VISION STATEMENT

Message

shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Blessed art thou, O Pastor Alberto Gulfan, President of Southern Asia Pacific Divison and Mr David Tan, ASI President of Southern Asia Pacific Region LORD: teach me thy statutes. with the Big Bible, a replica of the Bible that Mrs Ellen G. With my lips have I declared White held up with one hand for about two hours while she was in all the judgments of thy vision. mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches. I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word. (Psalm 119: 9 – 16). Every one of us would like to be ready when our Lord Jesus comes again to bring us home. We wish to be like Jesus Christ but we find it so difficult. We may behave like Jesus Christ when everything goes on smoothly. When things do not turn out according to our wishes, or someone stands in our way, our old self will surface immediately. Why? The only reason is we have left God’s words on the tables of stone (paper), and not have them in our hearts. End time believers struggle daily to find time to read and meditate His precepts and statutes because of our commitment to our modern living. We might have love riches more than His judgments and testimonies. Our world Church leaders have observed and realized the danger we are facing, so a programme has been put up to call the remnants of God to Follow the Bible. A website, www.followthebiblesda.com has been set up to encourage God’s people to read and meditate His Words daily. A special Bible reading guide is available on the said website as well. It will help us to read through the Bible once a year. I hope all Adventists will make a New Year resolution in 2009 to read the Bible daily with the help of the study guide. Let us follow our pioneers to spend time to search the truth in the Bible and to regain the name as ‘People of the Book’. All laities are more competent in giving Bible study to others. I am sure we will be blessed richly in our spiritual journey with the WORD as a lamp unto our feet, and a light unto our path.

AID TO FLOOD VICTIMS SHARED BY MRS LEONG FAI (RIGHT): Requested through the Pontian Church, the old lady (center) was one of the beneficiaries on Sep 10. She has poor eyesight and is childless. She has to depend on her housemates to help her around. After the flood, she moved out to live in Shu Zi’s home. Please pray for the Church’s efforts in doing more charity work.

TESTIMONY SENT THROUGH PR T JOHN: Mr Suresh and Mrs Kala married 12 years ago. They have two sons, Pavitheran (12 years old) and Heamachandran (7 years old). Kala and her family are from the Adventist background; however, Suresh is from the Hindu background. In Jun 2003, we (Pr & Mrs T John) were transferred to Banting Church, and got to know this family (Suresh and Kala). As we knew of Kala’s burden in bringing Suresh to believe in Jesus, we and the Women Ministry members prayed for this family fervently. Then in Jul 2008, they met with a terrifying accident. Kala had head injuries, and Suresh had his right thigh fractured. Pavitheran was with them during the incident but he escaped without injuries. From that moment onwards, Suresh believed that God is good and how He has saved their lives from that accident. On Oct 27, 2008, seven candidates were baptised, and Suresh was one of them! At the moment, Kala had recovered completely and Suresh is still in the recovery process. Please pray for Suresh’s speedy recovery, praise to the Lord!

CHILDREN PROGRAMME SHARED BY MS LYNIE JOHARI, CHILDREN MINISTRY CO-ORDINATOR FOR PENANG ADVENTIST HOSPITAL CHURCH: Held on Oct 25, the theme was "Tell a Child, Tell the World". There were five classes: Beginner, Kindergarten, Primary, Power Point and Corner Stone. 31 students and 28 teachers participated in this programme. Everyone displayed their individual talents either through songs, story-telling, memorizing of memory verses or playing musical instruments. I could see the potential these children (also active Pathfinders) have to become future leaders! MEDICAL AND DENTAL MISSION AMONG ORANG ASLI IN SEREMBAN SHARED BY MRS JANE YAP (BOTTOM, RIGHT): “Why do you want to do this Medical and Dental Mission?” This was the question of a few individuals at Jabatan Orang Asli in Seremban when Pr Minsun was applying for a permit to hold this activity; in which he replied gently, “Because we care.” With the aim to serve and provide medical and dental care to the 20 families (or more) of Orang Asli at Kampung Gadong in Seremban, the team of 12 volunteers from Penang and Kuala Lumpur which consisted of a Dentist, 2 Medical Doctors, 4 Student Nurses, 2 Nutritionists, 1 Registered Nurse, 1 Dental Assistant and lay volunteers, left PEM headquarters on Sunday morning – disregarding their Sunday activities and opting for a more noble way to spend it – and drove at least 70 km north to a village of Orang Asli in Kampung Gadong.

providing free medical consultation, giving away free medicines and dental checks for the said group of people. Thanks to the dedication of Pr Minsun and his team who have worked tirelessly to make this event a success – the team was able to serve all the families. Thanks also to Dr Samuel Tee, Dr Connie Tee and Ann from Penang, and also to Dr Veronica Lugah from Petaling Jaya English Church, and Penang Adventist Hospital who sponsored some of the dental solutions. Praise God for another opportunity to serve, as one of the volunteers said “it is all for God’s glory!” Yes indeed.

