JEWISH ADVENTURE BEGINS HERE August 2016 | Av 5776

H E LL O, AW E S OM E T BA M FA M I LI E S! Welcome back to another exciting year of youth engagement adventures here at Temple Beth Am! We are thrilled to share with you the continued growth and evolution of programs for K–12th graders. This year is packed to the brim with brand-new programs like the Social Justice Teen Fellowship for 11th and 12th graders and the Rosh Chodesh and Shevet Achim clubs for 8th and 9th graders, as well as the expansion of BAFTY K–2, BAFTY 5, BAFTY 6, and BAFTY 78 youth group events. Get excited for weekend retreats with hundreds of Jewish teens, old favorites like BAFTY’s third annual Jog for Jenny 5K and BAFTY 56’s fourth annual Kayak Adventure, a Sushi in the Sukkah feast for 7th–12th graders, a visit to the chocolate factory for BAFTY 34, temple shul-in’s and camp overnights, a drum circle extravaganza for Monday Night CHAI, community service opportunities, incredible trips to Key West, Disney World, Guatemala, Washington D.C., and more!

Thank you for your support and commitment to the varied opportunities we provide our youth for continued Jewish learning and living! A person’s Jewish journey can take many different forms. The “Jewish journey” is a common buzzword among youth educators. To journey is to explore, adventure, and experience. Your Jewish journey does not end with your B’nai Mitzvah, Confirmation, or high school graduation; on the contrary, your Jewish journey is a lifelong exploration of the self, bolstered by a strong, caring community. The magic of Judaism is expressed through many layers. This year, we will continue to provide educational and experiential opportunities for Jewish youth through a youth engagement program that enables you to choose and live your own unique Judaic adventure. We strive to provide for the diversity with which different individuals explore their Jewish identities. Judaism is a multi-faceted, ever-evolving story replete with a large and supportive community, relevant life lessons and values, and constant opportunities for adventure! As part of our adventures this year, we are thrilled to announce that BAFTY (9th–12th) and Temple Beth Am have been chosen to host NFTY-STR Spring Kallah during the weekend of March 3–5, 2017. The TBAM community is invited to join the BAFTY teens as we host over 400 Jewish teens for a weekend of Shabbat, music, social action, friends, and FUN! Whether you are interested in helping house teens or just want to witness part of this spectacular youth event, mark your calendars for March 3–5, 2017! Youth begins with “you,” and we need your input and your presence to be successful. As you read through the program guide, please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any questions. We can’t wait for another year of growth, learning, and Jewish adventure! Looking forward to seeing you soon! Cheers,

Make Your Own Adventure Turn an adventure book into a computerized game. Learn about a particular time in Jewish history and design your own adventure based on the choices you make. The books used in the course give the reader options, each with consequences that require further decisions. This is a wonderful way to learn about history and personal responsibility! Ask the Rabbi In this intimate and safe space, students will be able to find Jewish answers to life’s big questions. Class will be based on students’ inquiries. Sheva Plus: Mysteries of the Torah Rabbi Barras will guide middle school students in a discovery journey as they delve into Jewish text and strengthen their Jewish identity. Mandatory for 7th grade students whose bar/bat mitzvah is in 2016. Jewish Jam! Do you love to sing or play an instrument? If so, this class is for you! Jewish Jam provides powerful Jewish leadership training though music while deepening your repertoire and your skills as a song leader. Participants will learn techniques geared toward becoming strong Jewish leaders in the community. You will need to bring your instrument to the sessions. Confirmation Confirmation is a life-cycle milestone developed by leaders of the Reform Movement about 100 years ago to honor teenagers who are continuing their Jewish education into adulthood. SHEVET ACHIM AND ROSH CHODESH CLUBS FOR 8TH AND 9TH GRADE STUDENTS

Rosh Chodesh and Shevet Achim are two complementary monthly programs to create experiences for 8th and 9th grade girls and boys, respectively, a learning opportunity in addition to Monday Night CHAI that inspires Jewish teens to openly explore fundamental questions of identity and society.

