An Invitation To Join Us

Dear Friend: A journey to the Holy Land is a sacred time, a Pilgrimage. It will be a blessed time as we respond to Jesus’ Words, “come, follow me.” It is an extraordinary event of a lifetime because the Gospel, read at the sites where first spoken, takes on whole new significance and meaning for each Pilgrim. The Word comes alive and can burn in our hearts where it was first heard - where Jesus walked and talked, prayed and taught, suffered, died and rose. A Pilgrimage reflects the Pilgrimage of our own lives. A Pilgrimage is a moment of grace for each of us as we visit the scenes of our salvation. I will work to so that this Pilgrimage deepens your knowledge of Scripture and, most importantly, increases your relationship and friendship with Jesus, the Lord. Please, join us in Pilgrimage to the Holy Land, 25 January 2016 to 4 February. We’ll follow in Jesus’ footsteps: Cana, Nazareth, Mount of Beatitudes, Galilee, Bethsaida, Mount Tabor, Jordan River Valley, Jerusalem, Emmaus and Visitation Church. Pilgrimages are joyful experiences. We have time to relax, get to know each other and gather together in the evening before dinner to recall the day’s events. As a Franciscan, I will work with my fellow Francis cans brothers in the Holy Land to network with them and see to it that our Pilgrimage is safe and our experiences at the sacred sites moments and memories of faith and grace. Join us on this Pilgrimage. We chose this time of year for value, cool weather and ease of access to holy places and sacred sites. I look forward to your joining us on this Pilgrimage. Sincerely,

Rev Rusty Shaughnessy, OFM

Our Daily Itinerary

MON, JAN 25, DAY 1: DEPART: Today we depart Los An geles en route to Tel Aviv via Istanbul with complimentary meals and beverages served on board. TUE, JAN 26, DAY 2: ARRIVE TEL AVIV / NETANYA: Upon arrival in Tel Aviv late at night we will be met by our Catholic Travel Centre representative and proceed to our accommodations in Netanya to rest from our journey. WED, JAN 27, DAY 3: NETANYA /CAESAREA BY THE SEA / CANA/ NAZARETH/ TIBERIAS: After a sleep-over and a good breakfast, we travel to Caesarea Maritime where Peter came to understand that the Good News was not for Jews only, but for the whole world. Here he baptized the Ro man Centurion, Cornelius, and his family. Our next stop is Cana where Jesus began His public ministry in the Gospel of St. John. Here we visit the Franciscan chapel where we invite couples to renew their wedding vows. We continue to Nazareth, the site of Joseph and Mary’s home and the town where Jesus played as a child, learned a trade, and grew to manhood. After included lunch at the Convent of Sisters of Nazareth, we visit St. Joseph Church and celebrate the opening Mass of our pilgrimage at the Basilica of Annunciation. We continue to our accommodations where dinner awaits us. (B, L, D) THU, JAN 28, DAY 4: TIBERIAS: SEA OF GALILEE SITES: This morning, we board a wooden boat for a brief ride on the Sea of Galilee, recalling the various encounters of Our Lord with his disciples on and around this body of water. We will also have an opportunity to view the ‘Jesus Boat,’ a recently discovered fishing vessel dating from around the time of Jesus. We continue on to Tabgha and visit the Church of the Loaves and the Fishes, commemorating where Jesus fed the crowd of 5,000. Next, we visit the site known as “Peter’s Primacy,” where after his resurrection, Jesus met with his disciples and told Peter to “feed my lambs; feed my sheep” (John 21:9). We will have an included lunch at Pilger House, then continue our day’s visit at Capernaum where Jesus began his Galilean ministry. Here we’ll explore the synagogue which dates to the time of Christ and see as well the site

of the Apostle Peter’s home. We celebrate Mass in the church which has a glass-floor and is constructed over the site, allowing us to peer down into the excavated ruins of Peter’s house. We return to our hotel for dinner and the evening. (B, L, D) FRI, JAN 29, DAY 5: TIBERIAS: MT. OF BEATITUDES, CAESAREA PHILIPPI, KURSI & BETHSAIDA: This morning we celebrate Mass at Mt. of Beatitudes, which offers us a stunning panoramic vista of the Sea of Galilee. Afterwards we make our way north of the Sea of Galilee to an area where Jesus did much of his ministry. We visit the Banias National Park-Caesarea Philippi, where Jesus told Simon, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church” (Matt 16:13). Driving thru the hilly countryside, we stop at Kursi, where we see the ruins of a Byzantine monastery. The site is significant to many Christians because it has been identified by tradition as the site where Jesus healed two men possessed by demons (Matthew 8:28-33). We visit Bethsaida as well, home of Apostles Philip, Simon and Andrew. Returning to the Pilger House near Tiberias the balance of our afternoon is at leisure. Dinner tonight is at our accommodations. (B, D) SAT, JAN 30, DAY 6: TIBERIAS / MT. TABOR / JERICHO / BAPTISMAL SITE / JERUSALEM: This morning, we depart the scene of the early ministry of Jesus in Galilee and head for Jerusalem where he suffered, died and rose from the dead. But first, we stop, as he did, on Mount Tabor, the site of the Transfiguration. Here we celebrate Mass. Then, we travel down the Jordan Valley to the city of Jericho, which Jesus also visited with His disciples (Mark 10:46-52). Here we view the remains of the ancient walled city, one of the oldest cities in the world. We enjoy some time at leisure for lunch on our own. Back on our motor coach we visit the baptismal site. A short distance from Jericho, this site holds the oldest and most ancient tradition for being the place of Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist in the Jordan River (Matthew, 3: 1317). Here we will renew our baptismal promises. We then begin to climb the mountain to the Holy City of Jerusalem. Upon arrival in the city of Jerusalem, we make our entry

