CAPTAIN’S NOTE

CLUB NEWS

Let’s put our house in order A word of appreciation to all the members for the confidence placed in me to continue my contribution to the club as the Captain. I pledge to make changes only for the better and always in the interest of the club and members at large. Thank you one and all. We call ourselves a premier club of upstanding members. We pride ourselves on being the country’s most prestigious club. We proclaim our course as the best ‘cow grass’ course in the country, but we cannot keep our own house clean. Time and again I have stressed the importance of cleanliness on the course. It sickens the non-smokers to see cigarette butts all over the course, tee boxes, fairways, bunkers and greensides, and even on our roads. Don’t pride yourself as being upstanding members if you cannot behave civilly. I am sure you do not throw rubbish or cigarette butts in your own house or compound. I do not think you even throw any rubbish out of your house except in your rubbish bins. Why then, do it in the club? Treat this club as your house away from home. Keep all your golfing rubbish for the bins provided on every hole. This is an appeal, failing which, disciplinary action will be taken against the culprits, or the Management Committee may change the rules to totally ban smoking on the course as some other clubs have done. Signs have been placed on all tee boxes, so be forewarned. Another agenda that needs mentioning is the club facilities. The golf course is open daily from first light but not before 6.45 am on the Kelana and 7.00 a.m. on the Putra Course. Members have been seen hitting their balls in the dark before opening times. It is against club rules and should anything happen in the dark, then what? The swimming pool is open from 7.00 am to 9.00 pm daily but some members have been seen swimming in the dark too. No lifeguards are on duty when the pool is closed. Who will be held responsible if something happens? Rules are made for the club and for the good of members. Members who flout the rules should be brought to book. Back on the golf course, divots and pitch marks are aplenty. Golfers who chose to use buggies have been observed to be the worst culprits for not filling in divots. If you think it is beneath your dignity and position to carry a pail of sand onto the course my advice to you is to please use the caddy service available. If you are so dignified, then you must be able to afford the caddy service. To be reprimanded by the marshal or committee members would be a bigger embarrassment that may lead to your suspension.

Golf is a perfect sport as it encompasses all physical and mental aspects. It is also a builder of character as it is guided by etiquette. There had been too many complaints of slow play, especially in the morning. When you know you are slow, please allow the flight behind to play through. If you are too fast, please understand the flight in front may be a little older and slower. If you do not have the ability to play from the blue tee because of your lack of distance, please tee off from the white. There are so many things you can consider to make a golf game more enjoyable instead of getting into quarrels and arguments by shouting and showing your annoyance. This is why in the R&A Rules of Golf, there is a section on Golf Etiquette. For those who have grouses regarding slow play and otherwise, please go back and read through this section. Our club is a membership club and we pride ourselves on being not only a golf club but also a family club where family members are given the privilege of using all the facilities. Over the years these privileges have been taken for granted and thought to be a right. KGNS is very generous and allows many kinds of privileged members. However, members must bear in mind that the privileges that have been granted can be withdrawn. Members who flaunt the rules of the club may have their privileges withdrawn and be accorded PNG by the club. Therefore, members are urged to brief their privileged members on the rules of the club. On the social side, the management plans to create activities to strengthen the multiracial unity that has always existed in this club. Multicultural and social events that are non-sensitive racially and ethnically will be held from time-to-time. Members are urged to attend to showcase to the nation how co-existence begins at home in our club. Happy Clubbing! Dr. Ronnie Yeo Club Captain

Fairway

Fairway Hole #5,

Distance Markers

Putra Course Members know the fairway on Hole #5 is always soggy during heavy rain and, very hard during the dry season. These two problems are also no good for the fairway grass health, which leads to a shallow root system and poor density. The C&G Sub-Committee discussed this problem many times and came to a conclusion that the problems occur due to the addition of clay and mud during pond construction. In order to solve the poor soil condition, C&G has suggested changing the soil profile by hollow tining the fairway and top dressing with sand. This practice will be done three or four times a year using 4 to 6-inch tines. The hollow in the soil will be

replaced by sand, which in the future will improve the soil profile. At the same time the application of fertilisers will increase the fertility of the soil to provide an overall better playing surface. The transformation will take time but the problem will be solved.

