Working Group Spotlights CLINICAL WORKING GROUP

The Clinical Working Group (CWG) includes those who have significant teaching and research roles. This year we are transitioning our monthly clinical calls into a Consortium Grand Rounds that includes participants from the other working groups, including Policy, Education and Research. We have talked quite a bit about working with the Educational Working Group to develop a way to electronically house information such as protocols for patient care, clinical models, handouts, etc. Amy Locke, MD, CWG Chair [email protected]

Lauray, MacElhern, CWG Vice Chair [email protected]

EDUCATION WORKING GROUP

The Education Working Group (EWG) serves as a resource for learners and teachers of integrative medicine and health. This year we plan to provide active support to the student and resident interest groups and create a solid network of education champions (ideally one per school) who will facilitate communication with, and mentorship of, learners across the country. We will collaborate with these education champions to identify, mentor and educate our learners about integrative clinical topics, professional development and self-care. Via a listserv our teachers and learners will network, disseminate helpful information and support each other. In lieu of monthly calls we will contribute speakers to Consortium Grand Rounds and communicate monthly with our EWG members helpful resources for teachers of integrative medicine and health. Delia Chiaramonte, MD, EWG Chair [email protected]

Ray Teets, MD, EWG Vice Chair [email protected]

POLICY WORKING GROUP

The Policy Working Group (PWG) is for those interested in learning about and influencing local and national health policy with respect to integrative healthcare. The PWG is focused on increasing access to care and spreading awareness of the merits of integrative medicine and health to local policymakers and healthcare administrators. The PWG is interested in making a significant impact on healthcare through policy. Our consultant, Janet Kahn, is guiding the PWG through her ties with the newly appointed Surgeon General, staff at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, integrative healthcare representatives on the AMA Committees that influence CPT coding and other reimbursement-related decisions, as well as non-profits active in this field. Samantha Simmons, MPH, PWG Chair [email protected]

Leslie Mendoza Temple, MD, PWG Vice Chair [email protected]

RESEARCH WORKING GROUP

The Research Clinical Working Group (RWG) is for those interested in the evaluation of integrative medicine and health. The RWG includes individuals who have research roles in their institutions or who are interested in keeping up on researchrelated topics including: • Hot-off-the-press study results, • Innovative study designs, • Cutting-edge technologies and untapped areas of integrative health and medicine research such as Practice-Based Research. In 2015, the monthly RWG conference calls are routinely scheduled for the 2nd Monday of every month (2pm ET/1pm CT/12pm MT/11am PT). Please note that some of the monthly calls provided in the Consortium Grand Rounds (3rd Thursday of every month at 12pm ET), includes individuals from the other working groups, including Policy, Education and Clinical. We are interested in updating the RWG database to ensure accuracy as well as your research expertise. Should we find a critical mass of RWG members with a specific interest (e.g., Pediatrics), a subgroup could be formed and spark a collaborative opportunity. 2015 Bravewell Lecture

Karen Wolk Feinstein, PhD

The Consortium’s Bravewell Lecture creates an opportunity to invite a local thought leader from the larger healthcare world to educate and inspire the membership. Dr. Feinstein is president and chief executive officer of the Jewish Healthcare Foundation (JHF) and its two supporting organizations, the Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative (PRHI) and Health Careers Futures (HCF). Appointed the Foundation’s first president, Dr. Feinstein has made JHF and PRHI a leading voice in patient safety, healthcare quality and workforce issues. When Dr. Feinstein founded PRHI, it was among the nation’s first regional multi-stakeholder quality coalitions devoted simultaneously to advancing efficiency, best practices and safety in health care through the use of industrial engineering principles. Dr. Feinstein also founded Health Careers Futures to assist the region’s healthcare industry in attracting, preparing and retaining employees. She also was a leader in the formation of the Network for Regional Healthcare Improvement (NRHI), a national coalition of Regional Health Improvement Collaboratives that supports national policy efforts to improve healthcare quality and value. Dr. Feinstein is widely regarded as a national leader in healthcare quality improvement and often presents at national and international conferences. She is the author of numerous regional and national publications on quality and safety; she was the editor of the Urban & Social Change Review, and she is the editor of the book Moving Beyond Repair: Perfecting Health Care. Additionally, she has served on the faculties of Boston College and Carnegie Mellon University, and taught at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Feinstein has previously held executive posts at other nonprofits, including the United Way, and is a past president of Grantmakers In Health. She serves on a number of nonprofit and for-profit boards, including NRHI; the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, United Way of Allegheny County, Allegheny County Parks Foundation, and Institute of Politics. She is also the co-chair of the board of directors for the Pennsylvania Health Funders Collaborative. Dr. Feinstein earned her bachelor’s degree at Brown University, her master’s degree at Boston College and her doctorate at Brandeis University.

2015 Bravewell Distinguished Service Award Recipient

James E. Dalen, MD, MPH

The Consortium’s Bravewell Distinguished Service Award honors one of our members for their tireless contribution to the Consortium’s mission. Dr. Dalen has been a member of the University of Arizona faculty since 1988. He served as Dean of the College of Medicine from 1988 to 2001, and Vice President for Health Sciences from 1995 to 2001. During his tenure as Dean and Vice President, the University of Arizona of the College of Public Health, The Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine and the Arizona Telemedicine Program were established. Currently he is Dean Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Public Health, and teaches in the colleges of Medicine and Public Health. In addition, he is Executive Director of the Weil Foundation which supports education in Integrative Medicine. A graduate of Washington State University and the University of Michigan, where he received a master’s degree in psychology, he received his MD at the University of Washington. He subsequently received a MPH from Harvard. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Boston City Hospital and the New England Medical Center. Since the days of The Consortium’s founding, Dr. James Dalen has been a steadfast supporter of our organization and its mission. Dr. Dalen was one of the early group of Deans who recognized and supported the need for an organization to promote integrative medicine in the academic environment. He participated regularly in our annual meetings for many years as Dean at University of Arizona, and has remained involved as one of our Senior Advisors. Dr. Dalen’s advice and input have been invaluable in many of the organizational decisions the Consortium has made over the past decade. As Executive Director of the Weil Foundation, Dr. Dalen has consistently supported the Consortium’s mission by providing funding and support for the LEAPS into IM program. His support has enabled this program to thrive and grow into one of the Consortium’s signature programs, providing education and support for the future leaders in the field. We would not be the thriving organization we are today without the benefit of Dr. Dalen’s wisdom, commitment, and support.