The event, which was held at the home of one of the “Asli” people from 9:30am to 5:30pm, was aimed at

~ Good ews from PEM Churches ~ FORMER UNION PRESIDENT, ELDER GEORGE JOHNSON, VISITS JOHOR BAHRU SHARED BY PR SAMUEL MONEY: Former Union President, Elder George Johnson, with his wife, Mernie, visited Johor Bahru for two weeks – Aug 20 to 31. During this short holiday here, Pr Johnson conducted a weekend of evangelistic meetings at the Johor Bahru (JB) Church, using the theme, “Man’s Journey of Life”. At the conclusion of which he baptized 34 souls. The evangelistic meetings were tied with the 52nd anniversary celebration organized by the JB Church. Pr Johnson also graced this occasion. More than 300 people attended the celebration. The present Union President, Pr Townend and his wife also attended the celebration. Mrs Catherine Auber, the only charter member present during the celebration, was presented with a plague to recognize her long standing service in the JB Church.

meeting held at the Majode Centre, JB, with 220 Indian members participating. Pr Johnson spoke at these camp meetings with the theme, “God’s People of All Ages,” and at the conclusion of which, he gave away more than 40 gold medals to men and women to give recognition for their services in the SDA Church, as well as to inspire them to do more for God in soul winning. Pr Johnson is now serving at the Central California Conference in the USA. He is about to retire soon but his heart is still in Southeast Asia. God willing, he desires to visit this area again next year. He has been active in the ASI conferences conducted by the Division. He has never failed to attend these ASI meetings. Mr Winston See, a businessman in JB, also is an active member of the ASI, and it was through his contacts that Pr Johnson was able to visit JB this year. Winston’s two boys were among those baptized by Pr Johnson at the conclusion of his evangelistic series in JB.

The following weekend, Aug 29 to 31, Pr Johnson spoke at the combined Indian Churches Camp

SINGAPORE OUTREACH SHARED BY MS HENNES H LOBENDEN: From Aug 29 to Sep 1, 23 young people and 3 Youth Advisors of Petaling Jaya English Church came out of their comfort zones and drove almost 400km to Singapore to conduct an outreach ministry. The Petaling Jaya Adventist Youth (PJAY), presented a mini-concert at Maranatha and Balistier SDA Churches respectively. In the past, the group has visited and was an instrument used by God to bless other Churches through singing and testimonies around PEM including those in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor, Melaka, Perak and Penang; however, this was the first time that the group was doing it outside of the country. This outreach was planned early this year and the youth had put in a lot of effort by practising every Friday nights and Saturday afternoons. The purpose of this outreach is to strengthen the relationships among the youth in other Churches and to encourage the youth to be involved in Church activities through music ministry. The programmes in both Churches included a choir repertoire of 16 songs, mostly written by Sally De Ford, prayerfully chosen by the choir’s conductress and pianist, Mrs Ellen Andrews and Ms Lola Marissa. Mrs Jane Yap, one of our Youth Advisors, preached a sermon in Maranatha Church. Testimonies from some of the youth were also shared. The choir presentation was a combination of duets, solos, male and ladies choruses. From this trip, we formed a special name for our choir, "PJ Miracle Choir"! One of our choir members accidentally lost his passport, but 30 minutes later, after much prayers, his passport was returned to him! This experience had taught everyone to surrender completely to God and to trust Him to take control of all our worries and problems. Someone in the choir said, “I thought I would come here to be used by God to bless others but in the end, I was the one who was blessed!” Praise God!

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Matthew 5:9, NIV.

