NEWS Dear Friends, Scott Bensinger and his son Graham wanted to share some meaningful time together, before Graham’s burgeoning career made it impossible. Their solution was inspired, and inspiring: they travelled the world, experiencing places they had always dreamed of and returning home with treasured memories. Their story, which they share with us in this issue, is a powerful reminder of how travel unites friends and family, and the perfect note on which to begin Sundowner’s new year. We have three new sections in Sundowner that will help you decide your next travel destination. “Where to Go Next” features upcoming group trips, while both “Cultural Calendar”

In addition, guests will enjoy a private belly-dancing lesson, cooking class, henna painting lesson and spa treatment. And of course, this journey includes all of the insider access that A&K guests are accustomed to, such as a four-day Nile cruise aboard the luxurious ‘Sun Boat IV,’ including scenic Denderah, far from the crowds and other cruise ships.

RuSSIA

YOuR EXPERT GuIDE LEADS YOu TO ‘VIRGIN TERRITORY’ — cOASTAL LAND ThAT hAS NEVER BEEN VISITED BEFORE BY MAN.

The first foreign expedition ship was allowed in the Russian Far East in 1989, two years before the collapse of the Soviet empire. Since then, only about two foreign ships have gone there per year due to Russia’s strict travel policies. Considering that this vast rural area covers approximately 900 square miles, it is understandable why so much of it has never been visited.

T

his July, Abercrombie & Kent guests will travel across the International Dateline to the Russian Far East, exploring much of the amazing world of Siberian Russia on A&K’s stalwart ‘Clipper Odyssey’ expedition cruise.

Leading the adventure is Sergey Frolov, a Russian-born mariner and explorer. Sergey anticipates the voyage of a lifetime because of the breadth of exploration guests will undertake, much of it to coastline never visited before by foreigner or Russian alike. “This trip is a true expedition where you’ll be discovering virgin territory,” says Sergey, “creating a genuine bond between you and nature.”

6 Winter 2008

This voyage focuses on Northern Kamchatka, whose coastal areas are rich with walrus, seal, salmon, and grey whale. Guests will also visit (via ‘Clipper Odyssey’s’ formidable Zodiacs) groups of indigenous Chukchis and Koryak people living in small coastline villages of Northern Kamchatka and the Koryakskiy region. The majority of these natives are subsistent reindeer and sea mammal hunters. Essentially the only items for sale in these villages are carved walrus tusks made by local artisans. During the Soviet era, the government gave many of these works of art as presents to visiting dignitaries, and also sold them for profit to museums throughout Europe. Sergey always includes a visit to one of these tusk-carving studios, where guests can closely

observe the artists working. This intimate experience, says Sergey, is yet another highlight of a trip that will inspire guests to return for another adventure to the Russian Far East. “After this amazing journey, guests will want to return again and again,” says Sergey. b

Bill Hurst is an Abercrombie & Kent guide in Asia. His photographs appear in Three Gorges of the Yangzi River, by Raynor Shaw.

EXPERT GUIDANCE: BILL HURST “What is your favorite country to visit?” It is the most common question from my A&K guests — and as you might imagine, nearly impossible to answer. Every destination has a unique appeal, ready for discovery by the open-minded visitor. Having said that, one thing is for certain: China, where I live, is a must. The economic boom taking place here is like watching history in the making. In total contrast, a sense of timelessness pervades the magical land of Myanmar where the icons of our global village are completely unknown. The magnificent temple complex of Bagan, where over 3,500 religious monuments survive, rivals Angkor Wat. Last year, for the first time in many, North Korea issued a limited number of visas to American visitors. With very short notice, A&K was able to organize two Marco Polo groups there, which I led. Two highlights of the trip were a tour of the captured US Navy vessel ‘Pueblo,’ which dominated headlines around the globe when it was captured in 1968, and exploring the city of Pyongyang, which was rebuilt after being leveled during the Korean War. Many A&K guests rated this journey as their best travel experience ever. As our world shrinks with even faster and more frequent communication, it has never been easier to visit even the most remote regions of this earth. How very privileged we are to be able to live the dreams of our fathers.

A FAThER AND SON

adVENtURE with ESPN, the host of his own online sports radio program, and was recently named one of sports illustrated’s “Top 25 Under 25.”

G

raham Bensinger and his father, Scott, may share the same house in St. Louis, Missouri, but it took sailing in a sampan in China, tracking chimpanzees in Tanzania and bungee jumping in South Africa to truly bring father and son together. That may seem strange, but then again, not everyone is as busy as Graham Bensinger. At 21, he is already a veteran broadcaster

