Your guide to Girl Scouts San Diego 2016-2017 SPONSORED BY

Your guide to Girl Scouts San Diego Girl Scouts San Diego was chartered in 1917, starting with Troop 1 in Coronado. In honor of our centennial, we’ve planned a year rich with traditions and possibilities. This landmark year for us in San Diego is also the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts selling cookies! The 2017 cookie program promises to be an exciting one. We hope you’ll join us for the 100th Anniversary events listed in this issue of Compass, and maybe even hold celebrations of your own with your troop or service unit (see p. 7)! Share your events on social media with the hashtag #GSSD100. Register for the opportunities listed in Compass online at sdgirlscouts.org/events, or use the individual or troop forms available at sdgirlscouts.org/forms (search keyword: registration). Many programs have limited capacity, so register as far in advance as possible. Look to our website, e-newsletters and Facebook page for further updates. Whether you’re a girl, parent, volunteer or troop leader, Compass will help you plan ahead for events, weekend camps and your own activities. Have a stellar Girl Scout year!

Opportunity Funds are available to individual girls and adults (not to troops/groups, as they should be financially self-sustaining). This assistance supplements existing troop resources and will not cover 100 percent of a particular need. It should not be used in place of solid budget planning and money-earning projects. Applications are reviewed by committee. Amounts granted vary based on need and availability of funds. The Opportunity Fund Philosophy and Guidelines and application forms are available at sdgirlscouts. org/forms (search keyword: opportunity) and in the resource centers.

Refund/cancellation policies

Program events: Refunds are available only when the event is canceled by our council. Camp: Once your troop is placed in a weekend camp event, $100 of your initial payment is non-refundable. There are no refunds for cancellations made less than one month prior to the weekend, and your troop is responsible for the remaining balance. We do not administer refunds based on weather changes, unless the weekend is canceled by our council, in which case you are entitled to a full refund or reschedule. Community partner events: Refunds are at the discretion of the individual community partner.

Girl Scout summer camp

What adventure will your camper have? At Girl Scout summer camp, every girl can: • • • • • • •

Have fun and make new friends Experience the wonders of nature Develop confidence Learn life skills like problem solving, leadership and teambuilding Step outside her comfort zone and try new things Learn to be her best and treat others with respect Excel in a nurturing, welcoming environment

Girl Scouts San Diego camps are accredited by the American Camp Association. This means all camps maintain high safety and quality standards in all areas, including site, program, transportation, administration, personnel and health care. Schedules and descriptions: Look for the camp listing in your mailbox in 2017. Check out camp information and register online at sdgirlscouts.org/camp beginning Wednesday, Feb. 1.

Day camps Day campers have a blast making friends and exploring new things. Along the way, they develop independence, learn teamwork and social skills, dream new dreams and become young leaders. Girl Scouts San Diego provides a wide variety of day camps at our Balboa Campus, Escondido Program Center and other locations countywide. Free shuttle buses and affordable extended care are available for some sessions. Camps run Monday through Friday, with occasional overnight opportunities.

Teen mentor program Day Camp Aides (DCAs) and Counselors-in-Training (CITs) are campers in grades 7-12 who support younger girls in partnership with adult staff. These teen mentors help lead activities and guide younger campers. Current training is required for all teen mentors. Grades 7-8 (DCAs): Help campers with crafts, games and songs and assist unit counselors. Learn about leadership from CITs and staff. Grades 9-12 (CITs): As a seasoned older girl, mentor DCAs as well as younger girls, and take additional leadership opportunities such as planning or leading activities on your own. Although originally designed to teach older girls how to help in day camp programs, DCA/ CIT training builds skills girls can use in other ways, such as helping a troop of younger girls, volunteering at a Girl Scout event or serving the community. DCAs must complete a full-day training class; advanced training is required for CITs. Dates for 2016-2017 membership year TBD.

Basic Backpacking Grades 7-12 and adults See dates below

Take the first step in your wilderness adventure! Designed for individuals, our three-step progression safely takes girls and adults out of the campground and into the woods. Wilderness Hiking covers outdoor skills and knowledge, and is a prerequisite for the Basic Backpacking course and Advanced Backpacking trips. Spend your morning in the classroom and your afternoon on the trail, learning about safety, proper gear and equipment, the Leave No Trace ethic, and building independence in girls. This class lays a strong foundation for more extraordinary adventures. Class fees include course materials and a “10 Essentials” starter kit. Classes start on council property, then move to local trails for a short hike.