~ Testimony & Good ews from PEM Churches ~ JESUS NEVER FAILS SHARED BY MS AGNES WONG (PICTURE BELOW, LEFT): It has been more than 5 years we have stayed in Petaling Jaya. Working life was tiring and stressful; thus, we intended to move back to Kuantan (my hometown). However, the economic situation was not so encouraging then, but by faith we decided to do it because we believed that God will make a way for us as long as we are faithful to Him. In the beginning, I tried to look for a 5-days week job by myself but it was in vain. Later on, I went to the employment agency and the agent told me that it was very difficult to get a 5-days week job in the town area, unless I am willing to work in the industrial area which was quite far from my house. As I do not drive, it also became another barrier to me. But, I did not give up and continued to pray earnestly and asked God to open the way for me. About 2 months later on, the agency sms me to go for an interview. When I reached the office, the manager in-charge was an old friend of mine (a Christian too!) and I was then offered a 5-days week job. My next problem was the transportation, surprisingly though I did not worry at all because I believed since He provided me the job, surely my Heavenly Father will make a way for the transportation as well! On my first day, my manager sent me home and when I told her about my problem, she was very kind in arranging for the company driver to send me home daily. I was overjoyed, thanks to God for the perfect arrangement! Hallelujah! It has been 3 months since I worked in this company. My colleagues are also friendly and helpful. I am now much happier as compared to my previous job! At the same time, my husband, Benjamin (picture above, right), was also offered a 5-days week job by the same agency. It was a miracle as well because the technical line usually requires a person to work either 5.5 days or 6 days a week. His boss is also a very nice person. Not only He provided us with great jobs but also blessed us with friendly, helpful and good neighbours! We are truly grateful for His abundant provisions. Once again, we would like to give thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ for His grace is sufficient for us, and His mercy never fails. Just come to him boldly and pray and trust in Him completely. He will open the way for you! AMEN!

CHILDREN MINISTRY TRAINING SHARED BY MRS LEONG FAI: From Nov 1-2, 25 Church members attended this training held in Johor Baru. They learnt how to decorate classrooms, prepare visual aids, handiworks and balloon modeling.

EVANGELISTIC MEETING AT KLANG INDIAN CHURCH SHARED BY MRS SHANTHI JOHNATHAN: Pr Samuel Money conducted the meetings from Nov 20-23. We carried out health screenings and had refreshments after the sessions. The Church members brought a few non-Christians to attend the meetings. They were excited when they heard the health messages, and they continued to attend the series. One family committed and accepted the Lord Jesus as their Saviour! At the end of the meetings, three souls were baptized at the Petaling Jaya English Church by Pr Samuel Money. Among the three candidates, one candidate was from the Hindu background. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the LORD, all the Church members, Pr Samuel Money and PEM for supporting this event. Please pray for us as we continue with the LORD's work. ~ Good ews from PEM Churches ~ SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAMME AT SMK SRI SENTOSA: The PEM Health team led by Mrs Jane Yap was invited to conduct a health programme on the subject of Peer Pressure Reversal among the Form 3-5 students of SMK Sri Sentosa along Jalan Kuchai Lama. The peer pressure reversal workshop entitled “I was forced to do it!” was conducted in order to make the young people be aware of the effects of negative peer pressure such as smoking, drinking, cheating, and even pre-marital sex. They went through a series of role plays on how to say “NO” to negative peer pressure, drunken driving tests and exhibits on effects of smoking on health. A 30minute lecture on “How to say NO negative peer pressure” was effective in bringing to their minds the effects of the negative choices that each one of them makes. This kind of programme is effective in building positive behaviour among teenagers who are at risk of being swayed to negative influences of their peers.

CHAROBIX AND COOKING DEMONSTRATION BY MS FLORENCE OF KLANG INDIAN CHURCH SHARED BY MS SHANTHI SUBRAMANIAM: Every morning from 7:00am to 8:00am, there will be charobix at Taman Chi Liung, Klang. The response was quite slow in the beginning, but now, by God’s grace, we have 15 active women in our group! We held a successful healthy cooking demonstration on Nov 9 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm in one of the charobix student’s house. Ms Florence and Ms Letchumi were the demonstrators on how to bake a vegetarian cake, make beetroot jelly, vegetables pejal and white carrot lime juice yogurt salad. After the cooking demonstration, we continued on with a charobix session! Thank God for this successful event. Please pray for us as we continue to reach out.