10 Winter 2008

It took the Bensinger duo a few years of wishful thinking — and some help from Abercrombie & Kent — to plan a 24/7 bonding experience that crossed two hemispheres, three oceans, 24 time zones and 10 countries in 38 days. But the wait was worth it, says Scott, who works in financial services. “It was just very nice to be able to spend this time with my son before he becomes so immersed in his career that it becomes impossible to schedule.” Scott and Graham began their adventure in Hong Kong, where they rubbed shoulders with locals and visitors alike at one of Jackie Chan’s favorite nightspots. Next was a visit to Xian, where they viewed the Terra Cotta Warriors, the 8,099 larger-than-life figures located near the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, an experience Scott found

to be amazing. “I can’t put into words the magnitude, scope and numbers [of figures] — at least a football field long.” Graham concurred, adding that two other highlights of their visit to China was the Great Wall, where they went after Xian, and the country’s “wonderful” cuisine. Their time in Africa was decidedly more active, including tracking gorillas in Rwanda. To reach the gorillas, they had to hike through rough brush, crawl through bamboo and trudge over rolling hills and lush fields. Their reward was standing among a family of 32 gorillas, including three 400-pound silverbacks who stood not more than seven feet away. Such proximity might scare the average person, but not these two. “I am not a fearful person,” says Scott, “except for poisonous snakes.” Which is why another adrenaline-packed

adventure, shark cage diving in South Africa, was a must, although Scott admits it was challenging due to rough seas . Despite feeling sick when he dove into the shark cage, Scott says the experience was even more exciting than he had anticipated. Their final exhilarating experience occurred in Stormsriver, South Africa, where they bungee-jumped from the Bloukrans River Bridge, the world’s highest single-span arch bridge. As thrilling as this was, both Graham and Scott say the highlight of the trip turned out to be something considerably more emotional: a visit to Nairobi’s Kibera Slums and Stara Rescue Center, a school for needy children. “We couldn’t have gone to Africa without seeing a true struggle,” says Scott. Their experience in Nairobi was profoundly moving, and inspired the father and son team to found the Graham Bensinger Foundation, a non-profit organization created to help support impoverished African children. “It

CRUISE THE YANGZI

IN LUXURY A

s pioneers of luxury travel in China, Abercrombie & Kent is once again blazing a trail in the “Middle Kingdom.” Later this spring, A&K, in conjunction with Royal Orient Cruises, is launching the MS ‘Yangzi Explorer,’ the first boutique five-star cruise ship to sail down the breathtaking Yangzi River. “We have reimagined the Yangzi River cruise experience,” says Geoffrey Kent, Chairman and CEO of Abercrombie & Kent. “Staterooms will be elegant and wellappointed and meals delicious.” Cruising the Yangzi with A&K is the perfect way to explore in the utmost comfort this spectacularly beautiful but rather inaccessible part of China. See thriving riverside towns, temples and pagodas, dramatic cliff faces and sheer peaks, and of course the impressive Three Gorges Dam, touted as being the largest hydro-electric power station in the world by capacity when it is completed. The intimate 124-passenger ship includes spacious deluxe cabins and suites with

balconies and interconnecting rooms that provide perfect retreats for families. In addition, the ship has a spa, fitness center, viewing lounge with a bar, and an elegant dining room serving the finest Chinese and Western cuisine. A&K guests enjoy privileged access to shore excursions led by their own guides and in their own vehicles. These excursions include the Three Gorges project and a visit to Fengdu, a necropolis modeled after the Chinese Hell in Taoist mythology, or Shibaozhi, where you can see the famed wooden Red Pavilion and temple. “Our passengers will be able to enjoy the personalized attention and superb service possible when the guides, staff and crew are able to focus on a handful of guests and not hundreds of passengers,” says Mr. Kent. This springtime is the perfect time to cruise the Yangzi, followed by a tour of Beijing, a city bursting with energy as it prepares to host the summer Olympics. b

involved plenty of great Tuscan wine and food — and roosters. “The rooster is the symbol of the Chianti wine region, plus they helped provide the ambiance for a great Julius Caesar-themed toga party,” says Dodson.

W

hen you hear “Tuscan villa,” a toga party may not be the first thing that comes to mind. All the more reason to have one, thought Tom Dodson’s friends when they planned his 60th birthday this past September at the Villa di Panzano, located in the Chianti region of Italy. Dodson says the party

14 Winter 2008

The evening was a success with the help of Todd Wurban, the villa’s concierge, and Alida, its cook. “Todd, Alida and her staff went beyond our expectations,” says Dodson. “The food and service were as good as any five-star hotel.” Deep in the heart of the Chianti region, amid vineyards, cypress trees and rolling green hills, Villa di Panzano is the epitome of a spacious Tuscan farmhouse, with terra cotta floors, large stone fireplace, grassello walls, seven bedrooms and a beautiful pool and terrace to relax on.

“The villa was absolutely beautiful,” says Dodson, adding that another appeal of the house was its proximity to nearby villages and cities including Florence, San Gimignano, and Siena, where he and his entourage explored in the afternoons. Dodson particularly enjoyed Florence for “the beauty of the city and its historical buildings and museums. San Gimignano was beautiful because of all the tall towers that survived the war.” Dodson definitely plans on returning to Villa di Panzano with his friends and family one day. “The brochure only hints at the beauty of the villa. Its grounds were spectacular, and Alida and Todd made our visit one we will never forget.” b

HOTEL MARQUÉS DE RISCAL THE LUXURY COLLECTION

Nestled among the hills and vineyards of Rioja Alavesa in northern Spain, Hotel Marqués de Riscal’s curved steel and titanium surfaces create a stunning contrast to the area’s local sandstone.

