DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL THERAPY

SUMMER 2012

A WORD FROM THE DEPARTMENT HEAD Dear HSU PT Alumni, Blessings to each of you for all you do for the Physical Therapy profession. I continue to be amazed at how “time flies when you are having fun!” This certainly is the case around here. We have been so blessed as a department with outstanding faculty, staff, students and alumni. Thanks to you, HSU PT continues to thrive. The word is out that we provide an excellent education and produce outstanding graduates. Many of you continue to “take our students” and willingly share your talents and knowledge with them, making them better practitioners. Thank you. Since last year there has only been one significant change since Karen Freeland, Administrative Assistant in PT for 9 years saw her dream come true of working as a counselor. After earning her Master’s degree in Counseling and Human Development, the Lord finally opened the door for Karen to utilize her new set of skills. She is now working at McMurry as an admissions counselor and with “at-risk” students. Although change is hard, it is also good. Therefore, we welcome to our PT family Renee Faulks. Renee comes to us after serving as the Administrative Assistant to the Youth Pastor at Pioneer Baptist Church. She will begin full-time on July 25, 2012, so the next time you call you may her voice asking “how may I help you?” Our entry-level and t-DPT program are doing well, although we knew the transitional program would only be offered for a limited time. Next January will be the start of our LAST class of the transitional-DPT. If you have been thinking about getting your DPT, this would be the time to apply. You can find information on our website or write to Dr. Marty Hinman at [email protected]. The Department is currently exploring offering a DSc program. Our first efforts ran into a few glitches, but we are tweaking our ideas and hope to have more to share with you in the near future. If you have ideas on “tracks” that may be most helpful to you as a practitioner, please share your ideas with me at: [email protected]. You are continually in our prayers. Please remember us as well. If there is anything we can assist you with or if you are interested in joining forces to do clinical research, please let us know. Thank you again for all you do as healthcare providers. God Bless your work. Sincerely, Dr. J Janelle K. O’Connell, PT, Ph.D., DPT, ATC, LAT, CEEAA

News from our faculty and staff: ______________________________________________________________________________ MEMOS from Marty: Greetings HSU alums! Didn’t someone once tell us that all this computer technology would make our lives more efficient and productive? I’m having some serious doubts about that, but I suppose most of us would rather be too busy, than too bored. And I am definitely not bored this year. As the current chair of CAPTE, I sometimes feel like I’ve been given a second job. We are dealing with an ever-increasing growth of new PT and PTA programs (especially PTA) as well as several operational issues, so I have been traveling much more than usual this year. (My husband is thinking about installing a revolving door in our home!) Anyway, there are some interesting changes going on in our profession and I hope you’ve maintained an active membership in the APTA to keep you informed of everything that’s going on. On the home front, our transitional DPT program has been operational for 5 years now, but we intend to make next year’s class our final cohort for that program. The program has been very successful, but we all knew it would have a limited lifespan. So if you have any PT colleagues who might want to take advantage of this educational opportunity before it ends, please have them contact me. I continue to teach our research, modalities, and professional issues courses along with teaching a research course to other HSU grad students and the occasional course/workshop at other universities in New York, Tennessee, and Indiana. Of course, the most fun I’ve had was helping plan and participate in Abilene’s first Children’s Art and Literacy Festival in June which featured my favorite author, Dr. Seuss. The first year students helped me organize an event called “Inside your outside” where the kiddos learned fun ways to “Start your heart, train your brain, hustle your muscle, and tone your bone!” I don’t know how many total festival participants there were, but I think the attendance exceeded everyone’s expectations. Plans are already beginning for another festival next year with the “I Spy” books as the theme. So if life is keeping you as busy as it has for me, just remember this advice from Dr. Seuss: “So be sure when you step, step with care and great tact, and remember that life’s a great balancing act!” Be blessed! Marty Hinman ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ BLESSINGS FROM BREWER:

Greetings my fellow HSU Alumni! I hope you are enjoying your Physical Therapy profession on a daily basis and that you and your family are well! Since our previous newsletter to you, a few new items for me professionally: (1) John Gassler and I revised and updated the Neuroscience I course together, adding several clinical components as well as a neuroanatomy lab practical (ohh fun!). In addition, starting this Fall there will be a new course in our curriculum that I will be leading, a Pediatrics to Geriatrics lifespan course that will incorporate Dr. Garrett’s excellent pediatric course, but also add expert content in adolescent and geriatric PT from Dr. Rutland, Dr. Hinman and Professor Gassler. (2) After working in academia for the past 7 years at HSU, I am grateful that the university faculty and Board deemed my teaching, research, and service (students, university, professional, and church/community) met sufficient rigor to grant me tenure and promotion to Associate Professor. (3) I was blessed to have research presentations in both leadership and clinical neurology accepted at the annual TPTA and APTA conferences, as well as teach a course with DOC and John in Tampa (where we spent time with HSU PT Alum Justin Morais).

