Welcome to HAuNTcon 2014! Howdy Haunters! Welcome to Houston and the Haunted Attraction National Tradeshow and Conference (HAuNTcon). This year HAuNTcon has joined forces with the Halloween & Party Expo (HPE). In addition to the excellent haunt tours, amazing education, packed tradeshow and over the top costume ball, that HAuNTcon attendees have grown accustomed to, the HAuNTcon badge will also get you a sneak preview of what will be in Halloween stores this October. In the past, entrance into the HPE show was restricted to wholesale buyers. Purchasing from the HPE show requires a wholesale license and large minimum purchase that most haunters cannot qualify for. However, for the first time ever, the wholesale Halloween industry has invited HAuNTcon attendees (over 18 years only) for an unprecedented opportunity to attend their show any day during the HAuNTcon show and Tuesday workshops. Check the schedule at a glance for show hours and other activities like the Saturday Style Show. Combining with HPE necessitated that HAuNTcon change our show days. This year the preshow was on Thursday and Friday and the conference runs Saturday through Monday with the All Day Advanced Workshops on Tuesday. Haunt Tours are on Friday, Sunday and Monday nights. What has not changed is the annual Saturday night HAuNTer's costume ball. DJ extraordinaire Brian Bayliss will once again be rocking the party with the latest dance and Halloween music., THIS social event of the Haunting season will be located on the third floor of the George R. Brown Convention Center and the spooktacular starts at 7 pm and runs until 2 am, with a Bar B Q buffet, free beer sponsored by Froggy’s Fog and free sodas sponsored by Von Charon. A cash bar is also available. Get into your favorite character costume and join us for this off season celebration of Halloween. Costumes suggested but not required. Be sure to pick up the HAuNTcon 2014 commemorative T-shirt, with art work by Chad Savage of Sinister Visions. Chad is also the web designer for the amazing HAuNTcon web site that you used to learn about this year’s show. The badge lanyards are sponsored by Vortex Chillers.

Please join us Friday at midnight in the Crowne Plaza Hotel Bayou Ballroom to celebrate the life of Brian David Wolfe, who lost a valiant fight with cancer last October. Brian was a huge supporter of HAuNTcon and haunt industry icon. There will be a toast to our fallen comrade, followed by a live action benefiting the Brian Wolfe Memorial Fund. If you would like to donate something for the auction, bring it to the hotel before the auction or if you cannot make it to the hotel you can still make a donation through www. gofundme.com/brianwolfe. A great off-season chance to see the best haunts in the Houston market, the HAuNTcon 2014 Haunt tours began on Thursday morning when buses rolled out of the Crowne Plaza parking lot for the 2-day HAuNTcon Pre-Show Haunt Tour. The HAuNTcon Friday Night Kick-Off Tour was of the multi-element event ScreamWorld owned by long time haunter Jim Fetterly. But the haunt tours didn't stop there. The Sunday Night Haunt Tour includes 4 attractions in two locations. the Heart Stoppers Fright 3HaunTs, owned by Sonny Guzman and TerrorDome owned by Shannon Brinkley. The Monday Night Haunt Tour includes Harold Lack’s Creepy Hollow Haunted Houses and Cindy and Rodney Davis‘ Fearshire Farms rounds out this year's tours, each pulled out all the stops to frighten the industry’s most difficult audience; other haunters! Thank you to all the haunts that graciously opened their doors to HAuNTcon attendees. We know sharing your haunts off season is expensive and stressful, but your efforts are greatly appreciated. HAuNTcon prides itself on bringing attendees the finest most diverse education program imaginable, and this year is no exception! With 54 hours of seminars, workshops and demos, the schedule is packed with topics ranging from Haunt Design to Actor Training, from Prop Building to Set Dressing. Ever looking for more advanced topics, this year HAuNTcon reached out to experts beyond the haunt community and brought in speakers like Julie Dion of Dion Marketing, an advertising consultant for the amusement park industry to offer seminars on Sponsorships and Media Buying. Industry notables have also been brought in to offer advanced demos and workshops. R.J. Haddy, Roy Wooley, Tom Devlin, Eric Zapata and Laney Chantal are all past contestants on the Syfi Channel’s hit show FaceOff, and will be offering seminars and workshops. Ed and Marsha Edmunds will be conducting a panel discussion about their hit Travel Channel TV show Making Monsters. All education is held in the George R. Brown Convention Center. Check this program for room numbers and

