Using the Washington, D.C., Metrorail Getting around on the Metrorail The Metrorail is a color-coded system of monorail transportation in the Washington, D.C., area. The Omni Shoreham Hotel is a 5-6 minute walk (.27 miles) to the Woodley Park Metro Station, which is on the Red Line. The addresses for the two entrances for this station are: • W corner of Connecticut Ave. & 24th St. NW • SW corner of Connecticut Ave. & Woodley Rd. To locate the Metro station closest to your destination, check on maintenance/service status, determine fares for a trip, or purchase a SmarTrip® fare card, visit http://www.wmata.com. Please note the Metrorail is undergoing extensive maintenance at this time so you may experience longer travel times. Some travel may require you to transfer from the Red Line to a line of a different color. Exit your current train at a “transfer station” and go to the correct platform to wait for the color train going in the direction you desire that is assigned to that platform. You do not need your card until the very end of your trip to exit at your final station. Please note: Make sure the color train you want is going in the direction you want to go. Directions are indicated by the last stop on a particular Metro line. Pay attention to the name of the Metro stop that the train is headed toward, which is on a digital sign located on the side and front of the train. For example, the Red Line travels in two directions. Each direction is indicated by one of two names. The northern route of the Red Line is toward Glenmont. The southern route of the Red Line is toward Shady Grove. Use the Metro map to determine your current location and then which direction you need to go to get to your destination.

Trip Planner Metro’s Trip Planner lets you plan routes between two destinations, allowing you to optimize your trip itinerary based on your preferences. Suggested trip itineraries also include the fare, estimated travel time, and any walking directions.

Buying Fares: What You Need to Know Consider buying a SmarTrip® card to save money. • Metrorail fares vary by time of day and the distance between stations. Use Metro’s Trip Planner to calculate the fare for your trip. • Each person needs his/her own SmarTrip® card to ride Metrorail. However, up to two children under age five may travel free with each fare-paying adult. • Groups can order SmarTrip® cards that are tailored to their needs by mail. Call Bulk Sales at (202)-962-5700 for assistance. (Note that there is no discount for bulk sales.)

Using the Washington, D.C., Metrorail Riding Metrorail and Metrobus New riders can learn about the basics of the Metro system by visiting both the Rail and Bus sections of this website. The Commuter Tips page will have you traveling like a skilled veteran in no time.

Finding the Metro Station If you’re driving, look for the large Metro signs to direct you to stations. Look for tall brown columns with a large “M” identifying the station entrances. Colored stripes around the column show which lines serve the station.

Waiting for the Train Read station signs to learn which train platform to use for your destination. Stand behind the bumpy tiles along the platform’s edge. Watch for flashing lights along the platform’s edge, which signals a train’s arrival. Station signs will also alert you to a train’s arrival.

Boarding the Train Check the destination of the train, which is posted above the side windows. Stand clear of the train car doors and let riders get off before you board. Step over the small gap between the platform and the train. Listen for the chimes that signal the car doors are closing. If the train is full, step back and wait for the next train. Unlike elevator doors, train doors do not reopen automatically.

Exiting the Train and Station Use the same farecard you used to enter the system when you exit the system.

Visitor’s Kit The Metro Visitor’s Kit is the definitive guide to helping you use Metro to get around the greater Washington, D.C., area. Among other brochures and publications providing comprehensive information, it features the Metro Pocket Guide, which provides you with the Metrorail system map, points of interest near Metrorail stations, and information on system hours, fares, and passes.

Safety and Security on Metrobus and Metrorail Visit http://www.wmata.com/getting_around/safety_security/bus_rail.cfm to see the safety and security tips and features.

Using the Washington, D.C., Metrorail Metrorail Hours and Peak Times Hours of service: Open: 5:00 AM Monday – Friday; 7:00 AM Saturday - Sunday Close: 12 midnight Sunday – Thursday; 3:00 AM Friday – Saturday Nights The weekday rush-hour periods — before 9:30 AM, and between 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM — are the most crowded. Fares are increased during these times, and are referred to as “Peak” fares. Peak Hours: Weekdays from 5:00 AM - 9:30 AM and from 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM Friday and Saturday nights from 12:00 PM - 3:00 AM Off-Peak: Off-peak fares are in effect all other times.

SmarTrip® Cards A farecard is required to enter and exit the metrorail stations. SmarTrip® is a plastic farecard that can be reloaded with value and reused. You can add value to your SmarTrip® card at SmarTrip machines in Metrorail stations. The initial card is $10, which means you are paying $2 for the card, and it will have an $8 credit for you to use for fare on the Metrorail. SmarTrip® cards are sold from dispensing machines at Metrorail stations and can be purchased online before you travel. FCCLA recommends purchasing your SmarTrip® card ahead of time to avoid lengthy processes at the Metrorail station. Visit https://smartrip.wmata.com/storefront to purchase your SmarTrip® card. We do not recommend adding additional funds to the card at the time of purchase. Wait until you have used the amount on the card. Based on the amount of additional sightseeing you will be doing, you may not need to add more money on the card. Additional funds can be added at all Metrorail stations.

15

Using the Washington, D.C., Metrorail How to Use the Metrorail Faregates Each passenger needs a farecard to enter and exit. Fares are based on when and how far you ride. Fare amounts between stations are located on station kiosks and FARECARDS & PASSES machines. The machines accept credit and debit cards. If you use cash, bring small bills; the machines only provide up to $10 in change (in coins). Step One: Enter the Station Enter the station through the faregates with the lit green and white arrows. Step Two: Locate the SmarTrip® targets SmarTrip® targets are located on the top of regular faregates and the inside of wide faregates. They are marked with the SmarTrip® logo. Step Three: Touch Card to the SmarTrip® targets Touch your card to the SmarTrip® target. When you exit the station, swipe the card again. The display will show the fare charged and remaining balance on the card.

Metrorail Rules and Manners Do • Use headphones with all audio and video devices. • Let passengers get off the train before you board. • Be courteous. Seats next to the doors are reserved for senior citizens and riders with disabilities. Please give your seat to someone who needs it more than you do. • Put trash in trash bins and newspapers in the newspaper recycling bins. • Give senior citizens and riders with disabilities priority when using the elevators. • Stand at least two feet behind the edge of the platform. Flashing lights along the platform edge announce that a train is arriving. A recorded voice and chimes warn that train doors are closing. • Follow official instructions at all times. Try to remain calm in emergencies. • Step carefully over the gap between the train door and the platform. • Report any unattended packages to a transit police officer, station manager, or train operator. Don’t • Eat, drink, smoke, or litter on Metro vehicles or in stations. Metro Transit Police issue citations or make arrests to enforce the law. • Try to block or force train doors open. They do not reopen like elevator doors. • Touch the train doors when they are opening or closing. • Lean against the train doors. • Run in the station. • Sit on the platform edge. • Walk on the trackbed. The third rail carries 750 volts of electricity. Always stay away from it even it you think the power is off. The third-rail power is usually not affected during a station power outage.

16

Don’t • Ride barefoot. • Run on the escalator. • Run down the up escalator or up the down escalator. • Sit on the steps or the handrail. • Take the escalator if you are using a stroller, wheelchair, or handcart or have a heavy load.
