PORTRAIT PAINTING with JC English 9:30am - 12:30pm

Explore bookbinding techniques such as folding, sewing, cutting, and covering. Students will produce a Japanese slab book and a hand-sewn signature bound book, plus the skills to create books at home. 1-day workshop: Oct 13 Fee: $100 / $90 members + Materials Fee: $30

Learn to paint a portrait from a live, clothed model in oil, pastel, or drawing media. Fundamentals such as getting a likeness, good color and design, value unity, and creating a basic flesh palette are stressed. ALL skill levels are welcome. 10 classes: Oct 1 - Dec 10; no class October 8 Fee: $390 / $351 members + Model Fee: $60

FAMILY CLAY DAY with Jeanne N. Carreau 1:00 - 3:30pm (Ages 3 - 11 + one adult) A one-day-clay family experience! Have fun and relax while working together with clay. Participants will make and glaze two projects, such as a mug and a mask, that will be fired and picked up at a later date. ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR with Sarah Mironchuk 10:00am - 3:30pm (half-hour break from 1-1:30) Through group collaboration and brainstorming, we’ll create a fictitious company and design a logo and materials to promote the business. 1-day workshop: Oct 27 Fee: $125 / $113 members + Lab Fee: $10

EXPRESSIVE PASTELS with Elaine Finsilver 2:00 - 6:30pm (half-hour break from 4-4:30) Emphasis on expression, using pastels to create work that represents mood and feelings. Students will be working from photos supplied by the instructor or students can bring their own photos. 1-day workshop: Oct 27 Fee: $80 / $72 members

JEWELRY MAKING with Mary Louise Gladstone 2:00 - 8:30pm (half-hour break from 5:30-6) Participants will be introduced to a variety of techniques, components, and tools used to create jewelry. Materials to include Swarovski and Czech crystals, fresh water and glass pearls, glass beads, semi-precious stones and beads, copper, brass and silver-plated wire, and findings. Techniques to include stringing, wire wrapping, braiding, and coldconnecting with jump-rings, wire, and epoxy. Participants will create several jewelry pieces including earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. (Please note this is not a jewelry REPAIR class. However, if you have a favorite bead necklace that has broken and would like to repurpose it, please feel free to bring it to class. And, due to the high cost of most metals, we will not be using gold or silver.)

S U N D A Y DRAWING IN COLORED PENCIL with Paula Madawick 9:00am - 4:00pm (half-hour break from 12-12:30) Colored pencils are a rich, flexible medium. This workshop provides an exciting and innovative environment for the exploration of non-toxic, water-soluble colored pencils. The fundamentals and technical aspects of rendering in color will be explained. We will investigate line, color and space through interactive, group-oriented and individual drawing exercises designed for expression. Emphasis is placed on developing your application of the medium. This is class is suitable for students with some drawing experience. 1-day workshop: Oct 14 Fee: $130 / $117 members 5

EXPRESSIVE PAINTING with Lisa Taliano 10:00am - 12:00pm Learn how to have fun and express yourself with paint while understanding the fundamentals of design by using examples from art history. WEB DESIGN with Lisa Taliano 1:00 - 3:00pm A beginners class where participants will create their own website, learning basic HTML and CSS using Dreamweaver. Instruction will be centered around effective information design, dynamic applications, and web aesthetics. BASIC DRAWING with Robin Tedesco 7:00 - 9:30pm Awaken your love of drawing! Students will begin with the process of “seeing” the objects, working in line with pencil. Then, students will learn tone with charcoal, and explore the effect of creating 3 dimensions on a 2 dimensional surface. INTRO TO 3D CHARACTER ANIMATION with C.A. MacFinn 7:00 - 9:00pm 3D Computer Animation is an exploding art! We see it all around us - at the movies, in video games, television, the internet, and our cellular phones. This course covers the basics of how to bring a character to life using a 3D computer animation software called Blender, which is a Free & Open Source Software. WATERCOLOR with Jackie Meier 10:00am - 12:00pm This class will explore the medium of watercolor, one of the oldest painting mediums. Its unique properties and limitations will be discussed, while exploring the technical aspects of paint handling, color mixing, and creating a flat wash. Creating a painting from start to finish will be covered, including idea development, subject matter, composition, and execution. Whether you are interested in watercolor for sketching, keeping a visual diary, or creating finished paintings, this class is appropriate. FICTION WRITING with Pei-Ling Lue, Editor at One Story Magazine 7:00 - 9:00pm This class will use lectures and in-class writing exercises to teach the craft of fiction and to help students hone their writing skills. The goal of this class is to complete at least one short story or novel excerpt. Learn how to critically read other stories and give honest and respectful feedback. Short stories will be assigned each week that will showcase how professional authors develop characters and use plot, setting, and language in their work. 11 classes: Oct 2 - Dec 11 Fee: $242 / $218 members

