remembered: Yellow form with all your information. Pram Quilt and pillow Extra clothing Nappies and baby wipes Special diet if necessary Talk to your daycarer regarding sudden illness. Find out if it is necessary to have an extra bag or whether the usual bag can be collected and used.

Side 19

The child's illness Daycarers may only look after healthy children due to the following: If a child is ill, it needs to be at home Daycarers must not have the responsibility of sick children There is a risk of infection for the other children. There is extra work with sick children, which can mean that the other children lose their share of attention and cannot come outside. If a child becomes ill, whilst he or she is in daycare, then parents will be contacted by their daycarer. The child must be collected straight away. Parents must inform their daycarer in the event of a child's illness and upon their return to daycare, once they are well again. A child is considered well, when he or she can be a part of a normal day in daycare. In case of uncertainty, a guide to children's illnesses is given to all new parents.

Side 20

Medicine Only prescribed medicine can be administered in daycare. The child's name must be on the label together with the dosage. In cases of doubt regarding medicine, it is the decision of daycare-management that is followed.

Confidentiality As a council employee, your daycarer must treat all information attained during her work with confidentiality.

The passing on of information Information attained by Ikast-Brande Council Area, can be used within other departments if such a transfer of information is legally allowed.

Side 21

Vacation Daycarers have the same amount of vacation as any other in Denmark. On top of this, they have seven extra days a year plus two more as compensation for the four evening meetings they must attend each year. The daycare system, like all other council day-institutions is closed in weeks 28, 29 and 30. We are also closed between Christmas and New Year, the day after Ascension Day (Kristi Himmelfartsdag) and Constitution Day (5th June). We try to use the same reserve daycarer, when the usual daycarer is absent. During these closed periods, it is still possible to have your child looked after, if both parents have to work. Here it will often be necessary, because of our resources, to offer you another place than usual. We expect that all children have three weeks vacation from 1st May to 30th September. In consideration for children in daycare, parents and daycarers should plan and co-ordinate vacation in good time, so that unnecessary placements with unknown daycarers can be avoided. We encourage parents to have their children at home if their daycarer is ill or otherwise absent, if parents have the opportunity to do this.

Side 22

There is no possibility of a refund, when daycarers are ill or on vacation.

Insurance Ikast-Brande has an insurance, which daycarer is responsible for an injury.

covers

if

the

Injuries caused by other daycare children are not covered by this insurance. We recommend that parents have their own insurance policies in which their children are covered.

Side 23

Transport of children A few of our daycarers live in the country and need to use their own vehicles in order to come back and forth from joint activities. Transportation is allowed under the following circumstances: The trip is of educational interest. Parents have been informed and have given written permission. Children are secured in approved equipment, suitable for their ages, heights and weights. Such journeys are covered by a normal compulsory insurance policy. The same rules of transportation apply to journeys made in taxis and busses. The Daycare organization has a few Christiania bicycles, which are specially-made bicycles with a large box at the front. Inside the box are both seating and safety-belts. These bicycles can be used by daycarers that want to and have a group of children, which would enjoy such a trip. Children must wear a safety-helmet and safety-belt whilst in the bicycle.

Side 24

Parent Committee There is a Parent Committee that ensures the interests of parents and children alike. Election to the Parent Committee takes place each year at the annual meeting, which is held in the spring. After each meeting, a letter to parents is composed with a brief report of the things that have been discussed at the meeting A summary of the Parent Committee meetings can be seen on our website http://dagpleje.ikast-brande.dk. Everyone may contact members of the committee regarding questions, comments, proposals etc.

Payment The price for daycare is 2,564 kroner each month. There is no payment for the month of July. The price is valid from 1st January 2014 and it will be regulated each year. Payment is the same regardless of whether the child is ill or at home for other reasons. There is a rebate for children that have siblings in the same or another form for daycare facility. Parents have the opportunity to acquire a further rebate on the grounds if their incomes if they are below a certain level. The relevant form can be acquired through Citizen Services (Borgerservice) or from Pladsanvisningen, where children originally are admitted to the daycare system. Payment takes place each month and each payment falls on the 5th. If payment is late, there is added 1% interest for each month after the payment date. There is a charge of 250 kroner for all reminders.

Side 27

Waiting list for kindergarten Once on the list for a daycare placement, children are automatically on the waiting list for kindergarten in the same district in which they live. If another district is preferred, parents must contact Pladsanvisningen.

Transfer to kindergarten Children are automatically transferred to a kindergarten, when they reach the age of to years and nine months. If daycarer, parents and supervisor agree that a child would benefit from a few extra months in daycare, then an application can be made. The daycare manager can authorize an extension of up to three months. Part of Ikast-Brande Council Areas vision 2012 is to create continuance in children's lives. Daycarers and kindergartens therefore work together regarding this change from daycare to kindergarten. Daycarers help this transition by sharing information about the child with the new institution. This is of course subject to parent's wishes and permission

Withdrawal from daycare If a child is to be withdrawn from the daycare system, there is a months notice from the 1st or the 15th. Withdrawal must be written and can be delivered either to the Daycare office or to Pladsanvisningen. Side 28