Fairway Distance Markers are poles on both sides, of the fairway, to indicate the distance from the fairway to the centre of the green. At KGNS, the poles are green with yellow rings. Three (3) rings means 200m to the green, two (2) rings 150m and one (1) ring 100m to the centre of the green. (Please refer to the pictures below). Recently, our Captain, Dr. Ronnie Yeo and Mr Ragu Ramalingam took it upon themselves to re-measure the distance from the tee box permanent distance markers to the fairway markers and to the centre of the green. The idea of the new ground attached distance marker is to provide additional distance information to the golfer. The introduction of the new fairway distance markers, placed in the ground beside the sprinkler heads, informs players of their distance from the green. (Refer to the pictures on the left). You can see three (3) readings marked by blue, white and red. When you stand beside the marker, the blue number will tell you your distance to the back of the green, white to the centre of the green and red to the front of the green. For example, if blue is marked 150, white as 120 and red as 90, it means you are 150m to the back of the green, 120m from the centre of the green and 90m from the front of the green. Three new distant markers should assist you to choose the right club for your desired distance and play like a professional. Good luck and enjoy your golf round. Similar measurements and actions are planned for the Kelana Course once the work on Putra Course is completed.

Smoking Golfers Keep the courses clean. Please avoid littering and remember to bring along a container to dispose off your cigarette butts. KGNS would like to thank Red Bull for their generous contribution of the Cigarrette Butt Disposal Containers.

TRAVEL

GOLF IN KUNMING and

LIJIANG,CHINA by KGNS Captain Dr Ronnie Yeo

W

ith hype from seasoned travelers, I was told of the wonderful golf that exists in Kunming. Many had played the famous Spring City golf courses and had nothing but praise for them. There was also the Stone Forest Golf Club that is a must for all golfers who love to travel. I left it to my friends and a travel agent to make all arrangements, including flight and golf plus tours, and headed for China. We flew by MAS to Kunming on 29 June 2011. After a short flight of 3 hours and 30 minutes we landed at Kunming Airport, which is situated right in the middle of the city of four million. It was afternoon and after a rest in our 3-star hotel, where the air-conditioning was not working well, we took in a bit of the city. It was buildings, streets and people doing nothing extraordinary. By late evening it was time to look for food. With a group of seven, of which five were Muslims, we found a Halal restaurant. Surprisingly, there were many around and the food served was of good quality and quantity. A note of warning: the Muslim restaurants served almost the same kind of food with very little variation. Golf the next day was played on a course outside Kunming. A journey that was supposed to take about 45 minutes took double the time. The main road to the course was perfect but the approach road to the venue, called Meadows Golf Club, was in horrific condition. We got a free massage, as we were tossed around in the bus. To make it worse, we were held up for 45 minutes as we passed through a small village where a truck broke down on a one lane dirt road. As we approached the club it was difficult to make out where the clubhouse was. It was nothing more than a shed with a small changing room and a canteen. Buggies were available and they were compulsory. The Meadows Golf Club is a links course over rolling hills and lakes and it was a beautiful sight to behold. The fairways were neat and well kept but anything beyond the fairways was lost ball territory. It was a par-72 course and if it was not for the journey, I would recommend this course to all golfers. I imagined I was playing on a links course in the United Kingdom, with the wind up and the course long and scenic. The trip back was less tiring and filled with a little more excitement. Local villagers sold seasonal fruits on the road sides and we had our first taste of lychees, peaches and plums. That night we went to the local shopping centre to visit the street vendors who sold everything short of the clothes on their bodies. Bargaining was fierce and reductions were in the range of 60 to 80 percent. With our tired limbs, we finally trooped into a massage centre to get our old bones cracked and our worn out muscles rejuvenated. Our big golf game happened the next day at the Spring City Golf Club. It was an hour’s drive away in the direction of Stone Forest that is a World Heritage site. Of the two courses at Spring City, we chose to play the Lake Course, that being the easier. It was a masterpiece of scenery. Situated right next to the lake, the course offered wonderful views from all angles. There were times when we were at lake level and times when we were a few hundred feet above the lake. It was my kind of paradise for photography. The 18

