ART COLORING CLASSES Come have some fun! Mondays at 9:30 am to 11:30 am It might seem crazy that something as simple as a coloring book could actually be beneficial, but research continually supports this idea. In fact, researchers have known for over 100 years that the benefits of coloring on the adult brain relieves stress, helps with focus and creativity, promotes social time, and can be an alternative to meditation.

The Art Class has been split into two groups: Painting and Adult Coloring. Laraine Hatch will be on hand to provide any instructions you are seeking. You will need to provide your own coloring book and colored pencils, or felt tip markers (your choice) for this class. The Adult coloring books are the latest craze, and can be found all around town, from the Dollar Tree to Walmart, Joann’s, and Fred Myer. Walmart is selling the Adult coloring books for $5.00, and a set of 36 colored pencils for $3.00. So for less than $10.00, you can enjoy socializing while relaxing at the same time! Some of these adult coloring books could last up to a year or more, and they are usually printed on card stock paper ,which can easily be framed.

Many of you know and love Dorothy as much as I do, but let’s see if you know some of the details of her life. I bet you don’t! Dorothy was born in 1937 in Spokane, Washington. She lost her parents early in life, and was in a coma at age five for six weeks. So it is easy to see that she is a real blessing to all of us, and we are so privileged that she is part of our little community. Raised by her Aunt and Uncle, she was introduced to the Grange at 14 years of age, and she became a member. She has progressed through all levels of increasing responsibility within the Grange. She also has served as Master of the Portenuf Grange for 12 years. Earlier this year, Dorothy handed over the responsibilities of Master to Lenore Petersen, also a long time Grange member. When Dorothy was 19 years old, she fell in love with her husband, Kenneth, and they married shortly after that. Kenneth passed away in 1985, but together they had two boys, and now Dorothy has five grandchildren. While raising the boys, Dorothy worked for the State of Oregon. She came to work at the Senior Activity Center in 2005 through “Experience Works.” Initially she was hired on as an administrative assistant, and later moved into the Assistant Manager position. Her knowledge and skills have benefitted several of the center’s previous managers. We love you, Dorothy!

I was born in 1956 in the mountains of Oregon right alongside the Klamath River, in a tiny little town named Oakridge. Later my family moved to Washington state where I stayed until after graduating from high school. I have four sisters and one brother. I have one son, and one brand new granddaughter. I came to live in Pocatello in January 2015 and it was late April 2015 that I came to work at the Senior Activity Center. I began here through “Experience Works” and worked as an administrative assistant for about eight months, then moved into the Editor position as a permanent employee. Goodness! How short ‘permanent’ can be! My first granddaughter was just born on June 11, 2016 and her arrival has changed all my plans! At the end of September I will be returning to Reno, NV where I can live closer to my own son and now his new daughter. I remember how dear my own grandmother was to me, and now I wish to pass that along to my granddaughter. Since, I have been here at the Senior Activity Center, I have come to know and love many of you, and I know I will miss you, and shall carry many joyous memories of you in my heart. Thank you all for your support, friendship, laughter, tears, and good company! You all embraced me from the start and made me feel as if I had found my home. Thank you, I love you all.

FROM THE NATIONAL COUNCIL ON AGING

Financial scams targeting seniors have become so prevalent that they’re now considered “the crime of the 21st century.” Why? Because seniors are thought to have a significant amount of money sitting their accounts.

Joyce Neary Kay Obray Cleo Lewis Irene Lewis Robert McKee Cal Mercer Edna Myers Mary Pond Garold Priest Susie Priest Bill Rash Richard Raynor Ilaria Rodriguez Jerry Schall Butch Shepard Ilene Smith Sandra Snyder Mary Steiner Doris (Dot) Thompson Bill Wall Lucile Webber Betty Wellard Scot Young Fabian Ivanoff Colleen Smith Leland MorrisonMarie Mercer Marion Evans John Grahl Arthur Hayes Martha (Paula) Hawkins Brenda Martin Beth Smith Josephine Schorsch

Financial scams also often go unreported or can be difficult to prosecute, so they’re considered “low risk” crime. However, they’re devastating to many older adults and leave them in a very vulnerable position, with little time to recoup their losses. It’s not just wealthy seniors who are targeted. Low-income, older adults are also at risk of financial abuse. And it’s not always strangers who perpetuate these crimes. Over 90% of all reported elder abuse is committed by an older person’s own family members. Most often their adult children, followed by grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and others. - - - Fraudulent anti-aging products- - - In a society bombarded with images of the young and beautiful, it’s not surprising that some older people feel the need to conceal their age in order to participate more fully in social circles and the workplace. After all, 60 is the new 40, right? It is in this spirit that many older Americans seek out new treatments and medications to maintain a youthful appearance, putting them at risk of scammers. Whether it’s fake Botox, like the one in Arizona that netted it’s distributors (who were convicted and jailed in 2006) $1.5 million in barely a year, or completely bogus homeopathic remedies that do absolutely nothing, there is money in the anti-aging business. Botox’s root ingredient, botulism neurotoxin is one of the most toxic substances known to science. A bad batch can have health consequences far beyond wrinkles or drooping neck muscles. Page 9
