Definition of Multimedia Multimedia can be defined as the technology engaging a variety of media, including text, audio, video, graphics and animation, either separately or in combination, using computers, to communicate ideas or to distribute the information.

Multimedia • Multimedia means that computer information can be represented through audio and / or video, in addition to text, image, graphics and animation. • According to the Iterative Multimedia Association of US – “multimedia is compelling communication, Education, Entertainment and Reference that appeals to all sense”

Multiple Facets of Multimedia •

Any one or more of the following media and / or a combination of these are generally engaged in all multimedia projects. 1. Audio 2. Text 3. Graphics 4. Animation 5. Video The extent to which a particular kind of media is employed, is mainly determined by the nature and scope of the project. 4
Audio • Speeches, music and other types of sounds are use in multimedia. • Audio elements are generally used to enhance the usual multimedia environment, but in some cases it may become more effective than all other media put together. • Spoken dialogues, speeches, vocal music are the example of Audio. 5
Text • The usual text has some differences as compared to the print media. • Computers can display a variety of fonts, in different colors and combinations, different background for different multimedia title, which provide the ultimate results appear far better than the printed text. • Hypermedia add fun in multimedia project by providing information with linkages between the relevant topics. 6
Graphics • Pictures, photographic image and other art works are helpful to create visually fascinated multimedia title. • The old proverb “A Picture is worth - a thousand words”, still seems to hold true.

Animation • Animation is the artificial movements of texts or objects, which are created in virtual environments, using specialized software packages. • Animations are perhaps the most interesting part of multimedia computing. • Animation require artistic capabilities on the developer’s part. • 2D and 3D animations are used in multimedia title. 8
Video • The actual video clips that could be embedded right over the multimedia applications and can be packed in the background also.

Summery of the facets • The most difficult part of multimedia computing is that, all these independent media have to be organized as a single sequential stream of information and delivered. • Development of multimedia title don’t only require in depth understanding of the nature of every media but also require different ways of manipulating the same for a particular project. • It requires capability to make use of the appropriate kind of media, in the appropriate place. 10
Classification of multimedia •
Multimedia can be classified in three broad categories,
1. Interactive multimedia and non interactive multimedia 2. Entertainment multimedia and edutainment multimedia 3. CD-ROM multimedia, film / broadcast multimedia and miscellaneous multimedia 11
Interactive multimedia and non interactive multimedia • Multimedia with user participation is known as interactive multimedia. – Generally multimedia CD-ROM titles and Games are interactive means it require user participation.
• Non interactive multimedia means no interaction with user. – Corporate presentation and multimedia demo are example of non interactive multimedia. 12
Entertainment multimedia and edutainment multimedia • All games, multimedia novels and movie multimedia are examples of entertainment multimedia. • CD-ROM titles, which try to educate the user in some specific curriculum, along with the entertainment is known as edutainment multimedia.

CD-ROM multimedia, film / broadcast multimedia and miscellaneous multimedia • Multimedia title which are provided on compact disc are known as CD-ROM multimedia. • Films and news group company use multimedia to enhance performance. • Now a days multimedia is used in a touch screen multimedia which is also known as Kiosks. 14