layout was good and its the length varied from the different colored tee boxes. The fairways were immaculate and the greens very challenging. Thanks to the optical illusion slopes was very much in play and most of us were tricked more than one. The caddy’s assistance was definitely needed. The signature hole on the course is the par-3 150 yard downhill hole towards the lake. It looked long and scary from the top tee box, yet played only to a 9-iron or pitching wedge. Golf at Spring City is any golfer’s dream. You can check into the accommodation there and book for two rounds, which gives you in a complimentary round. The only snag is that you will have to eat there and miss all the entertainment of the city. We visited the Tea Institute of the local university where we were all treated to some very nice Chinese teas. Some of us bought Pu-Er tea for friends and family. On the fourth day we took a 45-minute local flight to Lijiang City. The journey from the airport into the city, a distance of 24 kilometers, took us three hours including the wait at the airport for our transport to arrive. The cause was that part of the road to the airport from the city was being converted into a highway.

However, the Ancient City of Lijiang is the main attraction in this city. We spent the afternoon wandering around the World Heritage site of Lijiang Ancient City taking in the narrow cobbled streets with crystal clear streams lined by traditional ancient styled Chinese architecture. Restaurants and souvenir shops dominated. Sunset over the curved rooftops that had red lanterns dangling from them made an absolutely stunning scene. Golf at Lijiang must be played at the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Golf Club. It was a 45-minutes drive to the club, which is situated in a protected zone. Located about 3,000 meters up the mountain, the air is thinner and the temperature much cooler, both of which are very conducive for golf. The scenery was truly marvelous! From all holes, one was sure to see Jade Dragon Mountain which is snow-capped all year round. We were unfortunate to miss the snow peaks as they were covered by dense clouds. Again, the golf was fantastic. One peculiar thing noted was the number of baby frogs on the greens that would jump out of the way when you attempted to clear debris from your line of putt. The fairways and the greens were very well maintained, and the caddies were all rosy cheeked residents of the local mountainous areas. Playing at that altitude, it was no wonder some of the smokers in our group were panting as buggies were not allowed on the fairways. The Lijiang Ancient City by night was a colorful experience with all the buildings lighted and lanterns everywhere. The lights reflected in the lakes and streams making the scenery even more exhilarating.

The second Ancient Town in Lijiang was even more beautiful and picturesque. Situated outside Lijiang, it was quainter with fewer tourists. There were Muslim eateries available and we had, for the first time in our lives, sashimi trout with wasabi sauce. The fish came live from the streams that flow around the Ancient Town. We flew back to Kunming the next day and stayed at a 4-star hotel in another part of the city. As mentioned the city of Kunming had very little to offer except for the shopping centre and the massage. On our second last day, we considered playing the Mountain Course at Spring City Golf Resort, but the difference in price put us off. We settled for playing our last golf game in Wanda Golf Club, which was just outside the city. This course is built within a housing compound and was therefore shorter. However, it was not lacking in difficulties in the form of doglegged holes, numerous ponds and undulating greens. In fact we lost more balls here than at all the other courses put together. The course is ordinary but the way it was maintained, deserved much credit. Everything was immaculate and for a Chinese golf club, I must say I was impressed with the cleanliness. After golf, which ended in the early afternoon, some of us proceeded to visit the famed Stone Forest, which was declared a World Heritage site some years ago. The entire area covered a few thousand acres of limestone rocks sticking out of the ground. Imaginative minds could make those stones into images of anything. It was an impressive and worthwhile visit but a buggy ride, at a price, is advised especially after golf. The next day our journey home was almost missed due to one of our members getting lost in Kunming doing his last minute shopping. If you do not speak the language do carry the name card of your hotel to show to taxi drivers. There is no signage in English and the only way out is to show them a name card. If there are English notices, you will get a laugh out of them as most of the time you will not be able to make out what they are trying to say. The trip took us eight days, from home to home, and the entire cost was just over RM4,000 each excluding food. Eating in China is really inexpensive and Halal food is available everywhere. If you are looking for a mixture of golf, history, scenery and shopping, Kunming and Lijiang is a good trip worth your money. Berita Subang