times. All workshops have limited seating and materials fees apply. The education continues after the tradeshow closes with the Tuesday All Day Advanced Workshops! World champion body painter Nick Wolfe of Evil Twin FX is offering hands-on instruction on making your own custom mask. Tom Devlin is offering an all-day airbrush makeup class. Shayne Torrans is offering a set building, distressing and set dressing class. And yours truly will be offering an in depth How to Get Started in the haunted attraction industry class. The HAuNTcon tradeshow floor is chocked full of “Cash and Carry” exhibitors displaying the latest in props, equipment and services. The sold out show floor is anchored by Distortions Unlimited, Pale Night Productions, AEO Studios and our title sponsor Darklight Precision Lighting. Bargain haunters will be excited about the Annual Haunted Garage Sale to be held on Sunday immediately following the close of the tradeshow floor at 5:30. If you have something to sell there is still time to join in the "feeding frenzy" this event creates. The haunters’ hotel is the Crowne Plaza Downtown Houston, All the haunt tours will depart from the hotel. The Hospitality Suite is in the second floor Cougar Room. Open Thursday through Monday nights starting at 10 p.m. offering late night snacks and set-ups, join fellow haunters for this nightly networking opportunity. Producing HAuNTcon requires extensive man hours from many people. We are blessed with a talented hard working volunteer steering committee that puts the show together for you. There would be no HAuNTcon without these dedicated people and we cannot thank them enough. My wife Jeanne and I know that it is you, the attendees, speakers and exhibitors that make HAuNTcon a success! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts, for coming and if there is anything we can do to make your experience better, please let us know! Now let the fun begin!!! Jeanne and Leonard Pickel

Cliff Holverson has been in love with monsters from a very early age and that devotion to the dark side has literally bled over into his career choice. He began doing make up on himself and family members in the fifth grade after discovering a local costume shop was stocked with Ben Nye makeup and has never quit. From his humble beginnings of shocking classmates and teachers with his bloody theatrics to interviewing such professionals as Evil Dead’s Tom Sullivan Mark Shostrom, Cliff has made blood and guts his life and has plenty more to share. Mandy Holverson only wanted to be two things when she grew up: a vampire or a ghost. Luckily a career in special effects allows her to be both, whenever she wants. As a child in Cleveland, Ohio she lived in a haunted house which filled her memories with plenty of horrors, and now she has the opportunity to bring that horror to your house. Along with a background in theatre, both on the stage and off, Mandy has the skills to bring the thrills. Always busy, Mandy not only runs another business, but along with Cliff, managed a popular meet up group. A Zombie walk held by

Darklight was founded in spring of 2010 as a manufacturer of special effects lighting equipment catering to the themed attraction industry. We specialize in illumination in low-light and space constrained environments where traditional theatrical luminaires are not suitable. The “Precision” series of LED fixtures were developed with compactness, safety, modularity, and ease of use in mind, allowing lighting designers to illuminate environments that were not previously possible with larger fixtures. In 2011, we expanded our product line to include self-developed compact controllers that add a dynamic element to our luminaires. In late 2012, we launched a new line of products catering to the professional lighting and architectural markets called the “Gantom” series. The industry recognized Gantom iQ, an ultra-compact image projector, spearheads our focus into the specified lighting

Distortions Unlimited Hidden in an industrial warehouse in Greeley, Colorado, Distortions Unlimited’s owners, Ed and Marsha Edmunds, make monsters. Their quality props, masks and creations have been a mainstay of the dark amusement industry since 1978. Long creative hours are spent in gray-walled offices with brain-eating hunchbacks, wall-scaling zombies and docile 3-foot tall aliens. The working environment looks more like a nightmare manufactory than a place of business. As a child and fan of television shows such as The Outer Limits, The Time Machine and the original Star Trek, Ed enjoyed creating masks and putting on performances as monster characters. Continued experimentations with makeup turned his artistic hobby into a true talent at a young age, and among other stage makeup and prop work, he started his mask-making operation, Distortions Unlimited, while still in high school. Through college, Ed developed his company’s products, sculpting a severed finger, molding bloody hands and becoming one of the first in the industry to sculpt cut-off arms. After college, Ed met Marsha Taub, a biology student from the University of Northern Colorado. Sharing a workplace, dedication to a faith in Christ, artistic passion and creative yearning, they became a team – one so strong, they exchanged marriage vows in 1992! In its infancy Distortions was a diamond in the rough, making its first home in one bedroom of a two-bedroom apartment. Pumping out strictly masks, Ed worked to bridge the gap between the cheap masks he had previously painted and their high-priced American counterparts. Now in a Greeley,

