state commissioner activities In February 2010, Warren Goodall was appointed as the State Commissioner Activities for Scouts NSW. In a recent interview, Warren provided an update to

LW: We have heard about changes to our Activity Policies. Can you tell us a little about them please?

Look Wide on the future direction of Adventurous Activities for Scouts in NSW.

Look Wide: Hi Warren, can you tell us a little about your Scouting background please? Warren Goodall: Sure. My involvement in Scouting began in February 1966, at the same time that decimal currency was introduced into Australia. I joined 1st Warilla Cub Pack (South Coast and Tablelands Region) and stayed with the Group eventually becoming a Cub Instructor, Rover, AVL and Rover Adviser. I then held a number of roles at Regional level including Public Relations, Rovers, Activities and Training. I guess my passion leans towards the older youth sections, adult training and adventurous activities. LW: What do you see as the challenges for Scouting activities over the next few years? WG: Our activities need to be challenging for all our youth sections while still maintaining the very high safety standard that Scouts NSW has had over the years. The way in which we conduct these activities must at least met, and preferably exceed, the expectations of the community. Scouting has been very fortunate in that our standards are often used as the benchmark for other organisations including commercial operators.

WG: Certainly. The purpose of the Activities Teams is to support the youth program, and the way in which we deliver this support needs to be reflected in our policies and activity rules. Even trying to locate an activity policy is difficult. Some are in the Organisational and Information Handbook, others are stand-alone documents and some are spread across our Internet site in a range of locations. Terminology also varies from one policy to another. We will be introducing common terms through out all our activities and providing very clear guidelines on the best way to manage all the activities that our youth members and adults participate in. The primary aim is to make it easier for youth members and leaders to manage their sectional award scheme while using activity subject experts where necessary. In simple terms – I can understand the frustration of leaders who believed that our previous policies actually stopped the award scheme from happening. I believe that over the years we continued to add requirements to the qualification list that actually made it harder for people to gain those qualifications. The primary change is that youth members can apply for an activity qualification AFTER they have met the award scheme requirements. This allows the section leaders to manage the award scheme more effectively while still using Activity Teams to provide training and subject expertise.

LW: We have heard that there are new levels of qualifications. Can you explain these please? WG: If you look across our current qualifications there is no consistency between the different skills. Some use Leader, some Instructor, trainee instructor or Senior Instructor. Others use Preliminary, Level 1 etc. There was a clear lack of standardisation across the activity areas. Our new Policy will recognise novices and then three skill levels. A novice is anyone, youth or adult, with no current experience or skills. A Level 1 is a safe participant (youth or adult) who still requires supervision. A Level  2 is a person (youth or adult) who can run the activity with no direct supervision, while a Level 3 is an adult who can manage activities that have novices participating in. The practical skills needed for a Level 2 qualification are easily attainable by Scouts,

Venturers, Rovers and Leaders. While any Level 2 can look after a Level 1, a Level 3 must supervise all novices. LW: When will the new Rules come into affect? WG: They are currently being written and should be ready for implementation in the New Year. Your local Regional Commissioner Activities will be able to assist with the introduction of the changes. LW: What’s next on your Scouting agenda? WG: Attending the 2011 State Cuboree in January with my wife Jan (State Commissioner Cub Scouts). LW: Thanks very much for your time Warren. WG: My pleasure.

venturing and me by Andrew Monti 2nd Casino Venturer Unit For the past three years I have been part of the 2nd  Casino Venturer Unit, working along with a couple of others to achieve my Queen’s Scout Award, and having a blast while doing it. Some people think that Venturing can’t be fun, but for those of you that think this I have one thing to say, you are completely wrong! While in Venturers I’ve done everything from competing in three Dragonskins, to waterskiing with an Australian champion, teaching hundreds of kids how to abseil at the 2010 Australian Jamboree, snorkelling at Byron Bay, built an 18ft sea kayak from scratch, and was even twice on the winning team of Operation Nighthawk held in SE Queensland every year.

Venturing is a great opportunity for young people to learn new skills, improve on existing ones, gain confidence in yourself, and make a bunch of new mates while having a ball. You get out of Venturers what you put into it. Someone once said to me “Maximum utilisation of available resources.” Put simply this means use everything at your disposal to the max! If you have something, use it, and have a great time doing it! Remember you get out of Venturers what you put into it, and if I had’ve slacked off I would never have achieved anything in Venturers. I’ve put my all into my Unit and in return I have learnt skills I will use for the rest of my life, mates that I know I will be able to depend on in years to come, a great feeling of accomplishment, and memories of the good times had. What could be better than that?