THE SINGAPORE INTERCLUB GAMES

8th and 9th July 2011

The issue of bus and accommodation arrangement for the two interclub matches against our Reciprocal Clubs of Warren and Keppel Golf Clubs was raised in the AGM. Accordingly, no arrangements were made for the simple reason that Singapore is only a neighbouring country and many of our members have relatives and friends residing there. Moreover, most of those who signed up preferred to stay on their own. As such, making arrangements for those in need would have been for only a small number. In the end, it was decided that the club would subsidise RM100 for all the principal members and this turned out well for most. The realisation eventually had 52 travelled to Singapore by various means. Friday, the day before the official interclub match, most of us landed in Raffles Country Club (RCC) just after the Second Link. This is a recently signed reciprocal club of KGNS and it was just unbelievable, how they welcomed our members. Prior arrangements were made for some 8 MC members and friends to play on two flights. By lunch time, about 20 of our members turned up. The President and Captain of the club were on deck to welcome everyone. Food was prepared and flights were arranged. It was embarrassing but RCC members made us feel at home by catering to our every needs, not just the two official flights. Everybody had lunch and it was no simple lunch. Tee offs were followed and some of RCC members even went out of their way to accompany and playing with us. When golf was over, the free flow of drinks including beer and whiskey continued. Dinner was also served with the unexpected hospitality. Entertainment continued into the night and members from our reciprocal Jurong Country Club were also summoned. Those of us

who stayed managed to return to our accommodations only in the wee hours of the morning. On Saturday 9th July 2011, we assembled at Warren Golf & Country Club by 11.00 am ready for lunch. But our Keppel hosts had everything arranged for us, from lunch to changing rooms to golf and buggies. The format of play for the day was according to their club captain “ENJOY.” The results in the end did not count and everybody was the winner. Our members had a good outing on the Warren course and the fairways were good and greens speedy. Best of all, buggies were allowed on the course. Liquor of all kinds was free flowing. Warren Captain Steve Poh was masterly on his course, and together with his committee member Mr. Oh KB, came in second best on their side. KGNS Captain Dr. Ronnie Yeo, however rode on Donovan Reeves to come in third for our team. The reception from Warren Golf & Country Club was warmth and very friendly. For a club that became reciprocal just last year they have done very well. On Sunday, 10th July 2011, Keppel Golf Club played host to us for our annual interclub game. By 6.45 a.m. most of our players were in the club having a sumptuous breakfast. Keppel Golf Club is old friend and most of us were familiar with the course, but few of us know its entire clubhouse sits impressively at the side of the harbor with a view of the sea and the coastal skyline of Singapore. We had single barrel start which caused some delay. However, the introduction of our member teaming up with their member and playing as a team against another, similarly formed team is a novel way of establishing friendship. There were no overall results and BBSS (best ball stableford score) determined the prize winners. The Course? It’s called the STC, not Singapore Transport Corporation but SINGAPORE TORTURE CHAMBER. The course after renovation is still very hilly and one must be a hiker as well as a good golfer to play golf there. It is a very challenging layout that requires knowledge and planning to play well.

Buggies were not allowed on the course and most of us had to walk up and down to reach the ball from the buggy tracks. The greens were unforgiving and local knowledge was definitely needed. Is that why they paired us with their members? Whilst all were winners, Captain John Tan of Warren emerged champion. His nickname Little John, is little credit to him unless you liken him with Little John of Robin Hood. Our Captain had to rely on a lady partner and was being carried by her all the way and ended up way down the list. Lunch was served on the breezy Terrace overlooking the harbor. It was another good gathering for the hospitality from Keppel matched in every way that of Warren. After lunch, some of our members made their way home to KL. Those who stayed back for another day kept the drinking party going. On Monday 11th July 2011, about five flights of our members revisited Raffles Golf & Country Club for another outing on their second course. Breakfast was waiting for them on their arrival. RCC President, Captain and other committee members and members were on hand to greet everyone and join our members in their game on the Lake Course. Obviously, the hospitality was out of expectation considering this was not an official visit but the way they went about treating us was just out of this world. The Lake Course was easier to play except for one of our members who draws hibiscus flowers on his balls and sent about a dozen balls into the water all over the course. The joke of the day was, soon Raffles G&C Club will have hibiscus plants coming out of their ponds. Anyone going there next please report if that is true! Overall, the Singapore interclub trip was a huge success despite the earlier problem of transport and accomodation. s Hospitality-wise, when you receive the unexpected, it always leaves a good feeling. KGNS members, please take note of how guests should be treated when they visit our club.