Personally, life is always busy at the Brewer household for my wonderful wife, Melanie and our 5 great and growing children. For the first time, Melanie and our 3 oldest were able to partially attend an APTA event with me! Here we are at APTA CSM in Chicago this past February (where we experienced sun, cold, and snow all in 3 days): I pray that each of you is learning and growing in all your desired areas of life, personally and professionally, through Jesus Christ our Lord. What a pleasure to be able to teach here at your PT school Alum with the greatest faculty, staff, and students in Texas. Please stay in touch! Jacob F. Brewer, PT, DPT, Ph.D., NCS ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

MUSINGS FROM MARSHA: Blessings to our wonderful graduates! What a treat to see many of you at work in the clinics! What a blessing to us to watch our grads become GREAT clinicians! Keep up the wonderful work and continued learning! I have enjoyed teaching Diagnostic Imaging in the summer courses. It has been a great learning experience to teach Clinical Foundations course for the t-DPT program here at HSU as well as Rocky Mountain t-DPT. I am so blessed to work at HSU and with the fine faculty we have. I know as you graduate, you realize what a wonderful education you had. My life has been truly blessed in the past year with the edition of 2 more grandsons. I now have 4 grandchildren: Rustyn, 3 yrs old and Beau, 15 months old, Cash 10 months old, and Tristan, who just turned 5 months old. Needless to say, this “Mimi” has been very busy with babies during the past year. The love those precious babies give is better than homemade peach cobbler!!! They all love coming to the farm! May you continue to be the BEST PT’s ! GOD BLESS AMERICA! AMERICA BLESS GOD! Marsha Rutland, PT, ScD, OCS, COMT, CSCS He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1 _______________________________________________________________________________

MOMENTOS from MARY LOU: It continues to be a joy and privilege to work with the students, staff and faculty at HSU. Our students consistently do well in the clinical settings and it’s such a thrill when you alumni serve as Clinical Instructors! I also appreciate your honoring us by being guest speakers in our classes. Students interested in pediatrics now accompany me on school visits to Winters as part of Friday’s campus clinic schedule. The school kiddos really relate well to the PT students and vice-versa. Tuesday afternoons find me playing with children in the pediatrics department at WTRC. I love riding the roller racers with them or trying on the “Gumby suits”—hope those activities never make it to Face Book! As Jill continues to work as a traveling PT, our vacations have evolved to visiting her current location. If golfing is close, that’s even better. We enjoyed the sights around Eugene, OR and ate great seafood and played on 9 exceptional golf courses close to Monterrey, CA, including Pebble Beach. Check that off Mike’s Bucket List! Blake finished his first year of studies at Texas Tech in petroleum engineering with two more to go. He and Catherine are in Vernal, UT this summer as he landed an internship with Anadarko and the company also gave Catherine a job for the 3 months. The pediatrics class has now been rolled into a life span class in the fall semester. I’m anxious to see how that turns out and feel it will be better for the students. I will also again teach/facilitate the undergraduate Intro to PT class. As always, I welcome your calls—especially with questions regarding pediatric patients. Do hope everyone is doing well and I claim Romans 8:28 for you, “We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” Blessings, Mary Lou Garrett, PT, DPT, PCS _________________________________________________________________________________________ Demises from DOC I presented “Walking, Talking, and Chewing Gum” at Lunch and Learn in June. Jacob, John, and I presented the 1st ever ? multi-faculty member presentation at the Annual Physical Therapy Association Meeting in Tampa. Our topic, Cerebrovacular Anatomy, Physiology, Pathophysiology, and Rehabilitation was well received by over 150 attendees. We have hosted the “Greatest Loser contest” on campus again this past year with successful involvement of our first year students. ________________________________________________________________________________________

GREETINGS FROM GASSLER I have just finished my second year of being on the PT faculty at HSU. I have been working on my t-DPT under Dr. Hinman's guidance. I will finish this December and (hopefully) graduate with the PT students in the Class of 2012, the first class I had the pleasure of teaching at HSU. Dr. Brewer, DO'C and I presented a three hour course on the anatomical, physiological, and clinical aspects of cerebral blood supply to the brain at the APTA Annual Conference in June 2012. Dr. Brewer and I will also present some of this material in an extended form at the Texas PT Association Annual Meeting this fall. We are excited to be one of the first schools to use Thieme's new online anatomy dissector this fall in Clinical Anatomy. - John Gassler _______________________________________________________________________________________ FINDINGS from FRIBERG???? HE still works here! __________________________________________________________________________________________

News from our wonderful HSU PT OFFICE STAFF: I am the new one on the block! Starting working at HSU DPT in June, I can already tell this is going to be an amazing experience! I have been married for 23 years and have a son, who will be attending HSU in the fall and a daughter, who is a junior in high school. We love the outdoors, training/riding horses and we are very active with watching and running up and down the road to my daughters volleyball and softball games. It is a true blessing to be working with incredible people at an awesome university. Blessings, Renee

___________________________________________________________________ __________ It’s hard to believe how quickly time goes by--am enjoying my seventh year with the PT Dept! My husband and I are adjusting to the country life and are blessed to be one of Marsha Rutland’s neighbors. Outside of work, our favorite thing to do is spend time with our children and sweet grandbaby who will be two in August. Starting in mid-August, I will be staying at home babysitting children. Blessings, Ann Jones ________________________________________________________________________________
