FROM THE PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT STAFF

Dear Friends and Family, For the past year, we have continually used the word “new” in everything we do. New McHenry Recreation Center, new programs, new department logo and now a new look to our program guide. You have supported your Parks & Recreation Department for several decades, and in return we promise to make this program guide our best yet. We invite you to dig through our fall guide to find all the new ways you can have even more fun with us. We hope you’re ready for a tremendous fall season. In just over six months, the Recreation Center has become a popular destination for all ages to recreate. Excitedly, we have grown our fitness membership to over 1,300 members. But don’t worry, we still have room for a few more good friends! As the weather gets cold it might be time to think about bringing your exercise indoors, so we invite you to give us a try – 1,300 of your neighbors already have. With over 50 group exercise classes to choose from and specialty fitness classes, like TRX training, kettlebell classes and weight training for women, there’s bound to be something you’ll love. The Recreation Center is also host to several exciting programs such as our preschool enrichment classes, youth dance lessons and school age STEM activities. With these established programs thriving, we are excited to offer additional programs this fall such as adult ballroom dance and the holiday time Cookie Fest. Also offered is our first school day-off camp program, which may be a wonderful option for working parents. If you have interest in outdoor activities, then join us for a kayaking adventure or take a trip with our hiking club, and don’t miss the revamped Great McHenry Camp Out event in September! Add in our successful instructional youth sports programs, our popular sports leagues and the medal winning Marlins swim team, and we know you will find many great recreation opportunities for your whole family.

Enjoy the fun this fall and check out the best that McHenry Parks & Recreation has to offer!

Tot Rock

Recycled Art Animals Sometimes, throwing things away isn’t the best option! Children are asked to bring clean recycled cartons or bottles to make an animal out of their recycled materials. As well as making some easy and fun animals, children will learn the importance of recycling, and reusing common household objects. Program is without adult.

Sing, dance and play - make it a musical day! Your tot will move to the beat while using rhythm instruments like hand bells, tambourines and maracas. Coordination and motor skills will improve with movement props such as scarves, ribbons, and parachute play. Tot Rock is a structured program with educational, sensory and socialization components. An exciting new theme is presented each session. www.rockitkids.com. No class on Nov 24.

The McHenry Fire Protection District, in partnership with local organizations, such as the McHenry Parks & Recreation Department, is pleased to offer Remembering When™, a fall & fire life safety prevention program for older adults in our community. Remembering When was developed by the NFPA Center for HighRisk Outreach and the Centers For Disease Control. It is centered around 16 key safety messages which will be presented over 4 classroom sessions.

ADULT GENERAL PROGRAMS

Hugs Project

According to the Centers For Disease Control and the National Fire Protection Association, falls are the leading cause of death from unintentional injury for those over the age of 65. Consequently, one in five falls results in serious injury, leaving 30% of the victims unable to return to their home. Additionally, seniors are twice as likely to be killed or injured by fires compared to the population at large. Because no single agency can be responsible for reaching every older adult in our community, Remembering When is designed to be implemented by a coalition of local fire department, service clubs, churches, retirement communities, and others. The fire district desires to offer prevention strategies to meet the fire and life safety needs of our older adult community. Remembering When will offer these simple prevention strategies to help keep you safe. This initiative is a first step of EMS Prevention. Attend this free seminar to learn more. Through poor posture and repetitive movements our bodies acquire muscle imbalances. This imbalance leads to instability, tightness, muscle pain, numbness and eventually changes the way you move. One of the greatest benefits of massage therapy is to loosen those overly tight muscles to allow your body to move back into optimal alignment. Join this fun informative class to learn selfcare techniques to enhance your flexibility and the overall health of your body. Dress comfortably, loose fitting workout attire is recommended. Discipline

All McHenry Parks & Recreation Department (MPRD) programs require a minimum number of participants five business days before a class begins. A maximum number is also listed to ensure quality instruction. Classes may be combined and times modified to facilitate better programs. Receipts are mailed or emailed to those enrolled.

A positive approach is used regarding discipline. Staff periodically reviews rules with participants during program. If inappropriate or unacceptable behavior occurs, prompt resolution will be sought and the Behavior Code of Conduct will used as a guideline. MPRD reserves the right to remove a participant whose actions endanger the safety of him/herself or others.

Residents/Non-Residents Defined

The Behavior Code of Conduct includes:

The term resident refers to McHenry residents who live within the City of McHenry boundaries and who contribute financial support to the City of McHenry through property taxes. Some residents with a McHenry mailing address may not be residents of the City of McHenry. Please contact recreation staff at 815-363-2160 if you need residency information.

Show respect to all participants, staff and volunteers. Follow directions from staff and volunteers. Show respect to equipment, supplies and facilities. Will not use inappropriate, abusive or foul language. Will not show any disruptive or aggressive behavior (hitting, punching, slapping, kicking, biting, etc.), regardless of whether behavior is initiated or in retaliation.

The non-resident fee structure is in place to ensure fairness to our residents. Residents of the City of McHenry contribute financial support to MPRD through property taxes. The City Alderman have elected the non-resident fee structure to make non-resident use of programs and facilities equitable to our residents. “NR” means non-resident.

Family Defined A family is defined as no more than two adults and their unmarried children, up to age 21, residing within the same household, full time. Children ages 22 years and older, other relatives and/or individuals in the same household, are not included in this definition.

Safety is a Priority MPRD recognizes that safety is a top priority to all who visit our parks and facilities. We place an emphasis on safety to ensure that you, as park and facility patrons, have a safe, fun experience. To ensure your parks and facilities are as safe as possible, we need your help. If you see or hear about something that may be unsafe, i.e. broken playground equipment, an animal hole by an athletic field, or anything that you feel may be hazardous, please call us at 815-363-2160.

Care for Your Parks Preserve the natural beauty around you. Please don’t climb trees, cut branches, pick plants or flowers, or approach animals or their nests. Dispose of litter properly. Please recycle this brochure when finished.

REGISTRATION

Registration

Termination of Participant MPRD reserves the right to terminate the participation of any individual in any Department program, event or facility for disruptive behavior or if it is considered by the Department that continued participation of the individual is not in the best interest of the participant or others.

All photos and videos taken on Department property are for Department use and become its sole property.

If you need accommodations to participate in any programs, please contact the office at least one week prior to the start of the program.
