The Salling girls are 8 sculptures made in bronze by the Danish artistErik Dahl Nygaard. They are all 2 metres tall and are situated at 8 different places in the Skive region in beautiful surroundings, which is not a coincidence as it is a clear invitation to explore nature. If you wish to see the Salling girls, you have to go out in the open! With a few exceptions, all the naked girls are placed in the yachting harbours along the coasts. They stand watching the sea, and they are therefore exposed to the changing weather at the fjord. This route starts at Skive Harbour and leads you to all 8 Salling girls – or to the 8 “Little Mermaids” of the Limfjord. Route 1 of 6

1. Salling Girl No. 1 at Skive Harbour The whole harbour area in Skive and the water sports harbour have recently been renovated, and the water sports clubs have got modern club houses. Moreover, the area has received its own brand new hotel called Hotel Strandtangen, and naturally Salling girl No. 1 has been placed right beneath the hotel. 2. The Churches in Skive The church Skive Kirke was built in 189698. Normally, the church tower faces west and the chancel east. However, the architect H.J. Holm has turned the axis north-south, partly to make the church

more visible, and partly to make the church part of the town. The church Vor Frue Kirke is one of Denmark’s beautiful churches dating from the Middle Ages, approximately from the year 1200, and it has been enlarged several times. When the church became too small, there were plans to tear it down at the end of the 1800s, but in 1887 the fi nding of frescoes saved the church. The frescoes, which date back to 1522, were completely exposed in 1903. Please note the large picture of Saint Kristoffer, the Saint of the wayfarers, above the organ wishing you a safe journey!

16. Salling Girl No. 7 in Jebjerg Town Park Salling girl No. 7 is situated by the lake in the town park at Jebjerg. Jebjerg is a fine example of how quickly a railway town can grow. The line from Skive to Glyngøre opened in 1884, and soon a dairy, an inn and a folk school followed at the railway station in Jebjerg. In the beginning of the 1890s, there were two large grocery stores, a co-operative store, two bakeries, two butcher’s shops, two shoemaker’s shops, a book and paper shop, several craft and small industry companies and one of the largest bicycle stores in the country. It was the highly gifted entrepreneur Esper Andersen, who was involved in almost everything going on in Jebjerg. He founded and owned the dairy, he was a gymnastics teacher in the folk school, and he made it possible for the author Jeppe Aakjær to find peace and tranquillity when he needed a break away from his farm Jenle. Indeed, Jebjerg was a very

important town for Jeppe Aakjær’s work. Here, he had a sanctuary at dairy owner Esper Andersen’s, and here he wrote the novel “Children of Wrath”. In November 2009, the society Aakjærselskabet raised a sculpture at the county college Salling Ungdomsskole on Fælhøjvej. The sculpture is made by Misja Rasmussen, and Aakjær is facing the place where the dairy was situated. 17. Salling Girl No. 8 at Lyby Strand The unspoiled beach at Lyby offers good possibilities of bathing, surfing and sailing. The beach is approx. 15 m wide and 1 km long, and it mostly consists of sand and pebbles. The water is clean and the beach is - like the other Limfjord beaches - very child-friendly as the water deepens very slowly. Salling girl No. 8 is situated at the beach near the restaurant Lyby Strands Spisested.

3. The Museums in Skive Skive Museum and Skive Kunstmuseum (art museum) are housed in the same building dating from 1942. Among the treasures of Skive Museum is a large selection of amber beads, a fine bronze sword, Daugbjergmanden (the Daugbjerg bog find) and his fur cloak. You can also see one of Denmark’s oldest bicycles and Skive’s old fire pump. The collections at Skive art museum date from the mid1800s up to our time, among otherthings retrospective collections by painters from the Skive area and a large selection of Danish art dating from the 1900s. Admission fee.

