More than ever, the breakthroughs from evidence-based research and the accelerated understanding of the brain can advance treatment, reduce stigma and influence more people to seek care and benefit from the effectiveness of mental health care. Leaders in psychiatric and neuroscientific research on the symposium’s faculty will address clinical issues that mental health professionals can apply to their practice. Menninger is proud to present the symposium as we prepare to move into a larger hospital with an expanding education, research and advocacy agenda. To mark the completion of our new campus, we are offering this enriching symposium at a cost of only $30. Program Activity and program director: John M. Oldham, MD, MS, chief of staff, The Menninger Clinic Noon-1 pm........Registration, networking and box lunch, hotel ballroom 1-1:30 pm..........Moonshot to the Mind: How Collaborating Will Rocket Research Forward for Mankind Former Congressman Patrick J. 5-5:45 pm..........Recent Advances and Problems in Antidepressant Development Alan F. Schatzberg, MD Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University School of Medicine 5:45-6 pm..........Summary, completion of evaluations and distribution of certificates Target audience This activity is designed for psychiatrists, intermediate and advanced psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, addiction professionals and other mental health care professionals. Practice gap The traditional practice of psychiatry has relied on the expertise and experience of the clinician, built on knowledge of psychopathology. Despite substantial progress demonstrating the effectiveness of evidencebased treatment; however, stigma continues to shroud mental illness and many patients do not receive the treatment they need. Knowledge gaps exist between the known prevalence of psychiatric disorders and the identification of these disorders in suffering individuals, as well as between currently practiced treatment methods and new evidence-based treatment interventions. Progress in genetics, molecular neurobiology and brain imaging is elucidating our understanding of psychiatric disorders as brain disorders, and knowledge of new neuroscience holds the best promise for de-stigmatizing psychiatry and of enrolling patients in beneficial treatments. Learning objectives At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to: •R ecognize the societal impact of neuropsychiatric disease and positive discoveries in the field to address unmet needs of people living with mental illness. •A rticulate how mental disorders can be approached as brain disorders based on differences in the trajectory of brain development.
