A specialist at your service! The business idea of the Port of Helsingborg is ”to be a competitive hub for marine and land transport”. A ­business idea can turn out to be little more than words on paper, or may be put resolutely into practice. Our port has become well known as the full service port we want it to be – a hub for the transport industry of northern Europe. Naturally, our facilities and equipment are topclass, and we have good reason for saying that the Port of Helsingborg, which is municipally owned, is extremely well run. But real success requires more than just that. Our success concept is to provide a high level of ­service. Our staff are knowledgeable and alert and are ready, round the clock, to meet our customers’ wishes and requirements. But, it’s true, nature favours us un­usually well. Our location, at the narrowest passage of the strait of Öresund, is unique.

Each year, about 200,000 TEU of goods are handled by sea, and 100,000 TEU by land. The Port is the hub. Focus on the future

We concentrate on three separate business areas: container traffic, ferry traffic/cruise ships, and bulk. But, above all, we are specialists in the area in which we believe most: con­tain­ers. An ever increasing share of the market chooses ­Helsingborg for that very reason. We handle more than 300,000 TEU* per annum, which makes us Sweden’s second largest container port.

On site – round the clock

The six kilometre-long port area is made up of specially built terminals that handle all different types of goods. Con­ tainers, general goods, oil, grain, RoRo loads and bulk goods. Approximately 20,000 tonnes of cargo are handled and about 33,000 passengers take the ferry across the strait. Every day. All year. What the people of Helsingborg see of the Port are the ferries that sail back and forth to Denmark as well as all the yacht activity in the marina. But that’s just a ­fraction of the actual port. Most of it – the most internationally well known part – is on the other side of a fence. And if you look over into the port area you will always see plenty going on, with this being the workplace for about 300 people.

The Container Specialist!

Without blowing our own trumpet all too much, we have been extremely farsighted. As far back as 1969 the first ­container crane was in place in the Port of Helsingborg. And it was at an early stage that we decided to spe­cialise. Our combiterminal, where goods are transloaded be­ tween road, rail and sea, has been a success right from day one. As an example we can mention that as many as 40 train sets loaded with containers roll out from the ­terminal each week. The combiterminal covers an area of 70,000 m2. This makes the Port of Helsingborg one of the Nordic region’s absolute largest container ter­minals.

Bull’s eye location The strait of Öresund is one of the busiest stretches of water in the world. This is the site of one of northern Europe’s leading ports: the Port of Helsingborg, located ideally, where the strait is at its narrowest. This is also Sweden’s largest port in respect of the number of vessel calls – about 45,000 each year. The Port is an important transport hub for sea freight to and from the Baltic and northern Europe. Its geographic position, as well as the excellent road and rail connections, makes it one of Europe’s most popular. About 40 shipping lines from the whole world ship their goods via Helsingborg.

The Swedish Maritime Administration has now established the significance of the Port of Helsingborg as being of national interest for Sweden. The purpose of this is to guarantee that the Port has the possibility to contribute to a well organised transport system. This means, for example, that roads to and from the Port are of national interest, and it secures Helsingborg as a logistics hub.

Despite its size, the Port functions very effectively. Twenty four hours a day, all year round, vessels are seen arriving and departing. Goods are continuously being loaded and unloaded. Thanks to the Port’s considerable transhipment capacity, goods are never left standing but can be handled the same day. The geographic location also means that vessels can moor very quickly at the quayside. a logistics hub

The Port constitutes much of the identity of the people of Helsingborg. But without the city and the business life, the Port would not have developed so positively. And vice versa. The fact is that not even the people of Helsingborg themselves are aware that they live beside Sweden’s second largest container port or that their port is the country’s largest for handling fruit and vegetables.

About forty shipping lines and train operators transport goods to different destinations in Sweden and Europe via the Port of Helsingborg. That all adds up in the space of a year. In 2007, the total was eight million tonnes! The Port’s combiterminal, opened in 2005, is an important logistics centre where it is easy to change between ship, truck and train. A significant share of operations is made up of the transhipment of containers for further transport to other destinations. Corrugated metal boxes – here to stay Container traffic is the method of transport that, globally, is increasing most. And this is perfectly understandable as the container is a very rational, practical cargo carrier. In the shortest time possible, the vessel has to be un­ loaded, loaded, leave the quay and sail out into the fairway. This means that the person deciding how the ship is to be loaded has to know what he’s doing, even if he does have computer assistance. The containers have to be registered and placed in exactly the right position. Each container has a designated place from where it is taken to the lorry, train or vessel, being moved with the help of trucks or cranes. But just moving containers isn’t enough for us. “Stripping and stuffing cans” is an area of real expertise for us.

They constitute a decisive step in the Port of Helsingborg’s endeavour to assume the role of the Container Specialist. An endeavour that is of benefit for our customers.

The combiterminal is the hub for containers and trailers for transhipment between road, rail and sea. The terminal is ­directly connected to the container port which, with its 190,000 m2 and its three ramps for RoRo ships, is mainly used for the handling of containers and ­other unitised ­cargo.

Alfa Laval exports plate heat exchangers to the US, the Middle East, the Far East – yes, the whole world. Hundreds of tonnes leave the Port of Helsingborg every year. But the goods don’t just pass through. We load the goods on behalf of Alfa Laval and prepare them for safe sea transport. We are experts at this. In addition, Alfa Laval knows that it is better, from a cost and environmental aspect, to drive to Helsingborg instead of Gothenburg or some other distant port in Sweden. We agree.

Where are our coffee beans?

