Imported Dutch Tiles Originally, Dutch tiles were made for floors. However, they did not wear well as foot traffic soon wore away the painted decorations. So at the end of the sixteenth century tiles began to be used on walls as protection against dampness. In Holland, many towns are intersected by canals and some houses stand with their foundations in water. The use of tiles in cellars, kitchens, fireplaces and wall skirting reduced dampness problems. Tiles used in this way were essentially a form of architectural ceramics. Their primary purpose was functional but the many scenes and decorations painted on them made them an attractive purchase for the growing middle class whose prosperity was brought on by the wealth of the booming sea trade. From these beginnings come the wide variety of modern tiles now used in many decorative ways in today’s homes. Throughout this catalog you will find tiles depicting Dutch scenes, occupations, seasons, births, marriages, sayings in both Dutch and English, as well as many purely decorative designs. Tiles can be used for wall hangings, or for use as coasters and hot plates. Frames for both wall hanging and as trivets are available and shown in this catalog. les add a special touch to a home.