ADVENTIST COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE-PETALING JAYA BRANCH (ACC-PJ) BUFFET LUNCH SHARED BY MRS JANE YAP: After months of planning, the first ever ACC-PJ buffet lunch was served on Sep 14, Sunday. Scores of guests from Petaling Jaya English Church attended with their family, friends and loved ones, with a few notable members from Kuala Lumpur English Church. Tables were arrayed and loaded with delicacies from every part of the world. The menu was wholesome, from Indonesia we had the Gado-Gado laced with the distinct peanut sauce. Tom Yam fried rice was also on the table, with the complementary taste-buds tickling soup to represent the Thai flavours. Who could have missed the aroma of Chapatti Right next to the accompanying bright yellow lentil dhal that left guests with absolute satisfaction! Thosai was also taken with chutney to give guests variety. Chinese-style stir fried noodles encumbered with vegetables and tofu to enrich it with nutrients and goodness was also served. The vegetarian burger was a hit, Jimmy and Miriam worked flat out to serve the throng that wanted to have a bite of the augmented burger, dressed with lettuce, tomatoes and the creamy cashew cheese. On the desserts table were the black glutinous rice hedged with fresh mango slices and dripped with coconut milk. Fruit salad, made from an assortment of exotic fruits drenched in natural yoghurt was also there to provide the vitamins and minerals. The atmosphere was jovial with people’s excitement to taste new cuisines. With 56 guests lining for food, there was no better opportunity to fellowship and share about healthy lifestyle drawn from all-plant based diet. Many people see vegetarian diet as restrictive and monotonous, but after attending the buffet lunch, many people were convinced that vegetarian diet is vast, nutritious and tantalizing. We at ACC and ACC-PJ would like to thank all the guests for the tremendous support; we also cordially extend our invitation for our up-coming buffets and other activities too!

Praise be to the Lord, to God our Saviour, who daily bears our burdens. Psalm 68:19, NIV.

Pr Abel Bana (above with Enoch Chai, a concert participant) was the guest speaker. In Pr Abel’s speech, he told the children, as they continue to learn and gain knowledge, do keep a few pointers in mind:-1. Learn something from everyone. 2. Learn to be good at something. 3. Learn to see the spiritual side of life. 4. Learn that knowledge is not a throne. KEEP LEARNING CHILDREN! In his closing remark, he quoted the Bible, “But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them.” 2 Timothy 3:14.

WHOLE NIGHT PRAYER MEETING SHARED BY MRS SHANTHI JOHNATHAN: The Klang Indian Church believers organized a whole night prayer meeting on Nov 25. The main motive of this programme was to uplift the spiritual life in our daily christian life. We shared our testimonies and had special prayers. As most of our time we are very busy with our own schedules, the Lord requests us in Matt 26:40 -- "Then HE came to the disciples and found them asleep, and said to Peter, "What, could you not watch with ME one hour?" Apostle Paul also encourages us in 1 Thess 5:17 -- "Pray without ceasing."

FAREWELL SHARED BY MS JENNIFER DEVADAS: We thank the Lord Jesus Christ for having faithful youths involved in the Lord's ministry of the Shah Alam Church. Ms Angeline Khalib (2nd from left) is very active in all the Church activities. Now, she has to leave for her studies in Alor Setar, Kedah. May the Lord keep and bless her as she continues on with her future!

The place was filled with people representing each one of their clubs from the youngest Adventurer to the oldest Master Guide.

KL YOUTH ALIVE SHARED BY MRS JANE YAP: 120 young people and facilitators gathered in the National Park in Shah Alam during the weekend of Oct 24-27 for the first-ever Klang Valley Youth Alive organized by the Klang Valley Youth Alive Committee, comprising of 8 young people and 2 KL young pastors. With the theme “Transformed!” the group session consisted of a spiritual talk on the 10-Commandments by a Spirit-filled speaker, Pr Abel Bana. Health topics on Sexually Transmitted Diseases, How to Enjoy long and quality Life, My Body as God’s Temple, You are what you Eat and Integrity – were bridged to the spiritual talks. The two facilitators from Thailand and Philippines, Mr Marvin Marcelino – a Guidance Councilor from Bangkok Adventist International School, and Mr Joe Rey Dayahan, the energetic Youth Alive expert, guided the young people into different Family Group Sessions. The highlight of the event was a drama directed by Ms Rose Solano, an export from El Salvador, entitled “The Passion of Christ,” where it left the young audience mesmerized and teary-eyed as they were touched by the love of Christ depicted in the play. During the commitment service, 20 young people requested for Bible studies, 5 wanted to be baptized during the next 6 months, 9 decided to commit one year of their lives to become a student missionary and 45 of them committed to serve the Lord through the Church. Praise God for this wonderful opportunity of exalting His name!