NSW Lone scouts by Kimberly Gash Past NSW Lones Unit Secretary On 30 September 2010, while NSW Lone Scout Group was on their annual group camp, the Venturers and four leaders left camp for a formal night. This formal night was to congratulate three NSW Lone Venturers on completing their Queen’s Scout Award – Jaymee Manns (Cobar), Johnathan Morey (Hinchinbrook), and Kimberly Gash (Hazelbrook); and also to say farewell to the older venturers, Eyrn Midson, John Spiller, Johnathan Morey and Kimberly Gash.

the bus we followed the directions to our destination. On arrival, we all got our shoes and divided ourselves into five groups. The penguins had problems bowling as they couldn’t walk or move their arms properly. After leaving the bowling alley we went to Orange RSL for our dinner. We started with nibbles; the main meal was either chicken parmigiana and vegetables or roast beef and vegetables following by pavlova and cream.

All the venturers on camp, including four Leaders, one Venturer Leader plus the Group Leader and Assistant Group Leader Lones, and the State Commissioner for NSW Lones Scout group.

After we left the camp our first stop was Orange Tenpin bowling alley. We had problems in finding the bowling alley. After finding someone parked on the side of the road, “Wombat”– dressed as a penguin – got out of the bus and asked the parked driver for directions. As Wombat’s daughter I know that that is something he never does. The man, who was on the phone at the time said, “Sorry, I have to talk to a penguin.” After Wombat got back on “Wombat” on the right and “Kit Kat” on the left... as Penguins

Toasts were made at the dinner to Scouting, The Queen, and some of the Venturers who were moving on spoke of their experiences in Lones, and were all grateful for the chance to be in the movement and what achieved still being in Scouting, and looking forward to their next level in Scouting. On the bus home we were singing “the wheels on the bus” and making up our own verses to the song to include the NSW Lone Venturer Unit and Leaders. We were sure that everyone on camp could hear us when we arrived back. After arriving back to camp and getting out of our formal gear we were very happy going to bed after a great night out and it will be something to remember all our lives.

Building a Better Future Today.

an open letter to NSW venturers from Brian Tye, Chairman NSW Branch Trust Management Committee Not many of you would be aware that there exists within Scouts NSW a fundraising scheme designed to assist deserving Scouts/Venturers to attend Australian Jamborees/Ventures. The Fund is known as the Tony Balthasar Jamboree Fund and I thought you might like to learn a little more about Tony Balthasar and his ideals. Tony Balthasar was the only son of a Belgian diplomat, resident in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs. He was educated at Cranbrook, trained as a doctor, and then qualified as an anaesthetist. He led a very sheltered life, had no associations with Scouts or the bush as a child and never married. His hobbies included ham radio, Greco-Roman wrestling, photography, cars and travel. Dick Smith met Tony through the ham radio connection and invited Tony to come along to a 1st East Roseville Rover Crew Meeting. They were a particularly active Crew at the time and Tony was fascinated by this brand new world of Scouting. The Crew invited him to go walking, caving, canyoning, abseiling, etc and Tony was hooked. It was not long before he completed his training as a Rover Adviser and became a full time member of 1st East Roseville Rovers. One of Tony’s contributions to the Crew was to introduce them to the world of movie making. Super 8 movie film complete with a magnetic strip for sound recording was the latest movie making technology in the 60s and they would record a lot of their antics. There was a film made in the disused Eastern Suburbs railway tunnels. Dick Smith made a film on canyoning with sound commentary by Paddy Pallin. Tony would find the music, cut and splice the film strips and there were endless nights spent at his apartment doing the editing and voice-overs. For a film on caving they carried a generator and over 1000 metres of electrical lead and floodlights into Tuglow caves. Tony used to go to England

and Europe every year (and most years return with a new English made car). Few of Tony’s cars were suited for the bush, but he would take great delight in telling his social network about his Jaguar getting bogged in some fire trail or other. His Scouting connections expanded into England and Europe and he was particularly impressed with the range of activities, adventures and general life skills that Scouting offered young people all around the world. Tony attended an Alpine Climbing Course at the Scout Base in Kandersteg, Switzerland and encouraged his Rovers to venture further a field. With no dependents, he bequeathed to the Scout Association not only the Tony Balthasar Jamboree Fund but funds for the construction of the Scout Alpine Base at Jindabyne and a fund to assist East Roseville Rovers of merit to travel overseas to attend an alpine climbing course in Kandersteg. Tony Balthasar was one of nature’s gentlemen – a little eccentric perhaps but he gave to Scouting the reward for the difference it made to his life. Tony Balthasar’s reward lives on. If you feel you would like to attend the next Australian Venture in Tasmania 3 to 14 January 2012 but you think, perhaps finance could be a problem; we may be able to help. Please mail your expression of interest to: The Chairman NSW Branch Trust Management Committee PO Box 125, LIDCOMBE NSW 1825 All correspondence received from you is held in strict confidentiality and is only seen by the five member Commissioner Committee. Expressions of interest need to be received at the State Office by 31 May 2011 in order for an application kit to be sent out without delay.
