An Invitation To Join Us

Dear Alums and Friends, I invite you to join me on a historic journey to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Mount Saint Mary’s University and the legacy of the Sisters of St. Joseph.  It is a CSJ Heritage Tour to France – In the Footsteps of the Founders.  We will begin our journey in Paris where we will immerse ourselves in France today. We will see the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower, as well as Notre Dame Cathedral, Sainte-Chapelle, the Left Bank, and Montmartre.  Then we will travel to Le Puy-en-Velay, the historic town where the Sisters of St. Joseph were founded in 1650.  In Le Puy, the Sisters taught lace-making to impoverished young women so they could have a means of supporting themselves.  We will visit sites that mark their beginning and experience the culture of modern day Le Puy where lace-making is still an art. We will also visit the charming cities of St. Etienne and Monistol where Mother St. John Fontbonne began as superior of the order.  Our trip will include several days in Lyon to explore the spaces and places where Mother St. John Fontbonne expanded the reach of the CSJs as well as experience regional foods and culture.  This tour is sure to be popular, so make your reservations without delay.  I look forward to traveling with you as we explore the origins of our CSJs and enjoy the culture and cuisine of France.  Sincerely,

Ann McElaney-Johnson President Mount Saint Mary’s University

Our Daily Itinerary

THURS, MAY 26: ARRIVE IN PARIS / TRANSFER TO HOTEL: As we will all be making our own airline arrangements, upon landing, please secure a taxi ride to the hotel. Settle in. We gather this evening for dinner. (D) FRI, MAY 27, DAY 2: PARIS: CITY TOUR OF NOTRE DAME, ST. CHAPELLE, LEFT BANK, SACRE COEUR & SEINE RIVER CRUISE: After breakfast we begin our tour of Paris, beginning at Notre Dame Cathedral. On the spot where Notre Dame now stands, the Romans had once built a temple to Jupiter. In 1160, Bishop Maurice de Sully ordered the original Notre Dame known then as “the parish church of the kings of Europe” demolished.  Next we visit Sainte-Chapelle (“Holy Chapel”). It was erected by Louis IX, King of France, to house precious relics. The most beautiful aspects of the chapel, and considered the best of their type in the world, are its stained glass and rose windows. We enjoy a walking tour of the famous Left Bank of Paris – this is the Paris of another era; the Paris of artists, writers, and philosophers, including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ernest Hemingway. F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein and dozens of other members of the great artistic community at Montparnasse. We will have some time for lunch on our own. This afternoon, for those interested, we include a visit to the picturesque and charming district of Montmartre. The mountain top is dominated by the Basilica of the Sacred Heart (Sacre Coeur). Ignatius of Loyola and his companions took their first vows near here, while Ignatius was pursuing his studies in Paris. Others might be interested in visiting the Louvre Museum instead. Dinner this evening is on our own to explore the local restaurants. (B) SAT, MAY 28, DAY 3: PARIS: EXCURSION TO GIVERNY & LEISURE: After breakfast, we depart to Giverny – site of Monet’s Gardens. Inspired by the beautiful, peaceful and colorful countryside, Claude Monet settled in Giverny in 1883 for the remaining 43 years of his life. We visit the painter’s house, the former studio and the wonderful flower gardens. Discover the Japanese bridge and water garden, which was his main source of inspiration while at Giverny. After our visit and some time for lunch on our own, we return to Paris for some time at leisure. Some of us may wish to go museum hopping, as Paris hosts some of the finest art museums in the world, including: Pompidou Centre, the Picasso Museum, Musee d’Orsay, the Rodin

Museum, or the Louvre. We gather for dinner at a local restaurant in Paris. (B, D) SUN, MAY 29, DAY 4: PARIS / WINE TASTING / LE PUY-EN-VELAY: We depart Paris this morning by motor coach and make our way south to Le Puy-en-Velay. We stop en route for a winetasting at a local vineyard. We arrive in Le-Puy in time for dinner and the evening. We will have the option of attending mass at a local church today. (B, WT, D) MON, MAY 30, DAY 5: LE PUY-EN-VELAY: VISIT OF THE CENTRE, TOUR OF THE TOWN: Le Puy-en-Velay is the beautiful, historic town where the Sisters of St. Joseph were founded in 1650. The six young women founders were assisted by the Jesuit priest Jean-Pierre Medaille, and were deeply influenced by his Ignatian spirituality. The kitchen where these first six sisters met can be found here.  Today, Le Puy is a city of some 25,000 inhabitants, and is still known for its lace-making, as well as for its vibrant arts. Recognized as a spiritual center long before the 1600s, Le Puy’s shrine to the Virgin became a major site of pilgrimage during the 10th century.  We begin our visit of LePuy with a presentation at the Centre, giving its history, vision and mission. We continue with a tour of the town, including Merchants Square, Eglise de College, the chapel of the Jesuit school and the first sisters’ parish church,  and  Magic Square, located at the 12th Century Chapelle St-Clair. A small garden surrounds the chapel.