It was a wonderful privilege to come and witness the whole programme, the happiness and enthusiasm in their hearts to serve the Lord was very much apparent and it really inspired me to give more of myself to the Lord. We were so blessed because PEM youth Director, Pr James Edward, was there with us, also, Pr Terrance Sim, Executive Secretary of PEM, followed by all our very supportive and dedicated Master Guides such as; MG Jane Yap, MG Robert Augustin and MG Lee Yow Han, MG Ellen Andrews were seen taking charge of the whole programme. The most awaited moment has come when Ms Tabby Andrews (right), Ms Lydia Tan (center) and myself were invested into Master Guides. The term, Master Guide, strikes a number of meaning for different people; in my case, becoming a Master Guide does not just mean getting a ‘promotion’ or a ‘name’ and privileges such as the authority to sign off class requirements; instead, to me, becoming a Master Guide means that you are accepting the responsibility of becoming a leader with God as your guide! Although it took me 3 years to complete my Master Guide requirements, I did not regret it. It comes with great responsibility but with God’s help, I praise Him that I was able to complete it all. Coming over to the Petaling Jaya English Church was not a mistake, indeed, I was blessed to be given an opportunity to use my talent in serving the Lord by teaching the children in the Church. Above all, we are so blessed to have a very passionate, determined and persevering Pathfinder Director and Youth Advisor, Mrs Jane Yap, and her dedicated and supportive husband Mr Allan Yap. I praise God for the successful event and for giving us all these wonderful people!

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3, NIV.

VOLUNTEER MISSIONARY SHARED BY MS LYNIE JOHARI: From Nov 1-3, a few nurses from Penang Adventist Hospital went for the trip to Siem Reap, Cambodia, and visited the orphans at Wat Preah Yesu Children's Home and Cambodia Adventist School-Kantrok. It was a wonderful school (and home) for the orphans. We managed to volunteer with other volunteers from America and Australia to teach the children for 3 days. The testimonies of the orphanage children really touched our hearts and they reminded us again of how great our God is!

KUALA SELANGOR MINI HEALTH EXPO SHARED BY MS ROSE SOLANO: On Nov 23, the folks in Kuala Selangor felt the love and care of the Adventist Community Services. Adventist Community Health Centre (ACC) team of volunteers (including those from Kuala Selangor) were very busy setting up the stations for the Mini Health Expo at 9:00am! We had health screenings, cooking and hydrotherapy demonstrations and the drunken driving test. At the conclusion of all activities, 94 participants had gone though the health screening. Among them were 64 non-Christians. The spirit of God had led the day in a tremendous way and no hitches were encountered. Pr Jacob John had the honour of thanking all the volunteers and offered a prayer to thank God for the marvellous opportunity to witness through health ministry.

KLANG INDIAN CHURCH CONTEMPLATES ON BECOMING THE 3RD ADVENTIST COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE (ACC) BRANCH SHARED BY MS ROSE SOLANO: Upon the request made by the Church through sister Florence, Klang Indian Church’s energetic Health Leader, the ACC team, which consists of Mrs Jane Yap, Mr Osward Manungo and myself, set its foot on Saturday to give training to the Church members on how to conduct health activities in order to reach out to its surrounding community. In the afternoon, the team led the members into some practical ways of conducting simple health activities, starting with a power-point presentation on “Step-byStep in Health Evangelism” followed by training on taking BMI, Waist Girth and Blood Pressure including some simple health counseling. As Florence puts it: “this training is a good starting point for us; hopefully next year we are able to conduct a mini health expo in a shopping mall near our Church, and through that more people will be brought to Christ.”

NEWSTART GOES TO PUBLIC BANK EMPLOYEES ON NOV 14 SHARED BY MRS JANE YAP: A series of lectures on health, vegan cooking, hydrotherapy demostration and CHAROBIX exercise were presented to almost 30 participants. Indeed it was a great experience for the health team. We pray that through this “Healthy Lifestyle Programme for Corporate Companies”, ACC will be able to reach out to more people and bring them to Christ.

Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. Proverbs 3:7, NIV.

