On behalf of CTT Yorkshire District, the Yorkshire Cycling Federation would like to welcome all competitors, supporters, families and friends to this scenic, although somewhat hilly corner of Yorkshire. Best wishes to all the riders – we hope you have a successful day. Foreword With a full field of 240 riders, hill climbs are in rude health. Which is more than you can say for hill climbers, who remain an emaciated, ill-looking breed, with translucent skin and sunken eyes. This year, the championship returns to Jackson Bridge. It pitches in at four and a half minutes, with a hairpin bend, drystone walls and a painful drag up the side of the moorland above the Kirklees countryside. It’s technical and asks tricky questions of the fixed fraternity. It’s long enough for the roadmen and whippet-thin testers, but short enough for the explosive specialists. The ‘home’ club, Huddersfield Star Wheelers, were multiple team champions in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with Granville Sydney leading the charge. Granville possessed the ability to escape the imprisonment of the body and mind and float upwards, propelled by anaesthetising determination. The winner each year on Jackson Bridge takes home the Granville Sydney Memorial Trophy, engraved with the names of Chris Boardman, Jim Henderson, Matt Clinton and Dan Evans: an antigravity almanac etched in filigree. The 1994 National was shaken by a winter storm barrelling through the night before, leaving behind a damp surface and a lusty tailwind. Jeff Wright took his only title with a course record of 3.49 on a 58” gear. It won’t be threatened this weekend due to a few tweaks in the course. The much missed Pete Longbottom rode his last climb, finishing thirteenth. What can we hope for this year? Another Yorkshire belter; legions of climbers spurred on by a gladiatorial crowd; cowbells and cheers, and a momentous battle between Dan Evans, Tejvan Pettinger, Adam Kenway and Matt Clinton, with Maryka Senemma looking for her hat trick, Lynn Hamel chasing a fifth title, and Hayley Simmonds threatening. Above all, expect a groundswell of optimism rolling upwards as the race unfolds, safe in the knowledge that the passing of the scratch rider means the season is done and everyone can relax for at least a week, before digging out the winter hack and fighting the forces of winter in the neverending battle for fitness and form. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

He was also National Hill Climb Champion on Mow Cop in 1952 EVENT HQ: Oil Can Café, The Carding Shed, Butt Lane, HEPWORTH HD9 1AF Open from 09:00 Don’t forget clocks GO BACK 1 hour early Sunday morning!! 3

Location: Jackson Bridge is located on the A616 Sheffield to Huddersfield road, in what has become known as Last of the Summer Wine Country after the popular TV series – many of the scenes were filmed around here. The village is located approx.1.2 miles south of New Mill, and 7.4 miles south of Huddersfield. The Red Lion pub (HD9 7HB) on the A616 is located in between the climb, to the east of the road, and the HQ at the Oil Can Café, Hepworth (HD9 1AF) to the west Nearest main line railway station is at Huddersfield, with frequent First Transpennine, and Northern services from Leeds and Manchester. There is a nearer station at Brockholes, served by Northern trains on the Huddersfield – Barnsley – Sheffield line, but Sunday services are infrequent. First runs an hourly bus service (310) on Sundays between Huddersfield and Hepworth – this runs via Holmfirth and Scholes, and takes about 40 minutes. Buses terminate at Hepworth. Departures are at 10 minutes past the hour, from Huddersfield Bus Station – about a 10 minute walk from the Railway Station. Course V9912/1 Tinker’s Monument Grid reference for start: SE 165 075 Start on Staley Royd Road, Jackson Bridge, 2 yards south of small boundary wall and 10 yards north of telegraph pole marked J8C, and 120 yards east of A616 New Mill to Stocksbridge Road at Jackson Bridge. Proceed to the top of the hill via Tender Hill, Scar Hole Lane, to finish directly in line with north end of rear wall of sole house at top of Scar Hole Lane, and approximately 40 yards from junction with Intake Lane. The gradient varies from 1 in 5, to a short dip before the final rise to the line. Approx distance: 1590 yards. Average gradient 11%. From Start to Commentator is 0.49 miles – a further 0.41 miles to the line! Note: If you have ridden the Jackson Bridge climb previously you will find that the original start and finish points have been moved slightly. The new start is approx. 70 yds further down the hill – this gives more room for the Timekeepers, and for spectators walking up the hill. The finish has been moved 10 yds down the hill to allow the timekeepers a better view of riders approaching the finish. 4

ROAD CLOSURE: The course will be closed from below the start to beyond the finish, and on Butterley Lane from 09.30 until 15.30. During this period no vehicles, other than local residents, and emergency services, will be allowed access. Riders will not be allowed on the course, except at their allotted start time, once the event has started. Riders who have finished will not be allowed to ride back down the hill – follow sign-posted route from top of hill back to the HQ. 5

EVENT HQ is the Oil Can Café, at the CARDING SHED, Dobroyd Mills, Hepworth, HOLMFIRTH HD9 1AF The HQ will be open from 09:00. Changing facilities, signing-on, body numbers, result boards will be located here. Food, drinks, meals (&bar) are available here. Toilets for competitors (Porta-loos) will be located in the corner of the car-park – no access to toilets inside café until time of presentation, unless having Lunch. Presentation of Awards by Guest of Honour, Brian Robinson – is expected to take place from approx. 15:10 hrs.

CAR PARKING – FOR COMPETITORS ONLY There is a large field adjacent to the HQ – please park considerately in order to maximise the space. The use of Turbo-Trainers will not be permitted in this area. There is to be NO PARKING anywhere else in the vicinity of the HQ, on the approach road, or any of the roads in the village. Please keep out of the bus-turning circle at the top of Hepworth village. The roads are quite narrow, and there is a regular bus service on Butt Lane (Huddersfield – Hepworth 310). 6

TAKE EXTREME CARE WHEN CROSSING A616 between HQ and the START. This road can be quite busy at times. Please drive with consideration for other motorists in the area of the HQ – The Oil Can is open for their regular Sunday Lunch customers, and visitors – not everyone is associated with the Championship event. Some Additional Parking is available on the west side of the A616, near the Red Lion, but not directly in front of the building, or on the opposite side of road. NB: Yorkshire DC Local Regulations do not permit the use of TurboTrainers within 150 yds of any occupied property.

SPECTATOR PARKING & TURBO-TRAINERS A large field is available for spectator parking, and for competitors who wish to use turbo-trainers, on Butterley Lane – see over page for map/directions. There is no charge for using the car park, but there will be a Honesty Box at the entrance for donations – monies collected will be donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. As with car park at the HQ, there may be delays at times – they both have narrow entrances – please be patient, and allow marshals time to direct cars. Snacks & Drinks on the Hill:

Al Fresco Mobile Catering Mike Travis 07544 208017 [email protected] 7
