ANDREAS HINDRÉN President of the board

RASMUS BACK, Tutor Hello Freshers!! Last year I was in the same situation as you. I had quite a few thoughts and questions, like you might also. How is it to live alone? Would I find friends? Was there anyone I knew in the class? After a few days I started to know the rutines, find the different classrooms I was suppose to be in. I quickly found a group that I started to hang out with and eventually got to know the rest of the class too.

To end the

22

PARTIES In short you can say that there are two types of parties; sitzes and associations/the unions annual ball. the night the after party lets you party and celebrate Noviums birthday for as long as you want! The following day a “silliz” takes place, for all participants to meet and share last nights highlights. Everyone is welcome! PAMPAS WEEK is a week long event in Vaasa with several different events each day. Pampas is another word for Ostrobothnia where the national day, “Pampas national day”, is celebrated on Friday with an olympiad during the day and a big party at night. On the following day a “silliz” is yet again organized! VAPPEN students from different schools gather, wearing their overalls and graduation caps, to welcome spring and celebrate labour day together. The celebrations start on the last day of April and continue on the first of May.

STUDENT ASSOCIATIONS

At all units there are student associations that arrange parties (“sitz”) and other events during the year. Many of the student associations have clubhouses or offices where legendary events have been arranged. The student associations are the ones that put together the “Gulisintagning” (an event arranged only for college freshmen), they are the ones that make sure that you get an overall and overall badges. Contact your own student associations when you begin your studies and you will have friends for life.

23

SITZ At a sitz you sit at long tables and sing, eat and drink. Some sitzes can be theme parties where you dress up and play games. These kinds of parties are usually arranged in the student associations clubhouses or at a bar. The price is usually pretty low and often some sort of drink is included in the price. The dresscode is always your overall if nothing else has been decided. For the freshmen a “learn how to sitz” sitz is organized to get you started! ANNUAL BALL a more formal type of party. Men are supposed to wear a dark suit or a tuxedo while women are expected to wear an evening gown. Usually it is the student unions or associations that arrange these parties where you celebrate the unions/associations birthday. The party begins with a solennakt, where the guests can bring forth their gifts or greetings. These events are a bit more expensive, but it is worth it. A three course dinner with drinks is served, during which there are speeches and singing. After the dinner there will be dancing and a “nachspiel” for the rest of the night. The day after there will be a “silliz” ( a sort of breakfast sitz ) to which you are supposed to wear your overall. OVERALLS Almost all universities and unions/associations have their own different coloured overalls. The student associations are the ones that see to it that the students get their overalls. You decorated your overall with patches that you can get when you participate in different events of sitzes.