Basic Backpacking — the second part of our threestep wilderness progression, designed for individuals — teaches everything you need to know to begin a multi-night outdoor adventure. Gain the knowledge you’ll need to make important decisions about gear, clothing, and trip planning, then hit the trail to practice and hone skills. To earn Basic Backpacking, you must complete all segments of the training: classroom instruction, group day hike and backpacking trip. In addition to the training and trip, you will be required to attend pre-trip planning meetings (dates TBD). Registration fees cover insurance and permits. Backpackers will need to contribute additional amounts to cover expenses such as transportation, food and equipment rental/purchase, dependent on the trip. Prerequisites: Completion of Wilderness Hiking.

Now in its fourth year, Girl Scouts San Diego’s Girl Advisory Board (GAB) is a girl-led group designed to enhance teen leadership in order to make changes in our community, inside and outside of Girl Scouts, by working with our executive team. GAB members educate one another on diverse topics in order to implement change and become selfless leaders. They create presentations, workshops, and lesson plans on relevant topics and, most importantly, chat with Girl Scouts leadership about their experiences as teenagers in today’s society.

Visit sdgirlscouts.org/adventurezone for more information and instructions on booking your session.

Girl Scout Juniors and up can participate in action packed four-hour sessions led by certified staff members. As a group, complete problem solving games, work through teambuilding initiatives on the ground, and attempt low and high elements. Challenge yourself to new heights with the support of a team.

GAB members make a one-year commitment to the group, including: • Serve as spokeswomen for the Cadette Ambassador community • Attending monthly meetings with the group • Jumpstarting campaigns to raise awareness about what’s happening in Girl Scouts as well as the wider community for girls and women • Participating in occasional opportunities in addition to scheduled meetings

Girls who participate in GAB are Seniors and Ambassadors with their fingers on the pulse of today’s teen community, who are passionate about raising their voices and taking action to address key issues for girls. ONGOING Global Arms of Advocacy Grades 9-12

Global Arms of Advocacy is a safe, collaborative, space where we educate ourselves and our peers on local and global contemporary issues relevant to women and girls. Our overarching theme for the 2016-17 year is stigma and stereotypes. Individual meeting topics may include (but are not limited to): women’s health and education (ie: sex education, STIs, HIV/AIDS), human trafficking, sexual health and sexuality, mental health and violence against women. Girls grow in a challenge-by-choice environment and take steps to tackle women’s oppression and its consequences with other older girls from all over the county. The girls involved make at least a one-year commitment to the group, attend monthly meetings, are actively involved in social media conversations, facilitate biannual awareness events and occasionally participate in additional planning and events outside of scheduled meetings. Meetings feature guest speakers, community outreach, films, interactive activities, field trips and opportunities to facilitate discussions among the group and with peers, as well as speaking and presentation opportunities throughout the year. Girls involved in Global Arms of Advocacy have: • Attended the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York City (2009, 2016) • Pursued Gold Awards and college paths based on their work in this group • Interacted with lively guest speakers from various community organizations • Presented workshops to their peers and fellow students • Attended conferences • Represented teens as panelists at Girl Scouts San Diego’s Conversations of Consequence on women’s inequality and economic empowerment Participants are selected based on a peer-led application process during August or September of each year. Patch and Journey Resources Patch programs Religious recognitions

Religious recognitions are created by national religious organizations/committees to encourage the spiritual growth of their youth members and reinforce many of the values integral to Girl Scouting. While My Promise, My Faith helps girls connect Girl Scouting with their faith, the religious recognitions programs help girls grow stronger in and learn more specifically about their faith. Each religious organization/committee develops and administers its own program. The To Serve God religious recognitions brochure shows the religious recognitions that have been created by various faith groups. You can find this brochure, a video that explains the religious recognitions programs, and other resources for collaborating with the faith community at P.R.A.Y. Publishing: www.praypub.org/partner_gsusa.htm.

Find patch requirements at sdgirlscouts.org/patches. Once girls have completed the appropriate requirements, they may purchase patches in Girl Scouts San Diego stores or at sdgirlscouts.org/shop. To supplement the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, we offer a variety of patch programs, such as Money Madness, DASHboard, and Ability Awareness.