The balance of the day is at leisure.  Those of us who wish may visit the stunning Chapel Saint-Michel D’Aiguilhe on top of a volcanic plug, which rises steeply 82m above the surrounding area, reached by 265 steps! There is a rail as well as resting seats along the way. We gather for dinner this evening. (B, D) TUES, MAY 31, DAY 6: LE PUY-EN-VELAY: VISIT OF THE CENTRE, KITCHEN OF THE FIRST SISTERS, NOTRE DAME DU PUY CATHDRAL & STATUE: This morning we return to the Centre for a presentation of the blossoming of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph from its beginning in Le Puy to its expansion throughout the world, including a helpful visual depiction of our “family tree”. The Sisters will be happy to answer any questions you may have.   This afternoon, we visit the kitchen where the first six sisters met. Later, we visit Le Puy’s shrine to the Virgin, the Cathedral of Notre Dame du Puy, a UNESCO World

Heritage Site and a major site of pilgrimage during the 10th century and highly venerated for its Black Madonna statue. Contemporary pilgrims still depart for Santiago de Compostela from this Cathedral. We will have some time for our own personal reflections. After our visit, those of us who wish may climb to the Iron Statue of the Virgin. The balance of the day is at leisure. Dinner this evening is on our own to explore the local restaurants. (B)   WED, JUNE 1, DAY 7: LE PUY-EN-VELAY: EXCURSION TO ST. ETIENNE & MONISTROL: This morning, we visit the town of St. Etienne where the CSJs began to grow in numbers. Called “The Black Daughters” by the people of St. Etienne, the women worked hard to support themselves and help others. Through the efforts of these good women and others, the community found new life. After some time for lunch on our own, we stop in Monistrol where Mother St. John Fontbonne began as superior of the Order. We gather this evening for dinner. (B, D) THURS, JUNE 2, DAY 8: LE PUY-EN-VELAY / BASEN-BASSET / LYON: ROOMS OF MOTHER ST. JOHN: After breakfast, we depart for Lyon, stopping first in Bas-en-Basset, where Jeanne Fontbonne was born.  The Congregation of Saint Joseph was disbanded during the French Revolution. The convents and chapels of the community were confiscated in 1793. The Sisters were forced to choose between returning to their families or leaving France to join communities in other countries. Some Sisters who remained became martyrs because they refused to take the Civil Oath. Others were imprisoned. The congregation was re-established in 1807 by Mother St. John Fontbonne in Lyon. As word of the isters’ services and good deeds grew, dioceses throughout France requested the services of the restored Congregation. Upon arrival in Lyon, we visit the convent of St. Joseph, where Mother St. John’s room is preserved by the Sisters and where many artifacts and archives are on display. Afterward we visit the burial site of Mother Fontbonne. We transfer to our accommodations for dinner and the evening. (B, D) FRI, JUNE 3, DAY 9: LYON: MT. FOURVIERE, CATHEDRAL ST. JOHN BAPTISTE, RIVER CRUISE & LEISURE: This morning we visit Lyon, the capital city of the Rhone Alps region. We begin our tour at the Basilica

Notre-Dame de Fourviere. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, who is said to have saved the city of Lyon from the plague in 1643, the basilica is today a UNESCO World Heritage site. We also visit the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.  After some time for lunch on our own, we enjoy a relaxing one-hour cruise on the Rhone and Saone Rivers. The balance of the day is at leisure. Some of us may wish to visit the visit Parc de la Tete d’Or with its lovely lake and botanical gardens. Dinner tonight is on our own. (B) SAT, JUNE 4, DAY 10: LYON: EXCURSION TO ANNECY: This morning we travel to the charming town of Annecy. Taking advantage of its marvelous position just at the end of Annecy Lake, the town of Annecy has succeeded in preserving its architectural and historical heritage, including the canals to which it owes its description as the “Venice of the Alps” Francis de Sales was born nearby in 1567, and received some of his earliest education in Annecy where in 1610, with St. Jane Frances de Chantal, he founded a new religious community for women. This order was quickly forced by the local bishop to become cloistered. Francis de Sales was bishop from 1602 to 1622. He was a strong influence on the spirituality of the CSJs. We will visit the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, built in the early 16th century as a Franciscan friary, which was the Cathedral  of  Francis de Sales, and is home to a number of Baroque pieces from the 16th century. The Basilique de la Visitation, built in the 20th century, contains the tombs of  Francis de Sales and Jeanne de Chantal and has a magnificent view of the town. We enjoy a festive farewell lunch at a local restaurant then have some free time before returning to Lyon. Dinner is on our own this evening. (B, L) SUN, JUNE 5, DAY 11: OUR JOURNEY IS COMPLETE: This morning after breakfast we are free to transfer via taxi to the Lyon Airport or to continue our independent travel. (B)   NOTE: : All visits to CSJ sites in Lyon and Le Puy and presentations by local sisters will be arranged by MSMU. While no changes are anticipated, there might be occasions when unforeseen changes become necessary to this itinerary.