4. The 11 Stars of Skive The 11 stars of Skive are the common name for the sculptures which have adorned the roundabouts of Skive since 2006, and thus have welcomed the visitors. Together with the 8 Salling girls, the 11 stars make it legitimate to call the surroundings of Skive Denmark’s largest outdoor art gallery. It is Denmark’s world-known design offi ce Jacob Jensen Design that has created the sculptures in the roundabouts. All the works have the ball or the cube as the basic form and they show the contrasts of black and silver – precisely as in so many other works by Jacob Jensen.

Each sculpture has its own name and its own history, and the common theme is “opposites”. The 8 Salling girls and the 11 stars are supplemented by 57 different works of art in the town centre of Skive making a stroll through the streets an artistic experience. 5. Salling Girl No. 2 at Virksund Yachting Harbour The Virksund dam was built in 1966, and in 1974 the yachting harbour was added. On the east side of the dam, on a ridge almost by the sea, you will find two grave mounds which have always served as a landfall for the ships in Lovns Bredning

and in Hjarbæk Fjord. Even in decent brochures they are always called “Maren’s Tits”. The grave mounds have not been excavated, but they are probably from the Bronze Age. In Virksund, Salling Girl No. 2 is situated at the yachting harbour. 6. Tanghuset (Seaweed House) From the Virksund Dam, you can see the old seaweed house on the salt meadow south of the road Skivevej. The seaweed house collapsed during the storm in January 2005 and has since been rebuilt. Now it offers primitive accommodation for passers-by (bikers, hikers and small-boat sailors etc.).

14. Salling Girl No. 6 at Sundsøre On the eastern-most point of Salling, you will find Sundsøre Yachting Harbour which lies next to the Hvalpsund Sundsøre ferry berth. Here, Salling girl No. 6 is situated in the small and cosy harbour. There has been a ferry service between Sundsøre in Salling and Hvalpsund in Himmerland for centuries, but it was revolutionary when it became possible to put on the railway ferry “Hvalpsund” in 1927. A warehouse was built in Sundsøre, and it still exists; thanks to persistent local efforts, it has been renovated, and it now contains a small exhibition about the ferry service in this part of the Limfjord.

society, and they deliver a total of 85 million kg organic milk. Each day the dairy receives 220,000 litres milk which is manufactured into organic dairy products, butter and cheese which are sold in all of Denmark.

15. Thise Dairy In 1988, seven farmers with visions and dreams founded the organic dairy Thise Mejeri in the old dairy buildings from 1887. In 1988, organic milk, butter and cheese products were completely new on the market, and the initiative was directly contrary to the general development: Around 1900, there were approximately 1,500 co-operative dairies in Denmark, but in the course of the 20th century the structural adjustments forced one dairy after another to close down. However, the old Thise Mejeri was privately owned, and this was perhaps the reason why the seven farmers and P.E. Pedersen started working together. Today Thise Mejeri is owned by 87 members of a co-operative

13. Salling Girl No. 5 on the Island of Fur In spite of its mere 22 km2, the Limfjord island Fur offers a large number of manmade and natural sights. If you wish to be certain that you visit all the sights of the island, it is a good idea to follow the footpaths which measure 12 km in total, starting at Emmelsstenshus on the north side of the island. The Salling girl is situated on Fur near the church Fur Kirke. On the island of Fur, the 53-55 million year old moler is visible in a layer of approx. 60 metres. It is used commercially for gravel for cat litter and isolating bricks. The moler is actually old sea floor, which was created by diatoms and clay, deposited on deep waters together with layers of volca-

nicash. The moler is famous for its fine fossils, which tell about the animal life of the past. Among these fossils, it is especially the birds which have attracted international attention. Fur is the only place in the world where almost complete bird fossils can be found intact in the moler. Today, we know of 30 different birds from the moler, including the world’s oldest parrot. Apart from birds, there are fish, insects, reptiles and lots of plants. In Fur Museum you can see the Åsted whale and a large exhibition about the creation of the moler and the fossils found in the moler. The coastline with moler is an international geosite, and it is a candidate to be entered on UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites. The ferry sails from Branden to Fur every 15 minutes. Apart from the scenery on Fur and Fur Museum, you should visit the brewery Fur Bryghus, the weaving workshop Duddines Vævestue, and the farm shop FurØ Gårdbutik that sells meat products from the farm’s Hereford cattle and lambs, as well as yarns and clothes made from its own sheep. Around the year 1990, it was discovered that the moler on Fur could be used for the absorption of fluids – for instance in gravel for cat litter – and for insulation, and in 1919 Fur Moler Kompagni started the first excavations of moler. In 1928, Færker Molerkompagni was founded, and in 1942 it was taken over by Dansk Moler Industri A/S.

