Pastor’s Corner A Purpose and a Desny Connued
… As we think about when we will meet God, whether at the me of our own passing or in the final judgment, we can also take comfort in the words of Basil Hume, Benedicne monk and CardinalͲArchbishop of Westminster, who is remembered as a wise, faithful and compassionate pastor:
“A priest started his homily at a funeral by saying, ‘I am going to preach about judgment.’ There was dismay in the congregaon. But he went on: ‘Judgment is whispering into the ear of a merciful and compassionate God the story of my life which I had never been able to tell.’ It is a very great encouragement to think of being in the presence of God who is both merciful and full of compassion, because God knows me through and through and understands me far be+er than I could ever know and understand myself, or anyone else. Only he can truly make sense of my confused and rambling story…”
The me will come for each of us to appear before our God to render an account of our lives. It will not be a frightening moment, unless to the bi+er end we have turned away from him or consciously ignored him. Instead it will be a moment of deliverance and peace when we can whisper into his merciful and compassionate ear the story of all our years and be forgiven and made whole.

Pr, F mai & Pi Ent Religious Education Love Endures All Things
This means that love bears every trial with a posive a9tude. It stands firm in hosle surroundings. This ‘endurance’ involves not only the ability to tolerate certain aggravaons, but something greater: a constant readiness to confront any challenge. It is a love that never gives up, even in the darkest hour. It shows a certain dogged heroism, a power to resist every negave current, an irrepressible commitment to goodness. Here I think of the words of Marn Luther King, who met every kind of trial and tribulaon with fraternal love: ‘The person who hates you most has some good in him; even the naon that hates you most has some good in it; even the race that hates you most has some good in it. And when you come to the point that you look in the face of every man and see deep down within him what religion calls ‘the image of God,’ you begin to love him in spite of (everything). No ma+er what he does, you see God’s image there. There is an element of goodness that he can never sluff off…...Another way that you love your enemy is this: when the opportunity presents itself for you to defeat your enemy, that is the me which you must not do it…...When you rise to the level of love, of its great beauty and power, you seek only to defeat evil systems. (Taken from Pope Francis’ The Joy of Love) Upcoming Dates: November 27: No classes: Happy Thanksgiving! December 4 & 11: Sunday School for all grades. December 25, January 1: No classes: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Please contact Megan Evere$, megan.evere @popcatholic.org, for more informa&on or ques&ons.
Nearly 100 children who are preparing for First Eucharist in May 2017, along with their parents, enjoyed a Sunday a6ernoon retreat at POP. Hispanic children prepare for their First Eucharist in a separate twoͲyear program that acknowledges their cultural heritage and customs. EightyͲfive students in that program will also receive First Eucharist in May, bringing the total to about 200 students!
Six priests were present to hear the children’s First Reconciliaon: Fr. John Fallon, Fr. Gerald Holloway, Fr. José Guevara, Fr. Jerry Deasy, Fr. Ray Dunmyer, and Msgr. Michael Sexton, V.G.. Also as part of the retreat, students decorated felt squares with symbols of the Eucharist that will be assembled into a quilt and displayed. They also worked alongside their parents to embellish a pillowcase preprinted with a “60Ͳsecond prayer” to the Trinity to help them with bedme prayer: “God, thank you for a great day; Jesus, forgive me for my sins; Holy Spirit, help me make good choices.”
The retreat was led by Megan Evere+ (Director of Formaon) and Connie Angstadt (School Principal) with muchͲappreciated assistance from parishioners Ericka Zoeblein, Tiffany Young and Kaitlyn Brown.

Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19:23-24)
Quote from Pope Francis
“To clothe the naked: what does it mean if not to restore dignity to one who has lost it? Certainly giving clothing to one who has none; but let us also think about the women vicms of trafficking, cast onto the streets, or of other many ways of using the human body as a commodity, even that of minors. Likewise, not having a job, a house, a fair wage are forms of nakedness; being discriminated against on account of race, of faith, are all forms of ‘nakedness,’ to which as Chrisans we are called to be a+enve, vigilant and ready to act.” Ͳ Pope Francis, General Audience, 10/26/16 (USCCB Dept of Jusce, Peace and Human Development) For more informa!on on the Seamless Garment, please contact Tom & Elsbeth Germanson: 205.565.3456,
