PUMA The new headquarters of PUMA® AG, one of the largest sporting and lifestyle goods manufacturers worldwide, comprises a usable area of 35,000 m² and accommodates an administration center with office spaces, a companyowned congress center and a PUMA store. With electricity fully generated from renewable energy sources, a thermally active building structure (TABS) and an intelligent building automation and control concept, the building now offers climate-neutral operation. Key requirements of the project were the efficient use of electricity plus an optimum interplay of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting and shading. The solution is based on the Desigo™ building automation and control system supplied by Siemens and results in reduced operating costs, user-friendly operation and improved security. The Siemens Solution Partner IPM GmbH successfully planned, developed and implemented this highly innovative project for PUMA.

Courtyard by Marriott Courtyard® by Marriott in Istanbul is a four-star hotel with 262 rooms. To further increase comfort, safety and security for their guests, Courtyard by Marriott opted for a new building automation and control system. The primary objective of a luxury hotel is the well-being of its guests. This is achieved through a high level of comfort in every aspect – including comfortable rooms or clear evacuation instructions in case of fire. That is why the new Courtyard by Marriott in Istanbul required a cross-discipline building automation solution that integrates and controls everything from HVAC control to fire safety and securityrelated systems and that amortizes quickly. With Desigo™ from Siemens, the Siemens Solution Partner SCS TESISAT deployed a flexible and future-proof building automation and control system that perfectly meets the requirements of the Courtyard hotel. It ensures not only a high level of comfort for guests, but also economical operation.

Staybridge Suites The new Staybridge Suites hotel in St. Petersburg, Russia, is an innovative, all-suite hotel with 294 rooms. It is the very latest of the Staybridge Suites chain and part of the world's leading hotel group IHG (Intercontinental Hotels Group). Large hotels offer particular challenges to security and fire protection systems. Reliable fire detection to safeguard the lives of guests and staff is a priority. However, the prevention of unwanted false alarms and ensuing full-scale evacuation of the hotel is also very important. In less than 6 months, the Siemens Solution Partner Confident successfully installed the Cerberus™ PRO fire protection system integrated into an MM8000 danger management system. Due to the intelligent technology and wide portfolio of innovative products, Cerberus PRO offers the highest level of reliability and protection against false alarms. Thus, with the new installation from Siemens in place, Staybridge Suites can ensure a safer environment for its guests and employees.

The Mall Maidstone The Mall Maidstone hosts 75 shops on a total of 49,700 m² of retail space. It is one of the most important shopping centers in the British town of Kent and receives about 30,000 visitors a day. To continue providing a safe and secure environment for both visitors and employees, The Mall Maidstone wanted to have their 32-year old fire detection system replaced. They contracted with the Siemens Solution Partner Senseco Systems Limited and decided on the CerberusTM PRO fire protection system. Although the installation took place right before Christmas – one of the busiest times of the year – the project was completed on time. In order to avoid interruption of business operations, the old fire detection system had to be replaced in phases. In addition, the old system was maintained while installing the new one, ensuring the safety of people in the mall at all times.

The basics of a fire Any fire requires the presence of each of the following components to burn: Oxygen Heat Combustibles Removal of any of these three elements will extinguish the fire. Based on this principle, automated extinguishing systems focus on the removal of oxygen or heat.

Reduction of oxygen If the oxygen concentration drops below 13 vol%, the combustion process stops and the fire goes out. Siemens has a wide range of extinguishing solutions with natural agents (nitrogen, argon or carbon dioxide) based on this principle. In addition, water can be used to cool down the fire and thus remove the heat.

Reduction of heat The reduction of heat will stop the combustion process and thus extinguish the fire. This can be done using either chemical agents or water. When chemical agents react with the fire, the heat is absorbed, which in turn lowers the temperature to a level where the fire cannot burn.

When water is applied to the fire it evaporates due to the heat. Since the evaporation process absorbs a lot of energy, the heat is withdrawn from the fire and the fire goes out.

Removal of combustibles As long as there are combustible elements, the fire will burn. If the combustibles were removed, the fire would go out. However, in most cases this is impossible. This is why Siemens offers extinguishing systems focusing on the other two aspects: reducing either oxygen or heat.