to the Holy Sepulchre church and then continue to our accommodations for dinner and the evening. (B, D)

return to our accommodations for din ner. Dinner is served at our hotel. (B, D)

SUN, JAN 31, DAY 7: JERUSALEM: EXCURSION TO BETHLEHEM: This morning we travel to Shepherds’ Field where we visit the Shepherds’ Cave, calling to mind the shepherds who kept watch over their flocks on the night of Our Lord’s birth. Here we celebrate Mass. Then we continue to Bethlehem and make our way to Manger Square which stands in front of one of the oldest of Christian churches, the Church of the Nativity. Bending low so as to enter through the Door of Humility, we enter the Church and descend into the Grotto of the Nativity. Beneath the Altar, a 14 pointed Silver Star marks the exact spot surrounded by the Latin inscription: HIC DE VIRGINE MARIA JESUS CHRISTUS NATUS (Here Jesus Christ was born to the Virgin Mary). We also visit St. Catherine’s Church and St. Jerome’s Chapel. After our visit, we will have time to visit a souvenir shop owned by local Christians. We return to our accommodations in Jerusalem for dinner and the evening. (B, D)

TUE, FEB 2, DAY 9: JERUSALEM: VIA DOLOROSA, HOLY SEPULCHRE & OLD CITY: This morning after breakfast we visit the Church of St. Anne & Pool of Bethseda where Jesus healed a paralytic (John 5), and the Shrine at the Ecce Homo Arch, the site of the scourging of Jesus (Matt 27:26-31). Then we start to walk the Via Dolorosa, the Way of the Cross, which brings us to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the site of the Resurrection of Our Lord. Here we will celebrate Mass. Then we can enjoy a more in depth tour of this place so vital to our faith. After some time for lunch on our own, our guide will take us to the Western Wall of the ancient Temple destroyed in 70 AD. This is the most sacred place for Jews and a place of prayer. The rest of the afternoon is on our own. Dinner will be served at our hotel. (B, D)

MON, FEB 1, DAY 8: MT. OF OLIVES, GETHSEMANE, CAIAPHAS’ HOUSE & MT. ZION: Today we travel to the Mount of Olives where we visit the Pater Noster shrine, commemorating the Lord’s Prayer in languages from around the world. We continue our way down the Mount to visit the beautiful little church, Dominus Flevit (“The Lord wept”). It was here that Jesus wept over Jerusalem (Luke 19:41) prior to his death. We then walk further down the Mount of Olives to the Garden of Gethsemane to visit the garden and the Church of All Nations located there. After lunch on our own, we cross the Kidron Valley where Jesus was led up to the Palace of Caiaphas for His first interrogation by the High Priest. The site is known today as St. Peter in Galicantu (“crowing rooster”). Then we make our way to Mt. Zion, where we visit the Upper Room, commemorating the Last Supper. We celebrate Mass at the Franciscan Chapel Cenacle. Nearby we come to the Benedictine Church of the Dormition. Later, we

WED, FEB 3, DAY 10: JERUSALEM : EMMAUS - ABU GOSH & EIN KAREM: This morning we drive to Emmaus Abu Gosh. Here we celebrate the final Mass of our journey. It was on the road to Emmaus that Jesus appeared to his disciples following his resurrection and revealed himself in the breaking of the bread (Luke 24:13-35). Then we continue to Ein Karem, traditional site of the Visitation of Mary with Elizabeth and Zechariah. We visit as well the Church of John the Baptist. In the afternoon we return to Jerusalem for some leisure time. Dinner is served at our hotel. (B, D) THU, FEB 4, DAY 11: RETURN TO THE USA: Early this morning we transfer to the Tel Aviv airport with our suitcases filled with memories of our Pilgrimage in the Footsteps of Jesus. Note: While no changes are anticipated, there may be unforeseen occasions when certain alterations become necessary to this itinerary, either due to changes in airline schedules or for other reasons.
