4-H Enrollment 4-H Enrollment is now open for the 2010-2011 4-H Year. One Enrollment form is enclosed in this newsletter. Contact the Extension Office for additional forms if needed. Completed enrollment forms and all fees must be received by December 1st. $15 per youth for all project areas except horse $20 per youth for members who are enrolling in the horse project Checks should be made out to 4-H Leaders Association. scholarships are available, please contact the Lake County Extension Office for more information.

Qualifying for State Fair In the past , Lake County 4-H members had little opportunity to participate at State Fair with most State Fair events overlapping with the Lake County Fair. However we have been able to find a way around this by qualifying 4-H Static Exhibits at this years County Fair for next years State Fair. Youth who qualified for the 2011 State Fair had a special sticker on their exhibit. If you qualified for State Fair and would like to send your exhibits onto State you have two options. The first option is you can bring your qualified exhibit to the Lake County Extension Office and we will store it for you. The second option allows you to enjoy your exhibit at home and bring it to the Extension Office by July 15th next summer. The Lake County Extension Office will send the Exhibits to State Fair and return the members exhibits after being judged and displayed at the State Fair. Congratulations to those youth who qualified!

Backcountry Natural Resource School Field Trip Overview: The quality of life we enjoy in Lake County depends on the natural resources that surround us – rangelands, clean water, wildlife habitat, forage, open vistas, and recreational opportunities. This is a cooperative program including Lake County Watershed Councils, OSU Extension, BLM, ODF&W, Lake County Cooperative Weed Management Board, Collins Timber, ODF, and Oregon Department of Agriculture. This program is designed to integrate students into a backcountry setting where they are a part of the natural resources that are so vital to each of us. Specialists will offer a framework for linking our natural resources together. We will look at rangelands, watersheds/stream health, wildlife, recreation, forestry and weed issues. Specialists from each of these categories will bring agriculture and natural resources together. They will demonstrate how each resource compliments and depends on the other for both highly functioning rangelands for cattle use to healthy ecosystems and watersheds. This is a two day, overnight program that will include up to twenty five students. Upon arrival and organization of camp gear, students will backpack 3 miles into a previously selected backcountry site where they will learn to incorporate everyday living into the outdoors. Group leaders will transport food and the majority of the student’s camp gear to the campsite by truck. Students will learn how to use low impact techniques for camping, cooking, waste issues and water quality. They will also learn orienteering, group dynamics, and develop decision making skills. Students will depart from one of the three high school locations in Lake County, traveling to the ranch headquarters located approximately 20 miles north of Lakeview, 30 miles from Paisley, and approximately 90 miles from North Lake.