It

was a great loss to our Churches in Peninsular Malaysia as Pr James Wah passed away peacefully on Nov 22 at about 9:30pm. He was well loved and respected by Church members and fellow colleagues. Those who acquainted with him will surely miss his words of encouragement and light moments with jokes. Pr James Wah began his ministry as an Assistant Chaplain in Penang Adventist Hospital in 1954. He retired as the Head of Chaplain Department in the same hospital in 1993. In between, he served as pastors in Singapore, Kota Kinabaru and Ipoh for about 7 years. Pr James Wah, who is faithful, humble, loving and caring, had greatly impacted many followers of Jesus Christ. I personally respect him because (1) He served God where he was needed, not where he wanted, (2) He retire from his employment 15 years ago but he never retired from his ministry until his last breath, (3) He was not bothered being moved up or down his career ladder, and (4) He raised up two sons who love the Lord and are active in the Church. In one of the memorial services, Dr Danny Oh said it right; Pr James Wah could have many good reasons to retire in the USA like other pastors do, and enjoy the fellowship with his buddies there. However, in the last 15 years, he was as active as any other Church pastors in visitation, Bible study and preaching. In 1978, he was appointed the head of Penang Adventist Hospital. In 1981, he was put into the account office as a general clerk. Two years later, he was sent to Sabah to serve as a Church pastor there. He accepted all these postings and faithfully carried out his duties without a word of complaint. Nothing in this world could shake his faith in God. This is the spirit all God’s true servants should possess. Pr James Wah was a true servant of God. He could surely proclaim as Apostle Paul, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” (2 Tim. 4:7). There is a crown of righteousness waiting for him on that day. May we vow to witness his crowning on that day when our Lord Jesus comes again.

~ About Seventh-day Adventist ~

The 28 Fundamental Beliefs of Seventh-day Adventist (Source: www.seventh-dayadventist.com)

22. Christian Behaviour:

We are called to be a godly people who think, feel, and act in harmony with the

principles of heaven. For the Spirit to recreate in us the character of our Lord we involve ourselves only in those things which will produce Christ-like purity, health, and joy in our lives. This means that our amusement and entertainment should meet the highest standards of Christian taste and beauty. While recognizing cultural differences, our dress is to be simple, modest, and neat, befitting those whose true beauty does not consist of outward adornment but in the imperishable ornament of a gentle and quiet spirit. It also means that because our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit, we are to care for them intelligently. Along with adequate exercise and rest, we are to adopt the most healthful diet possible and abstain from the unclean foods identified in the Scriptures. Since alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and the irresponsible use of drugs and narcotics are harmful to our bodies, we are to abstain from them as well. Instead, we are to engage in whatever brings our thoughts and bodies into the discipline of Christ, who desires our wholesomeness, joy, and goodness. Rom. 12:1, 2; 1 John 2:6; Eph.5:1-21; Phil. 4:8; 2 Cor. 10:5; 6:14-7:1; 1 Peter 3:1-4; 1 Cor. 6:19, 20; 10:31; Lev. 11:1-47; 3 John 2.)

22. Marriage and the Family:

Marriage was divinely established in Eden and affirmed by Jesus to be a

lifelong union between a man and a woman in loving companionship. For the Christian a marriage commitment is to God as well as to the spouse, and should be entered into only between partners who share a common faith. Mutual love, honour, respect, and responsibility are the fabric of this relationship, which is to reflect the love, sanctity, closeness, and permanence of the relationship between Christ and His Church. Regarding divorce, Jesus taught that the person who divorces a spouse, except for fornication, and marries another, commits adultery. Although some family relationships may fall short of the ideal, marriage partners who fully commit themselves to each other in Christ may achieve loving unity through the guidance of the Spirit and the nurture of the Church. God blesses the family and intends that its members shall assist each other toward complete maturity. Parents are to bring up their children to love and obey the Lord. By their example and their words they are to teach them that Christ is a loving disciplinarian, ever tender and caring, who wants them to become members of His body, the family of God. Increasing family closeness is one of the earmarks of the final gospel message. Gen. 2:18-25; Matt. 19:3-9; John 2:1-11; 2 Cor. 6:14; Eph. 5:21-33; Matt. 5:31, 32; Mark 10:11, 12; Luke 16:18; 1 Cor. 7:10, 11; Ex. 20:12; Eph. 6:1-4; Deut. 6:5-9; Prov. 22:6; Mal. 4:5, 6.)