MIXED MEDIA with Donna Ross 7:00 - 9:30pm In this course, students will learn what inspires and motivates us to make art, working in a variety of mediums and applications. AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH TO ART HISTORY with Jackie Lavoie Valenzuela 10:00am - 12:00pm Have you ever wondered why certain pieces make it into a museum? In this alternative History of Western Art course, we will cover the ancient world to the development of modern art through our own experimentation and discussion. We will read about and discuss a new historical period in each class, view films, and create our own historically inspired pieces to better understand the development of each period. 10 classes: Oct 3 - Dec 12; no class Nov 21 Fee: $260 / $234 members

GLASS CREATIONS: KILN-FORMED GLASS (Fusing & Slumping) with Martha Wingate Taylor 10:30am - 1:30pm Create beautiful glass art for your coffee table - a colorful glass plate, trivet, coasters, or a picture frame. Students will learn how to cut flat glass, arrange it into a design of their own, and fuse and slump (shape) the completed pieces in a kiln. All students will gain a fundamental understanding of glass compatibility, and a solid foundation for working with Bullseye glass. Get to know the kiln environment and shelf preparation, and go home with a variety of beautiful glasswork. No glass working experience is required; beginners welcome. FUSED GLASS: JEWELRY & GIFTS with Martha Wingate Taylor 10:30am - 1:30pm Design and create your own glass jewelry and beautiful gifts, from glass coasters and wine stoppers to glass decorated picture frames, letter openers, and boxes. Learn how to cut and prepare the glass and arrange it into their own design, which will be fused in the kiln. Use dichroic and irid glass for dramatic effect, and learn the preparation and use of copper inclusions. All students will gain a fundamental understanding of glass compatibility and a solid foundation for working with Bullseye glass. BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION with Dolores R. Santoliquido 7:00 - 9:30pm Plants and flowers display a wonderful variety of form, structure and complexity to inspire the artist's desire to create. This course will stress teaching the basic skills required for drawing botanicals, emphasizing form and function, botanical perspective, foreshortening and correct lighting of subject matter. Participants will learn to accurately render the beauty of floral subjects with particular attention given to balance, rhythm, contrast and composition. Good painting begins with good drawing skills. Working with a variety of nude models, students will develop well-structured drawings with an emphasis on accuracy of pose, balance, and proportion. HISTORY FILM PROJECT with Iman Nur 7:00 - 9:00pm

MEMOIR WRITING with Susan Hodara 7:00 - 9:00pm

Participants get an inside view of how successful films are made from the ground up, using the documentary format. Participants will tell their own story, exploring viewpoints through interviews, photographs, and other personal history documents, art, and artifacts. Activities include reflective writing assignments, recording narration script, and editing techniques using Apple software. By the end of the course, participants will have reached an advanced understanding of how to get raw ideas into a film as quickly and economically as possible, using “shortcuts” and user-friendly software to create personal films, each 5-7 minutes in length. Are you compelled to write about the transforming events in your life? Do you want to record stories from your past? Are you haunted by vivid memories and drawn to explore the circumstances that surround them? Whether you are a first-time writer or seeking response to ongoing work, this class provides a supportive environment where you will read your writing aloud each week and receive constructive feedback. THREE EASY & PROFESSIONAL EARRING STYLES with Mary Partlan of White Branch Designs 10:00am - 12:00pm Have you ever looked at a pair of earrings and wished you could make them? Come learn three professional techniques, used in many earring styles. Materials used are copper, sterling silver, and beads. Class 1: Use a continuous piece of wire to make each earring. Students will make a practice pair with copper and a second pair with sterling silver and beads. Class 2: Lean the simple and useful techniques of wire wrapping. Make a pair of earrings with copper and beads. Class 3: Build on your skills from class 2 and add jump rings to the mix. Use chain and beads to make a pair of sterling silver earrings. Class 4: (Only open to students who have taken classes 2 and 3.) Use your own design and make a pair of earrings based on the skills learned in previous classes. Learn what pH neutral and archival paper is, what adhesive and glue is; also learn what constitutes copyright infringement. Students will spend the first five weeks of this course learning Adobe Photoshop, including selections, layers, masks, paths, filters, using type, and more!
