This summer, The Arizona National Guard Child & Youth Program hosted its first SeaPerch Workshop in partnership with Operation Military Kids at the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, AZ. In attendance, there were 40 dependent National Guard Youth between the ages of 13-17 years of age who took the STEM programming plunge. This hands on curriculum was designed to get students interested and inspired to learn more about science, technology, engineering and math. Youth received over 20 hours of classroom instruction and build time constructing a SeaPerch Underwater ROV( Remotely Operated Vehicle) with kits containing low cost easily accessible parts, ingenuity and a lot of elbow grease. Students learned practical tool skills such as drilling and soldering , basic engineering and most importantly teamwork. The final culmination of all their hard work was presented in the form of a series of underwater challenges with their newly constructed ROV’s and some fun in the sun at the University of Arizona Recreation Center Pool.