Tools for Journeys

The resources described below will help troops get started on Journeys and may even spark an interest in new hobbies. While most of the items below have been grouped under the Journey they support, some are appropriate for more than one Journey or age group. Make reservations up to six months in advance (inclusive of the present month). To check out items, sign the reservation agreement and leave the required security deposit using a credit card. Find these resources at our Balboa, Escondido, North Coastal and Imperial Valley locations.

Some religious organizations are not affiliated with P.R.A.Y. or may not have a national office; to learn about their religious recognitions, contact your local faith leaders. Questions: Customer Care team, [email protected], (619) 610-0821

ABOUT GIRL SCOUTS

Girl Scout mission

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Who we are Founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912, Girl Scouts of the USA is the nation’s premier leadership development organization for girls. It provides an accepting, nurturing environment where girls also cultivate lifelong friendships, serve their communities and grow through new and exciting experiences. Girl Scouts of the USA is a nonprofit organization that serves more than 3.2 million members. Visit girlscouts.org for more information about the history and heritage of Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts San Diego San Diego’s first Girl Scout troop was founded in Coronado in 1917. Now — with more than 23,000 girl members and 12,000 adult members — Girl Scouts San Diego is one of the nation’s largest councils. Visit sdgirlscouts.org for more information. Membership Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5-17 — regardless of racial, ethnic, socioeconomic or religious background — who make the Girl Scout Promise, accept the Girl Scout Law, and pay annual dues of just $15. In addition, older girls and adults may participate as members/ volunteers and through the Girl Scouts Alumnae Association (sdgirlscouts.org/alumnae). What Girl Scouts do Through Girl Scout programs, girls can do almost anything — learn new sports and hobbies, prepare for college and careers or travel to exotic destinations. In partnership with adult volunteers, girls participate in activities based on their interests, goals and skill levels. They earn badges and Journey awards as they try new experiences and accomplish their goals. Girls also take on age-appropriate responsibilities. Teens, for example, lead troop meetings and plan events, while younger girls learn to choose activities based on a group vote. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience (“Discover. Connect. Take action.”) empowers girls to develop qualities that will serve them all their lives. Girl Scouts grow and gain new skills in an environment where they feel safe and accepted. Through girl-led activities, they learn by doing and working together. As they mature, their level of leadership expands.

Girl Scout Journeys A key part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience is the leadership Journey, a coordinated series of activities centered on a theme, each with an invitation to explore and take action and an opportunity to reflect, reward and celebrate. Each program level has its own set of Journeys, which includes fun, purposeful challenges spread over a series of sessions or troop meetings. The overarching themes of the It’s Your World — Change It!, It’s Your Planet — Love It! and It’s Your Story — Tell It! Journeys provide leadership benefits, while the badges help build specific skills. Additional information is available at girlscouts.org/program/journeys.

Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting Everything needed for the Girl Scout Journey experience is within the pages of the Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting. Housed in a colorful, easy-to-read three-ring binder, the guides are available for each program age level. All contain Legacy, Financial Literacy and Cookie badges, along with other Journey resources. Additionally, sets of badges in a wide variety of topics may be purchased to enhance the program experience.

ABOUT GIRL SCOUTS

Volunteers make Girl Scouts possible!

As a Girl Scout volunteer, you’ll introduce girls to unforgettable experiences, help them add meaning to their lives — and find more meaning in yours, while having tons of fun! They’ll learn they’re capable of far more than they ever imagined. Give an hour, a week or a year; every moment makes a difference. Whatever you choose, the time commitment is totally up to you. Flexible schedules Girl Scouts offers many options for adult volunteers. We offer multiple opportunities for adults to work with girls and/or other adults, in large and small groups, and near your home, at our offices or outdoors. These include: Help for a day: • Volunteer at a one-time program event like Operation Thin Mint Sendoff Celebration or Urban Campout • Sign up as a special interest volunteer — share your hobbies with a local troop Make a short-term commitment: • Plan a weekend campout or other local event • Be a spokesperson to recruit volunteers and girls • Help at a summer day camp (three to five days) • Serve on one of our committees, such as Gold Award, Property, Urban Campout or Finance • Manage cookie sales in your local area Commit to girls for one year or longer: • Serve as a delegate — be the link between girls, volunteers and the board of directors • Train other Girl Scout volunteers Contact our volunteer services team at [email protected] with questions on how to sign up … or additional ideas you have for participating!