Together with the fishing industry, the seaweed production constituted a considerable source of income for the local population. 7. The Transformer Substation in Hald In the vicinity of the village Hald, there is an old transformer substation which has now been converted into a treasure which the passers-by are welcome to visit. The door is always open. 8. Staarup Manor Staarup Hovedgaard is the only privately owned manor in the Limfjord Land which is open to the public. The preserved main building was erected in 1554 on top of the

old cellars, dating from 1364. After the house had been uninhabited for about 20 years, the manor was in a state of deep decay in the 1980s, but Lis Messmann and her late hus-band Jørgen Kaasfeldt Bram carried out an extensive renovation from top to bottom. Thus, Staarup Hovedgaard now appears as a monumental building, which at the same time is a beautiful privately owned manor with unique interiors. Open weekends against admission fee. In the gatehouse wing TV antiques expert Lis Messmann has established one of Denmark’s largest antique stores with furniture, artefacts, paintings, old watches, porcelain, glassware, silver articles, etc.

9. Dalsgaard Antiques Dalsgaard is an old farm at Skive Fjord mentioned for the first time in the archives in 1353. Today, the main building has been converted into an antiquity shop, and in the farm buildings there is, among other things, a café. 10. Salling Girl No. 3 at Gyldendal Harbour Gyldendal Harbour was built in 1986, and there are approx. 90 registered boats and lots of space for guest yachtsmen. The Salling girl is situated here at the yachting harbour.

11. The Medieval Castle Spøttrup Borg The castle Spøttrup is mentioned for the first time in 1404. The castle was built in approx. 1500, and today it is Denmark’s best preserved castle from the Middle Ages. The outline of the castle is preserved with a quadratic castle yard surrounded by two moats divided by a 9 metrehigh rampart. After the reformation in 1536, the King acquired the castle, and in 1579 the castle was given to Henrik Below who rebuilt it into a modern manor. The castle was inhabited until 1937 at which time it was taken over by the state. After a thorough renovation it was turned into a castle museum. Admission fee.

12. Salling Girl No. 4 at Glyngøre Fishing and Yachting Harbour Glyngøre Yachting Harbour is beautifully situated near Sallingsund together with the fishing harbour where mussels, oysters, and various fish are landed. Beside the yachting harbour, there is a lovely Blue Flag beach. Salling girl No. 4 is situated at the Yachting Harbour. The construction of the railway line from Skive to Glyngøre in 1884 was very important, especially for the fishing industry at the Limfjord. The harbour and the railway line made it possible to land and quickly transport the fish, and therefore the town became attractive for the fishermen. Development was speeded up when the family Priess founded the fishing company Glyngøre Fiskekonserves in 1900. Before the 2nd World War, Glyngøre harbour was the largest fishing harbour in the Limfjord, and apart from Priess & Co. the fishing company Glyngøre Fiskeindustri was started by a son in the Priess family. Today, the Priess family is no longer involved in any of the companies. Priess & Co. moved to a new factory in the industry district in the 1980s, and today the company is named Royal Greenland. The last time the passenger train ran between Skive and Glyngøre was in 1971, the ferry between Glyngøre and Nykøbing Mors sailed for the last time in 1977, and when the bridge Sallingsundbroen opened in 1978 the car ferries between Pinen and Plagen were

closed down. The museum Sallingsund og Omegns Museum is located in the old railway station from 1884 in Glyngøre, and naturally there is an exhibition about the Salling Railway Line. Apart from exhibitions about net making and fishing, there is a fine collection of photo cameras.