The programs help teens reach their full potential by connecting relevant content with enduring Jewish values, and by fostering positive peer-to-peer relationships through our trained mentors. These programs empower Jewish teens to grow into adulthood with confidence, compassion and a lifelong commitment to Jewish community. Life as a teenager can be stressful! Between school, enrichment classes, sports, family and friends, teens have little time to decompress. Rosh Chodesh and Shevet Achim offer an opportunity to bond with friends, explore issues that are pertinent to your life, and learn about yourself and each other. In a safe and close knit group, participants will develop a support network that will nurture their soul as well as give them the tools to navigate the journey of growing up as a Jewish American teen. Rosh Chodesh and Shevet Achim are programs from Moving Traditions. These programs were developed by educators, rabbis, social workers and psychologists to address the real needs of teens within a rich Jewish context. To learn more about these programs, visit movingtraditions.org. MOV I NG T R A DI T ION S

Moving Traditions believes that when Judaism promotes self discovery, challenges traditional gender roles and celebrates a diversity of voices, it has the power to move our teens, our communities and Judaism forward. Through its field-tested programs, Moving Traditions creates experiences that inspire Jewish teens to openly explore fundamental questions of identity and society. SOCIAL JUSTICE TEEN FELLOWSHIP

The Social Justice Teen Fellowship program is an exclusive, action-oriented program for 11th and 12th graders that seeks to empower Fellows to take responsibility and action for significant social, economic and environmental problems in their local communities, both within and beyond the Jewish community. Limited to only 12 participants, Temple Beth Am’s Social Justice Teen Fellowship combines Jewish text study with social justice activities and a joint project at a selected destination. This unique year-long program develops a commitment to the Jewish people and community service. It offers exceptionally- motivated 11th and 12th grade students an incredible opportunity, not only to Jewish life, but to make a difference in the world. Our Fellows become active participants, leaders and agents for change in the Jewish and wider world. Our programs are guided by the following values: Jewish Learning: Our Fellowship program provides a framework and a springboard to prompt advocacy and action through the study of Jewish texts. Social Activism: Judaism calls for responsible engagement with the world around us. Our program brings teens in contact with real social, economic and environmental issues within our communities and empowers them to apply their talents to bring about solutions and/or alternatives to “repair the world.” PRO GR A M H IGH LIGH T S

Our BAFTY (Beth Am Federation of Temple Youth) Board is up to the challenge of working all year to create a meaningful program centered around the themes of adventure, self-exploration, global and local social change, and the Jewish Journey! • Temple Beth Am has hosted a NFTY-STR regional event 3 times in the last 12 years! (We basically rock). • BAFTY’s third annual Jog for Jenny 5K will take place during the weekend of Spring Kallah on Sunday, March 5th! • NFTY-STR has been creating positive Jewish experiences and memories for Reform Jewish teenagers for nearly 80 years. HOW CA N YOU H E LP ?

This incredible opportunity is open to the entire congregation! Volunteer to house teens at www.tbam.org/springkallah. April 19–May 4, 2017 The March of the Living is a two-week international experience where teens from around the world come together each year and bear witness to the Holocaust in Poland and then travel to Israel to rejoice in the Jewish Homeland. The program commemorates Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, marching from Auschwitz to Birkenau and celebrates Yom HaAtzmaut, Israeli Independence Day, in the streets of Jerusalem. Open to participants in grades 11 and 12. “GI F T OF I S R A E L”

Formerly known as Passport to Israel, Gift of Israel helps to provide students with the opportunity to participate in an educational trip to Israel during their teen years. The program is sponsored by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. The plan works this way: Each year, for up to ten years, the family contributes a maximum amount of $100, and a match of up to $100 will be made by Temple Beth am and the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. At any time between 10th grade and the student’s senior year in college, the accumulated funds and interest can be applied toward the cost of an educational trip to Israel. Over the total saving period, your child will accumulate, with interest over $3,000. While this will not cover an entire trip to Israel, it will provide a significant portion.