My work includes Season 5 of FaceOff, work with Marilyn Manson, MageeFX FX shop, Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights, Universal Studios Grinchmas. I come from a very small town in Michigan called Manitou Beach. When I was 18 I decided I wanted to be bigger than the town I grew up in. When I was 19 my family helped make that dream become possible. Immediately after my 20th birthday, I packed up a suitcase and left to Hollywood, CA with a very small budget. I was going to become a makeup artist after attending the Master’s Makeup Course at Cinema Makeup School. Growing up going to a Catholic school, I wasn’t allowed to watch many horror movies in the house. I however was allowed to watch all the Universal Monster Movies I wanted. Jack Pierce quickly became a childhood hero. It has been almost four years since my big move, and I have really proved myself to my family and friends

Opening Your First Haunted Attraction: Without Losing An Arm And A Leg by Leonard Pickel, Hauntrepreneurs(R) Themed Attraction Design and Consulting

9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Halloween has become a phenomenon in the United States and around the world, and every year more and more people are opening “darkly themed” Halloween Attractions. Even in the present economic downturn some haunted events are breaking attendance records, while other attractions are going out of business. This comprehensive and detailed step by step “how-to” session fea-

tures the “do’s and don’ts” on getting an attraction open, keeping it open and making enough money to survive for both a for-profit dark attraction and charity Halloween Event, but even a well-established event will learn from Leonard’s 35 years of professional design and consulting experience. From choosing the attraction name and URL for the event through pricing and dates of operation, topics covered include, creating a business plan, location requirements, safety code compliance, attraction style, attraction design, multi-element approach, timed ticketing, advertising, operations and answers to the

most frequently asked questions: “How big should the attraction be, how much should I charge, and how much will it cost?”

In this all day session, attendees will explore the reasons why some attractions prosper while others fail.

“A Haunted Attraction is a business and as in any other business, what you don’t know about this specialized field can put you out of business before you get started,” explains haunt industry veteran Leonard Pickel who will share with attendees how to maximize profits while minimizing costs and effort while describing what he sees as the best model for creating a successful Halloween Event. NOTE: Bring your wifi enabled laptop or tablet, your scary designs, theme ideas and haunting dreams to this never before offered session.

Schedule

HAuNTcon’s Hands-on Workshops provide participants first-hand instructional opportunities to create a haunted item or prop that they get to take home when completed. While at the same time learning techniques that they can take back to their events and use on a much larger scale. A small materials fee is charged to cover costs and an experienced instructor guides attendees step by step to completion of the project.

Business Classes Business Session are in Room 320C In an industry centered on macabre subjects like death and dying, the one thing you don’t want flat-lining is your business. HAuNTcon has brought the brightest specialists in their respective fields of marketing, social media, sponsorship, getting started and more to share their knowledge and experience with you. For haunters, the technicalities of business can be overwhelming. These very important classes are chosen to help make running your haunt easier, more lucrative… and more fun! Times, topics and speakers are subject to change.

Saturday 8:30 - 9:30 am

Critical Components Of A Haunted Attraction Website Jeffrey Ward A website is critical for any haunter, but is your site working as effectively as

it should to promote your attraction? From mobile optimization, social integration, and the very latest trends in website marketing, learn what goes into a successful website and discover what you could be doing differently to bring more customers to your event.