Golf Club

On 22 July, our KGNS team of 55 men and 14 lady members left for Indonesia, to compete in the interclub match with Jakarta Golf Club. Soon after arrival, 2 buses took us to Bumi Serpong Golf Club where 67 of us played an 18-hole round of golf. The next day we began early by playing at Bukit Sentul Golf Club. After completing 18 holes we decided to have lunch at the clubhouse before heading back to the hotel. We began our day at an early 5.30 a.m. on 24 July for our morning tee time at Jakarta Golf Club. The game started at 7.15 a.m and ended at 1.00 p.m. For lunch, we were served a variety of local delicacies. The mode of play was individual strokeplay for both man and woman, where the 15 best scores were used to determine the overall team winner. We won two prizes for the individual men’s division. Shaiful Kamar emerged second place and the best nett for the men’s went to Syed Zafilen. In the overall team event we lost to Jakarta Golf Club by two strokes. After three days of tiring but worthwhile golf, our team arrived home safely. “Overall, it was a satisfying and well organised trip,” that was the comment from most of the members.

A letter of appreciation was forwarded to Liberty Travels for the neat travel arrangements for the entire trip that included the golf games and a free dinner for all our players. The unofficial feedback from some of the participants of the trip was that it was well organised and cheap and worth every cent of their money. Except for the slight breach of our own rules for interclub matches, nothing untoward happened. Those who infringed on our rules were given letters seeking explanation failing which they will be suspended for two interclub matches as stated in the By-Law for competition.

Raffles Country Club

Members will be happy to learn that KGNS and Raffles Country Club (RCC) in Singapore are now affiliated. Nestled a short 25-minute drive from the city-country’s famed Orchard Road, RCC offers two immaculate challenging 18-hole golf courses - the Lake and the Palm on lush, wooded hilly landscape where many of the golf holes hug the bank of the Tengeh Reservior. Designed by the world-renowned Robert Trent Jones Jr., both courses are carpeted with Tifdwarf for their greens and Bermuda/ zoysia for the tees and fairways. The tight, par-72 Palm course flows over gentle contoured terrain and features a large number of mature trees and strategic bunkering around its greens to produce the tougher challenge of the two layouts. Serious players looking to score well will need to exercise good course management, as a number of holes require strategy over strength. The par-72 Lake course, as the name suggests, weaves its way around lakes with deep bunkering and beautiful vistas on nearly every hole complementing the tranquil waters. It is a grand atmosphere for a leisurely round. A number of restaurants, including an alfresco outlet located near the main lobby of the clubhouse, a driving range, banquet & conference rooms, billiards, a fitness centre, a golf academy, jackpot & video games, modern locker rooms, a pro shop, swimming pools, lodging and badminton, squash, tennis courts are among the many outstanding facilities the golf complex offers. KGNS members using the club must abide by the rules and bye-laws of RCC. Bookings must be made in advance by contacting the RCC golf reception and your handicap card will need to be shown upon signing in before tee-off.

Smart Traveller When it comes to going overseas for a holiday, the biggest problem for many people using a smartphone is the discovery of shocking data roaming charges when they receive their bill. In some cases, they are more than the cost of the trip. There are several ways, however, you can reduce these data roaming costs while abroad: *Simply avoid data roaming when you are overseas. Except in an emergency, just turn off the data roaming on your smartphone (use airplane mode on an iPhone). *Buy a local SIM card which lets you roam at a much reduced cost. *Take advantage of WiFi hot spots, such a hotel lobby, cafes, coffee shops, or even at the airport. 30