The Port of Helsingborg can pride itself for being the first port in Sweden to develop and install an internet based system that provides customers as well as the Port with the possibility of tracing and tracking their goods – in real time. The PORTit system is behind this. The right information at the right time gives consignees as well as consignors excellent opportunities for planning their deliveries. 76 containers of

Both cranes weigh 765 tonnes, have a reach of 37 metres and can resolutely lift two fully loaded 20-foot containers each. The Port’s two new giants have boosted effectiveness and they work faster and cope with heavier loads than any of the other cranes.

One of the world’s busiest ferry ports The ferry traffic between Helsingborg and Helsingör is intensive. Only four kilometres separate the two towns, but that short distance is served by three different shipping ­lines, which transport vehicles and passengers every nine minutes all day long. Eleven million passengers cross here every year, and the number of ferry calls at Helsingborg is almost 44,000. The Port of Helsingborg is one of the world’s busiest ferry ports, and the busiest in Sweden. What on earth are they doing?

There is a phenomenon in Helsingborg with which every resident of the town is well acquainted. It’s called “tura”. This involves boarding the ferry to Helsingör and sailing back and forth, back and forth. You spend the time eating and drinking – a prawn sandwich, a beer, a schnapps. Or two… When you’ve had enough of the ferry, you ­disembark, usually on the home side. The Danes do the same, from their port. Our big ferries can look ridiculously small

Since 1994, Helsingborg has been a port of call for numerous major cruise ships. Among the many celebrities, we can mention the “god­ dess” of all cruise ships, Cunard Line’s Queen ­Elizabeth 2, as well as ships from Seabourn Cruises, Crystal ­Cruises, ­Silversea Cruises, Holland America Line and ­Celebrity ­Cruises.

We’re into cruising

The Port of Helsingborg is large – our beautiful city, how­ ever, is not. Cruise guests therefore have every opportunity to meet the “genuine Scandinavia”, on a small, manageable scale with everything close at hand. Helsingborg’s history starts with the Vikings, and our location at the narrowest passage into the Baltic has made its mark on the town. Helsingborg is not the largest cruise destination. But we dare to claim that Helsingborg is one of the most interest­ ing in the whole of northern Europe. We have long experience of welcoming visitors and we know the value of providing personal experiences with a ­difference, unlike visits to the major cities. Contact with friendly, ordinary people, our fresh, clean nature and our Nordic culture are always appreciated. Two countries, one port

The Port of Helsingborg can offer something not many ­others can: the opportunity to visit two countries, both ­Sweden and Denmark. The classic twin towns of Helsingborg and Helsingör lie on opposite sides of the strait of Öresund. Each one with its own special, small-town charm. It takes only twenty minutes to get there by ferry. Helsingör is one of Denmark’s oldest towns, with ­picturesque alleyways, interesting little shops, and Hamlet’s impressive castle, Kronborg.

Win-win for B2B in bulk sector Almost twenty years ago, the Port of Helsingborg took over staffing and operations in the Bulk Harbour. The Bulk ­Harbour was built to serve Kemira Kemi AB, the world’s ­largest supplier of chemicals to the paper and pulp ­industry. Kemira operates on a tough bulk market, and all opportunities for developing effective and, consequently, cheaper production are important. The fact that the expert, the Port of Helsingborg, took over all the port operations was a ­profitable step. For both parties. Kemira has also effectivised its activities by selling its surplus energy in the form of district heating. The company is now responsible for forty per cent of Helsingborg’s ­district heating. The fact that Kemira’s production generates energy also means that Kemira can offer low-price electricity. One positive outcome of this is that new companies are attracted to the port. But effective logistics and a good infrastructure naturally play their part too.

The Port unloads the vessels and ensures that the pellets are stored. But it is also the Port that sees to it that our ­houses are heated, since the staff are responsible for the pellets being loaded into the biofuel plant. 250,000 tonnes of grain in a pipe

Svenska Lantmännen is the largest group in the Swedish farming and food industry and it has dominated the grain market in Sweden since the 1960s. Lantmännen ensures that the Swedish farmers receive seed, fertiliser, plant protection products and feed, and they store and sell the products the farmers cultivate. With its huge silo plant, which is one of northern Europe’s largest, the Port of Helsingborg is an extremely important hub both for import and export.

Kemira still owns the Bulk Harbour as well as the equipment with the loading and unloading facilities and three track-bound cranes. Storage capacity is 200,000 tonnes of dry bulk, but there is also capacity for other, fluid bulk goods.

As one of the first ports in Sweden, the Port of Helsingborg has received its environmental permit. A port impacts the environment with noise and emissions from its own activities, and also from ships and other external traffic. The Port of Helsingborg, which has always been active in the area of environmental issues, has now been awarded the County Administrative Board’s special permit. This approves a number of different activities and is confir­mation for the Port that we take environmental questions seriously. This we will continue to do.

Frequent calls

W at e r l e v e l The tidal variations are negligible, and the variations in water level are small. High water may be expected when strong westerly winds prevail. Winds from the east and south cause the water level to drop. The density of seawater varies between 1,005 and 1,020.

Most of the port facilities are fenced in. During weekdays the West Harbour has a gatekeeper from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m., and the Scania Terminal (Skåneterminalen) from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. During other hours key-card or code is required. Arriving vessels can obtain the code to the pedestrian gate from the VTS Centre.

The harbour basins are easy to approach. The deep water outside breakwaters varies from 10 to 30 m. Normally vessels with good manoeuvrability can proceed directly to the quays without tugboat assistance.

The occurrence of ice in the Sound is rare. The port is open throughout the year. Icebreaking tugs are available.
