2017 OVPDEMA Study Abroad Program to India Eligibility The course and trip are open to undergraduate IU Bloomington students of the Hudson and Holland Scholars Program (HHSP), Groups Scholars Program, IU Bloomington 21st Century Scholars Program, mentors of the Faculty and Staff for Student Excellence (FASE) Mentoring program and OVPDEMA funded tutors of the Academic Support Center (ASC). Students must be at least 18 years old. Students who participated in the OVPDEMA-sponsored study abroad program (India, Ghana and Dominican Republic) in the past are not eligible. Selection preferences are given to those who have no previous study abroad experience. Minimum GPA requirement for this program is 2.7 (IU CUM). Course Overview The Introduction to India: Social Justice & Responsibility (INST-I100) is a three-credit Summer 1 course that has both oncampus and overseas components. The students will gain in-depth and experiential knowledge of India’s history, contemporary social structure and cultures, and its recent experiences of social justice, NGO-based development, corporate responsibility and its relation to both urban and rural environmental issues. This course applies to the World Language and Culture (W/C) requirements. Students will attend the mandatory pre-travel classes during the second eight weeks of Spring 2017 semester on the following Fridays: March 24, 31, April 7, 14, 21, and 28. Travel The study tour will take place from May 13 – 27, 2017. While in India, students will visit local academic and government institutions, NGOs, cultural sites and local communities. The travel component of the trip can be physically intense and students should be prepared for long days in extremely hot climate. Students will submit their last assignment after returning from the travel. Program Cost The cost of the course per student is $1,200, which includes the three credits, roundtrip airfare, lodging accommodations, meals, entrance and lecture fees, visa and travel insurance. Students are advised to budget around $300-400 for a spending money while in India. Beyond these costs, students are responsible for getting their passports if they do not currently have one, any immunizations and/or medication and other travel-related expenses. The selected students automatically receive OVPDEMA scholarship towards the India program. Therefore, students are not eligible to apply for the summer study abroad scholarship from OVPDEMA for additional funding. Important Dates Application Opens: December 7 Information Session: January 9 Application Deadline: January 16 Individual Selection Interviews: January 23 - February 3 Selection Decision: February 10 Student Acceptance: February 17 $500 Deposit is due: February 24 (non-refundable) On-campus sessions starts: March 24 On-campus session ends: April 28 Travel: May 13-27, 2017

To Do list for Students -Complete/submit student application form -Get interviewed (select students will be invited for an interview) -Submit Notification of Acceptance to OVPDEMA -Complete all necessary forms to both for OVPDEMA and Office of Overseas Study -Pay deposit (Due February 24) -Apply for/renew passport (apply now. Passports are issued for ten years.) -Submit Indian visa materials to OVPDEMA -Apply for Hutton Honors College, Diversity Abroad and other applicable scholarships. Please note that the OVPDEMA summer study abroad scholarship cannot be used for this program. -Acquire necessary vaccinations and medication -Pay the remaining India course cost to Bursar (Due May 10) Additional Travel Expenses -$8 to $15 for two passport photos -$135 for US passport (Expedited service will cost additional $60. Apply early to avoid this cost) -$300 to $500 for vaccinations (consult your health insurance provider or IU Health Center) -$300 to $400 for spending money in India (to purchase gifts, personal items, additional or alternate meals, and tips for services) -Miscellaneous (additional luggage, insect repellant, snacks, etc.) Possible Funding Options for this Program Students are responsible for securing funds for the student portion ($1,200) for the program. Since it is a Summer 1 course, students must be registered for at least 6 credits (another class) to apply for student loans. Each interview will take about 15 minutes. The applicants will be notified of the decision within 7-10 days. Participation is contingent upon attending all pre-trip sessions, paying all required deposits and fees, and abiding by the rules/guidelines of the program. The trip itinerary, further instructions and requirements, expectations, travel list, confirmation of participation form, etc. will be shared with the selected students via course Canvas site and other communication methods for the 2017 India Program.
