REQUIREMENTS There are a number of requirements to be met in order to participate in DOI registration and to become a data centre at TIB. The demands placed on you, as a DOI Service customer, are set out in contractual form. These include digital preservation and quality assurance, as well as the provision of so-called ‘landing pages’: 1. According to the DFG’s ‘rules of good scientific practice’, digital preservation and the accessibility of objects must be guaranteed for a minimum of 10 years. 2. The objects should feature quality content, i. e. they should be worthy of citation.* 3. A DOI name should always refer to a landing page, and not to the actual object. A landing page is usually an HTML page containing a description of the object (metadata) and information concerning access. *  DATA Q U ALITY

An object worthy of citation is an object that merits publication and that assists other scientists in their work. Objects that can be registered with a DOI name: data sets / software / conference papers / simulations / videos / pictures / research reports / open access articles

DOI NAME Each DOI name is a unique sequence of alphanumeric characters consisting of two parts: a prefix and a suffix.

prefix

suffix

DO I : 10 . 2 314/5 2 9 8 2 7735 Prefixes are allocated to you — as a data centre — by tib. You are free to create the suffixes yourself. However, the DOI name should be a random character string. Please refrain from using meaningful names or designations because proprietary rights may change, but a DOI name remains unchanged. It has become common practice within the scientific community to mark various versions and parts of an entity in the DOI name. Full-stops (.) are used to mark different versions of an object; slashes (/) are used to describe parts of an entity. E X AM PL E S

D O I NAME

Please only use the following characters for your DOI names: A  – Z a  – z 0   –  9 : (colon) . (full-stop) - (hyphen) _ (underscore) / (slash) Never use umlauts or special characters because they have specific meanings in URIs and can lead to the incorrect solution of the DOI name!

DOI REGISTRATION The DataCite Metadata Store (MDS, https:// mds. datacite.org) is the central tool for DOI Service customers. In order to set up an MDS account for you, we need to know the contact person at your institution and the domain(s) where the objects are to be stored. The MDS enables you to register DOIs and their associated metadata in just a few steps. 1) L ogin to http://mds.datacite.org 2) Select ‘Register new data set’. 3) Enter the DOI name (prefix and suffix). 4) Specify the URL of the landing page. 5) Upload the XML file with the metadata. 6) Press ‘Save’. 7) An automatic check is performed of the uploaded information and validity of the XML file.

DOI TEST ENVIRONMENT There are two ways to test the DOI registration: 1. In the production system, all data centres have access to the general test prefix 1 0 .50 72 . DOI names with this prefix are deleted at irregular intervals. No productive DOI names may be registered with this prefix. 2. In addition, DataCite offers an entire test environment: http://test.datacite.org. Here you can test all functions and services of the DOI registration in a closed system. Please contact us to gain access to this system.

NOTE

If you have to register large amounts of objects, we offer an automatic registration via an API (https://mds.datacite.org/static/ apidoc) for both the production system as well as for the test environment.