Saturday 10:00 - 11:00 am Media Buying Strategies: Stretching Your Advertising Dollar Julie Dion How to get the most out of your advertising budget. Media buying is a task often left to business owners. This course will help both those who buy their own media and ones that work with ad agencies. Media buyers have more negotiating power than ever before putting them in the driver’s seat. This course will focus on how to strategize, plan and execute your next media buy. By negotiating your advertising dollars you will learn how to combine new media options with traditional advertising to produce cutting-edge, cost-effective marketing strategies and campaigns. Attendees will learn valuable tips on buying efficient media schedules and the

Page 32 — HAuNTcon 2014 — Houston, TX — January 23 - 28

importance of negotiating value-added components (the new rule instead of the old variable) from media reps (examples: on-air giveaways, trade, contests, email blasts, social media and web inclusion). Attendees will leave with the tools to successfully buy their next media campaign.

Saturday 3:00 - 4:00 pm Haunted House Safety: Don’t Let the Details Kill Ya’ Fire Marshal Todd Mitchel & Shannon Brinkley Just as in any business, safety and fire codes should be part of your business plan. The importance of safety and complying with local codes not only makes a safer haunted attraction but decreases your liability. This class will cover basic safety and fire codes that deal with a Haunted Attraction built in a structure, based on Harris County (Houston) Building Codes and the International Fire Code. If you are planning a haunted attraction start up, this class is a must! It will help you with information for basic fire code and safety compliance.

Hands-on Workshops HAuNTcon’s Hands-on Workshop sessions are where attendees “make” an item or prop, and when it is completed, “take” it with them. A small fee is charged for the materials and an experienced instructor guides attendees step by step to completion of the project. Along the way, participants will learn valuable techniques that they can also take with them and use on future projects.

Monday 8:30 - 9:30 am Psychological Horror In Haunts And Performances Michael Maxim With the customer base of haunted attractions desensitized by the gore seen in movies thanks to CGI and multiple takes with FX teams, haunted attractions as well as dark entertainers need to work on maximizing their attractions and/or performances by increasing the psychological scare factors in their haunts. All of these can be achieved in various ways, but some of them are often overlooked by inexperienced haunters.

Page 38 — HAuNTcon 2014 — Houston, TX — January 23 - 28

Our seminar on using Psychological Horror to Maximize your Scare Factor covers ways to do just that. From the proper placement of distraction pieces and pop-outs to timing...from a unique blend of scripted and improv style acting instead of a script and or basic acting areas that allow little to no change up in performances by your actors and more. There are many things one can do simply to add to the psychological scare, but our seminar focuses mainly on the acting aspect. How an actor can use the power of psychological horror in the way they move, the lines they use, and their look to heighten their personal scare factor. We open by talking about the little things you can do in rooms themselves to heighten the psychological scare factor and segway into the acting since a proper set with multiple options helps your actors out in the long run. We cover techniques like timing, multitasking while acting, observation to body language and conversations, dialog, movement, and more. Don’t just settle on getting the startle scares that will rarely work on customers that go through your attraction multiple times in a night. Begin to shape your acting crew into a crew of monsters and ghouls that will not only scare your customers, but also get into their heads subconsciously so the customers take the scares home with them.

Ed and Marsha Edmunds Hidden in an industrial warehouse in Greeley, Colorado, Distortions Unlimited’s owners, Ed and Marsha Edmunds, make monsters. Their quality props, masks and creations have been a mainstay of the dark amusement industry since 1978. Long creative hours are spent in gray-walled offices surrounded by brain-eating hunchbacks, wall-scaling zombies and docile 3-foot tall aliens. The working environment looks more like a nightmare manufactory than a place of business. As a child Ed enjoyed creating masks and putting on performances as monster characters. His artistic hobby became a true talent and Ed started his mask-making company, Distortions Unlimited, while still in high school. Making its first home in one bedroom of a two-bedroom apartment, Distortions Unlimited is now in an industrial-zoned 24,000 square-foot facility, with a year-round staff of artisans. After college, Ed met biology student Marsha Taub, who shared Ed’s dedication to a faith in Christ, artistic passion and creative yearning. The

two became a team – one so strong, they exchanged marriage vows in 1992! For the future of Distortions, “higher impact” and “more intense” animations are the goals, and with ever more creative ideas, the plans at Distortions are in fact ‘Unlimited.’ Ed and Marsha now spend their days in a warehouse akin to a cannibal’s buffet. Hands and feet top a line of metal spikes, a row of glassy-eyed zombies peer from behind a rail of severed heads. They are still making monsters, but now they make them by the thousands.