Adult recognitions

Volunteers are an essential part of Girl Scouting. There are many ways to recognize volunteers for their time and dedication. Whether in the form of a simple “thank you” for a small job well done or a formal commendation for years of faithful service in a key position, acknowledgment lets the recipient know that she or he is noticed and appreciated. You can honor any Girl Scout leader or adult volunteer by nominating her or him for our prestigious high level awards, which are presented at the Volunteer Conference and Celebration in August. Once a Girl Scout, always a Girl Scout. As Girl Scout alumnae, you know just how transforming Girl Scouts can be. You hiked trails, camped out under the stars and canvassed your neighborhood to sell Trefoils and Thin Mints. You honed your skills with each badge you earned and ultimately learned how to be a leader. Today, you are the women who understand the importance of Girl Scouting. You are teachers, mothers, business executives and scientists who credit Girl Scouting as the place where you found your voice, formed lifelong friendships and learned new skills. You are the key component in developing and sustaining a strong Girl Scout presence in San Diego. If you were a Girl Scout, troop leader, volunteer or staff member anywhere in the world, register today to get involved with other alumnae in San Diego! Reconnect with old friends while making new ones and help keep the legacy going for a new generation of girls. Reconnect today with other alumnae in your community at sdgirlscouts.org/alumnae.

Guide your troop through girl-led activities with confidence. Get tips on what to say and do with girls at meetings. Daisy, Brownie and Junior meeting plans include supply lists and printables. Use them to delegate shopping or meeting activities to other volunteers. Customize and track events, meetings and activities, including attendance and badge or Journey completion. Remind parents of meeting details with customizable, pre-filled emails you send right from the Volunteer Toolkit. Adjust plans as you identify girl passions and goals. Daisy-Junior: Year plan choices include two Journey years, a badge or petal year, and a plan- your-own-year. No matter which your girls pick, they can easily eliminate meetings that don’t fit their goals, and add extra meetings from other year plans that look like fun. Cadette-Ambassador: The plan-your-own-year, troop communication and attendance features help you stay organized. The read-only parent view allows families to see your troop calendar and meeting details so they can appreciate the goals of each meeting or outing.

Get started: 1. Once you’re registered and confirmed as a Girl Scout leader or co-leader, you’ll receive an email with login credentials for MyGS. 2. Creating financially empowered leaders Parents and other adults with girls in their lives can help girls develop financial literacy skills now and in the future. Here are some tips: Tip 1: Support girls’ opportunities to develop the skills they need to reach their goals. Tip 2: Support girls’ goals and expectations for their financial future by steering clear of stereo- types about girls, women and money. Tip 3: Girls’ financial literacy comes primarily from parents: Involve your daughter in your day-to- day financial activities and teach her money-management skills any chance you get! Tip 4: Include your daughter in discussions involving family finances and model shared decision making. The world’s current economic challenges have made one thing clear: Financial literacy skills matter now more than ever. However, there’s a gap when it comes to teaching young people the skills they need. Girl Scouts has financial empowerment programs to fill that gap. All girls can build their business savvy and hone their financial literacy skills through our curriculum, online learning and, of course, the Girl Scout Cookie Program, the largest girl-led business in the world. Today, as girls learn to handle money and be self-reliant, they learn how to bring their own values to the business world and how to use their time, talent and resources (including money!) to make the world a better place. Together these three opportunities give girls the tools to become financially savvy, now and in the future. 1. The Girl Scout Cookie Program — learning by earning 2. The Girl Scout Cookie Business Curriculum — skill-building badges and petals expanding business sense 3. The Girl Scout Financial Literacy Curriculum — skill-building badges and petals developing money savvy

5 SMART SAVINGS TIPS

It’s never too early to start saving money, that’s why Mission Fed is proud to support Girl Scouts San Diego and their financial empowerment programs designed to teach girls K-12 essential financial skills to be successful leaders of tomorrow. 1) SET GOALS: Determine what you WANT versus what you NEED. Start with a small goal like saving $5 or $10 to get in the habit of saving. 2) MAKE A CHART: A chart will help you keep track of your savings. Get creative with stickers and drawings of the items you’re saving for or design it on the computer. 3) PIGGY BANKS: Use multiple containers to save. Use one for short-term savings like

toys and clothing; one for long-term savings like a trip or your college fund; and one for your favorite charity. 4) SAVINGS MATCH: Ask your parents or guardians to match your savings contributions. 5) HAVE FUN! You might find out that it’s even more satisfying to save money than it is to spend it.