Abercrombie & Kent’s Private Jet journeys reveal the world’s greatest places in ways that are often surprising — and always inspiring. A guest on our 2007 Nine World Wonders journey asked us to share a transforming experience that began when the group visited Cambodia in the company of their local Abercrombie & Kent guide, Nhea Samban.

W

e visited local villages dotted with simple wooden huts (raised on stilts for natural air conditioning) that each family built themselves. We went into several of them, meeting the multi-generational families, and watched as the elder generations laughed with their grandchildren, and taught them how to carve wood and cook. As one of my fellow travellers put it so eloquently, ‘We Americans, who are blessed with so many things, could see the Cambodian villagers as people who had relatively little. And yet they seemed to have so much more than many of us: Genuine happiness and demonstrated love and caring for one another.’

The families support themselves by working in the rice fields and selling the handiwork of the women including sugar candy, baskets, woven goods and wood carvings. The children attend school only until they reach the age of 12, when they are expected to contribute to their families’ income by helping out in the fields and at home. As we drove from one village to the next, we learned that Nhea volunteers for an organization that funds the digging of water wells in Cambodian villages, a vital part of their infrastructure. Without fresh water, people are more susceptible to disease. We became inspired, and decided to fund a new well. When Nhea asked, ‘in whose honor would you like to give the well?’ our response was immediate: ‘the A&K staff and crew of the 2007 Nine World Wonders Private Jet.’ — A Private Jet Traveller

ENDANGERED DESTINATIONS

the

galápagos islands

“It is the experience of a place that makes us want to preserve it for others to enjoy.” – Jorie Butler Kent

T

he islands of the Galápagos, six hundred miles off the coast of Ecuador, offer an opportunity to interact with the natural world to a degree that’s virtually impossible anywhere else. Swim and snorkel with sea lions and turtles. Stroll past colonies of penguins and blue-footed boobies. Imagine yourself as Charles Darwin seeing a giant tortoise for the first time. These creatures regard you with friendly curiosity, having no fear of people – but they are threatened nonetheless, with increasing population, over-harvesting of marine resources and the introduction of invasive species imperiling their survival. Explore this magical ecosystem with Abercrombie & Kent on a small,

18 Winter 2008

environmentally friendly expedition ship, ‘Eclipse.’ Strict guidelines for vessel operation and passenger conduct are observed, reinforced by the guidance of onboard naturalists dedicated to preserving the islands and their unique inhabitants. The Rainforest Alliance recently awarded ‘Eclipse’ its Smartvoyager certification, recognizing that the ship meets a set of strict conservation standards for protecting the environment, wildlife and the well being of workers and local communities. On an ‘Eclipse’ expedition, easy walks and more challenging hikes led by expert guides with Level III certification offer close-up views of sea lion, Sally Lightfoot crab, penguin, pelican, frigate bird and tortoise. Snorkeling equipment and kayaks are available for those with the urge

to explore. A fleet of inflatable pangas – rubber boats that are quick to launch, stable and able to land almost anywhere – make even the smallest islands and their extraordinary wildlife accessible. The Charles Darwin Research Center is particularly interesting as it houses “Lonesome George,” the last remaining member of the Isla Pinta subspecies who is estimated to be anywhere between 100 and 150 years old. According to the center, efforts are being made to mate him with a female of a related subspecies, but he has shown little interest. “Lonesome George” may turn out to be the last of his kind … and an emblem of an entire ecosystem slowly passing out of existence. b

FRIENDS OF CONSERVATION

With ongoing support from A&K, Friends of Conservation (FOC) has been able to make a positive difference in the Greater Masai Mara Region of Kenya, one of the most biologically diverse and ecologically important regions of the world.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF A&K SUPPORT

I Jorie Butler Kent at work in the Maasai community

n 1982, when Jorie Butler Kent founded Friends of Conservation, illegal poaching had reduced African rhino to the brink of extinction. Patrols were initiated to monitor eleven rhino remaining in the Masai Mara National Reserve, and FOC worked with the Kenya Wildlife Service to develop an innovative and highly successful program to relocate almost all of Kenya’s black rhino into protected areas. Under the leadership of Jorie Butler Kent FOC efforts expanded, working with the tourist industry and involving local communities in conserving the wildlife dispersal regions outside the Reserve.

FOC has distributed 250,000 tree seedlings to reverse deforestation, promoted fuel-efficient stoves, set up Conservation Clubs in 50 schools, and established a mobile outreach unit to reach remote areas with the message of conservation. A&K has provided support of over $3.5 million in cash and in-kind donations since FOC was founded. FOC is now an international conservation organization with His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales as Royal Patron, actively involved in Africa and in supporting partner projects around the world.

VISIT FRIENDSOFCONSERVATION.ORG, OR CONTACT [email protected] FOR MORE INFORMATION ON FOC GRASSROOTS CONSERVATION PROJECTS. Friends of Conservation is a registered 501(C)(3) not-for-profit organization, and 100% of your donation to FOC is tax deductible.
