Smart Planet is a secondary-level
course which appeals to students' curiosity about the world around them. Stimulating materials complemented by fascinating videos from Discovery EducationTM help bring classes to life and are the ideal starting point for successful language learning.
Grabbing students' attention and keeping them interested is one of the biggest challenges when teaching English. This is especially true when talking about Secondary Education. At Cambridge University Press, we know that this isn’t easy. That is why we’ve been researching this and trying to find solutions for some time now.
The discovery After a long research process involving a large number of teachers and students, we’ve come to a clear conclusion: curiosity is one of the main driving factors when learning English. If we can stimulate students' curiosity with interesting content, discovering the secrets of the world around us, by communicating with them in their own language, surprising them… then we’ll have already gone a long way.
The project With this idea in mind, we reached out to Discovery EducationTM, the best possible partner to help us stimulate our students’ curiosity. They provide their know-how with regards to creating content while we provide the necessary expertise in English Language Teaching.
Unit opener The unit opening page is designed to stimulate students’ curiosity about the unit topic. Highly visual pages present the contents and learning objectives of the unit to make students aware of what they will be studying.
Be Curious! Let’s take a unit tour
A summary of the four videos they will be able to watch in the unit. These are all from Discovery EducationTM and are available on a free DVD provided with the Student’s Book. These offer culture insights into life around the world.

The Be Curious section invites students to do a quick search of the unit to find two or three specific things. This helps them get an overview of the unit before starting.

Vocabulary There are two vocabulary sections in every unit. In these sections we have a clear visual presentation of the unit vocabulary. The students have the opportunity to hear the target vocabulary being pronounced and to practise saying it themselves (‘Listen, check and repeat‘).
There are two reading sections in every unit. The first, providing the context for the following grammar lesson, is based on the topic of the unit. The reading texts offer topics which have been chosen to appeal to teenagers’ interests and stimulate their curiosity about the world around them. All the texts have been recorded.
Your Turn activities give students the opportunity to personalise what they have learnt.
Short Fact boxes include surprising information based on the topic of the unit.
The readings are also backed up by a Discovery EducationTM video which is related to the reading text and offers a wider perspective.
Get it right! boxes highlight common errors made by Spanish speakers.

Grammar 1 The first Grammar page uses contextualised language presented in the previous reading lesson. Every grammar point starts with a quotation from the text and is first presented in a clear table illustrating the form with a short explanation of the grammar point where necessary. There is also a cross-reference to the more complete and definitive Grammar Reference at the end of the Student’s Book. A series of carefully graded exercises follows which move from more controlled practice to more open practice with the opportunity for personalisation.
Listening and Vocabulary Within most lessons there are opportunities to practise listening, but the skill is also treated independently in its own section. The listening activities include before you listen activities to prepare the students and are followed up by feasible comprehension tasks. The listening texts are then exploited in the second grammar section and also provide a model for the later unit speaking task.
The new language is contextualised in the preceding Reading text with clear grammar tables.
Plenty of opportunity is also given to practise new language points orally – Grammar in Use!

Grammar 2 The second Grammar section uses contextualised language presented in the previous listening lesson. Every grammar point starts with a quotation from the listening text and is first presented in a clear table.
Reading: Culture The second Reading text is based on a cultural theme. These cultural reading pages offer information on English-speaking countries all over the world. Here again we have Fact boxes with surprising information based on the topic of the reading. The video offers a wider perspective taking us to cities across the world.
All the reading texts are recorded.
A cross-reference to a definitive Grammar Reference at the end of the Student’s Book.
Once more the reading is backed up by a Discovery EducationTM video which offers a wider global perspective.

Speaking The productive part of the unit with the speaking lesson appears towards the end. It is important that students do not come into this activity without previous preparation. The speaking topic and task are based on the language of the preceding lessons. The tasks are therefore well prepared and with step-bystep guidance to help them.
Writing Successful production is guaranteed in the writing lesson. Students are given the opportunity to practise a wide variety of genres: emails, descriptions, blogs, biography, etc. The students prepare a writing task based on a model, using language they have seen and practised previously. A step-by-step approach guides them through the difficult writing process, with help with essential language. Look at Content helps them prepare before they start the task, which is clearly planned out for them in the Get Writing section.

Get it right!
common grammar and vocabulary errors made by Spanish speakers. All errors are taken from the Cambridge Learner Corpus.
The Say it right! sections deal with common pronunciation errors made by Spanish speakers.
The Cambridge English Corpus includes a database of several million Cambridge English exam scripts written by learners taking the exams. For Smart Planet, research was carried out on the language syllabus using the corpus with filters set to find only the errors made by Spanish Speakers. The result of this search was the starting point for the selection of errors to be focused on.

Clil CLIL pages offer teachers the option of teaching academic subjects from the school curriculum in English. There is one CLIL page for each unit.
Optional projects - one each term - offer students the opportunity to use their English in a freer and more extended way.

Test Generator The Test Generator lets teachers create their own test materials tailored to the needs of their students.
