Magical Mystery Thames

Akb ar’s Ca ke

Zaha Hadid’s futuristic project, “Habitable Bridge” seems like a crystal skyscraper toppled over and split into shards over the River Thames. Opposite: Giampaolo Di Cocco’s playful image of London’s Tower Bridge replete with submarines and Beatles references.

The River at once evokes futuristic visions, ludic images of doom and the unsettling history that fueled Britannia’s former glory. In the twilight of his life, rebel novelist Henry Miller, the author of ‘Tropic of Cancer’ and other books that shocked the literary world, met the stunning young actress and dancer, Brenda Venus. Miller became her mentor. She became the muse who inspired his last passionate letters and a still unpublished guide to Miller’s Paris. Brenda Venus tells Cartier Art about her times with Miller in an exclusive interview. TEXT BY PATRIZIA SANVITALE PHOTOS BY MARTIN MARTIN

Shooting Horses PHOTOS BY MONICA STEVENSON

Equine photography takes on a new dimension at the Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow.

Sorcery, Science and Art

in New Mexico

You can almost hear the hooves pounding across the frozen lake, feel the steam rising off their bodies and the adrenaline coursing through their blood. In other shots: a quiet moment, the horse resting, feeding at the trough or gazing quixotically at some scene beyond the camera’s range. It seems serene but you can sense the potential ready to be unleashed with a crack of the whip or a kick. Hazy silhouettes languish against the harsh glare. The rider melds into the horse — both of them ravaged by an ethereal light reflected off the snow. There’s something unsettling about Monica Stevenson’s horse photos — at once quiet and violent, fixing specific moments in time while flirting with some eternal ideal — as if she had managed to waylay the instant, take it out of its temporal context and bring out the particular gesture that goes unnoticed amid the noise and movement of a sporting event. Following a tradition that stretches back as far as the visual arts themselves, Stevenson has been capturing the image of horses in motion for nearly a decade. This passion has inevitably led her to sporting events such as dressage and polo. “Photographing horses satisfies a desire for a passion… it is the balance between the athletic enjoyment and the visual enjoyment,” she says. “The idea is to transmit the animal nature of the subject, that transcends time and place. I try to reach people who aren’t just horse aficionados.” There are very few professional photographers that specialize in equine photography today, and Stevenson’s images have a sedate intensity that can’t be found elsewhere. “The idea is to reduce the impression of contemporaneity. For me, colors announce that the photo has been taken in the 21st century,” she says. So she chooses black and white for her images; and through a two part bleaching process and special use of toners in the developing stage, she creates the shadowy sepia tones that characterize her work.

Something in the crisp desert sky and sunburnt earth belies the apparent calm of the surroundings. A convergence of forces: fusion and fission, creation and dissolution, harmony and chaos — constantly vying with each other to produce an eerie beauty. T E X T B Y P H O T O S A R T

2. Neon effects had long been associated with a magical presence or glow, but it wasn’t until 1898 that Sir William Ramsey and M.W.

10Travers discovered the gas, which they named after the Greek word “new.” The gas is responsible for the orange-red color seen in the discharge tubes used in advertising. A blue or green color can be obtained by adding a little mercury to the neon in the discharge tube.

3. On certain islands off the coast of ancient Illyria, people with excessive facial hair were considered to have magical powers and were often consulted as oracles. By burning their hair and having an expectant mother inhale the fumes, they could also ensure that a newborn would be 11 free of unclean spirits. Over time, clan priests developed the practice of wearing masks with simian or lupine features during various ceremonies.
