Foreword The Bundesverband BioEnergie e.V. (BBE) will be presenting the 11th International BBE Conference for Wood Energy this year. Energy production in Germany is undergoing a fundamental shift. The German government‘s decision to accelerate the closure of the country‘s nuclear power plants is paving the way for the postatomic age in the coming future. This shift in energy policy brings tremendous opportunities for renewable energies. Bioenergy is expected to play a vital role, showing both excellent potential for development and also a high degree of responsibility for stakeholders in the bioenergy industry. The expansion of bioenergy will raise questions in regard to its sustainability, resource efficiency, social acceptance and legal framework conditions for providing economic feasibility. These are some of the current issues facing participants at this year‘s conference. One of the central themes will be the impact of the amendment to the German Renewable Energies Law (EEG) in 2012. In order to guarantee the necessary expansion of potential sources of solid biofuels, it makes sense to support and subsidize facilities that can process several kinds of wood, including wood from forestry, landscaping, short rotation forestry, industry waste and other waste wood. As part of a complete scheme for regenerative resources, tree bark, regardless of its source, must also be included as a potential source of energy. What other demands does the wood energy sector have for the upcoming Renewable Energies Law amendment? Which new challenges will the wood energy industry have to face after the amended Renewable Energies Law goes into effect in 2012? Sustainability criteria for solid biomass will also be a key issue in the new future. What developments can we expect? Will the existing criteria for resource certification systems such as PEFC and FSC be applied or will additional requirements be expected? Which framework conditions and certification standards for the wood energy value chain will be set by the European Commission? What consequences will the increasing trend towards internationalization in industry and trade have for national wood markets? These questions are all linked to national and international biomass potential and the potential for biomass fuel and energy trade. Do short rotation forestry projects offer the viable means to open up new decentralized biomass production and help reduce imports? Can mixed biomass pellets be a way of expanding the biofuel base? A collaborative effort by the entire sector along with fitting legal framework conditions will be key to increasing wood‘s standing in the energy market. Stable market conditions are also a necessary requirement. The trade fair IHE Wood Energy and the 11th International BBE Conference provide an annual platform for the wood energy sector and the event has grown into the top industry meeting point in Germany. Around 300 conference participants at the conferences in previous years have guaranteed a fascinating exchange of knowledge and viewpoints. Come join us for a fruitful discussion and help shape the framework conditions for the future development of wood energy.

The Federal Association of BioEnergy (BBE)

The Federal Association BioEnergie e.V. (BBE) was founded in 1998, as an initiative of the businesses and institutions on the bioenergy market, in order to push the development of the market for biogenic energy usage in Germany, by pooling the various specialized interests. Currently, the association has 158 members, 24 organizations, 126 businesses and 8 research facilities from the fields of solid, liquid and gaseous bioenergy usages, from raw materials over facility construction and operators to planning offices and further relevant service providers (detailed member listings at: www.bioenergie.de).

One of BBE‘s main tasks is to ensure the members‘ common interests in politics and the public. Through the intensive and closely knit exchange between BBE and policy makers, BBE is able to help with the development of optimal conditions for bioenergy. BBE‘s contentual work is carried out by the active work of its members in expert committees and work groups. Thereby it is on the one hand possible for BBE to recognize current market developments quickly and to react appropriately and on the other hand, it is possible for BBE to be an important influence on the development of the necessary conditions needed for the expansion of bioenergy in Germany. Therefore the current spirit of optimism on the bioenergy market is due to the successful work of BBE – a success that has only been possible to this extent, through the networking of the market partners under the direction of BBE, the contribution of its members‘ know-how and past experiences and the development of common strategies.

Become a member of BBE!

Contribute to the continuous further development of the bioenergy market in Germany and support the BBE with your membership and cooperation. We can reach our common goals only together: more market shares for bioenergy and the construction and expansion of a sustainable energy industry. Become a member of the BBE. We offer our members the following advantages:

• Political representation of interests and the aggressive arrangement of political and

economic conditions on a national and European level (the BBE is the German member of the European Federation for Biomass (AEBIOM))

• possibilities to actively shape the work done in our expert committees for solid, liquid and gaseous bioenergy • regular up to date market news by email • PR work and the representation of our members‘ interests at trade fairs, conferences as well as conventions with lectures and publications.
