The regular meeting of the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) was held on Thursday, December 1, 2016, in the Board Room of the Education Centre, Aurora at 7:15 p.m. with SEAC Chair L. Aversa presiding and the following members present: Members:

DECLARATION OF CONFLICT OF INTEREST SEAC Chair L. Aversa asked any trustee who has a direct personal interest or direct or indirect pecuniary interest in any matter being discussed during the meeting to state their conflict and the nature thereof. No conflicts were declared by trustees at this time. MOMENT OF REFLECTION On behalf of SEAC representative M. Taylor, SEAC Chair L. Aversa presented the Moment of Reflection entitled “Advice from a Tree” by Ilan Shamir. A copy will be provided to Committee members for information. Robert MacAlpine will deliver the Moment of Reflection at the January 12, 2017 SEAC meeting.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS SEAC Chair L. Aversa announced Down Syndrome Association of York Region representative K. Stewart and Community Living Newmarket/Aurora District member J. DeMartino are leaving the SEAC. Certificates of recognition were presented for their time, dedication and commitment to the Committee. STUDENT VOICE PRESENTATION There was no Student Voice presentation provided at this time. ANNUAL HOLIDAY STUDENT MUSICAL PRESENTATIONS Superintendent, Student Services S. Logue welcomed and introduced a 19-year-old student from the Autism program at Langstaff Secondary School accompanied by Langstaff Secondary School Educational Assistant S. Ho. Also in attendance was Superintendent of Schools M. Cohen. The student introduced himself and sang Stand By Me and Count on Me. He wished the Committee a Happy Holiday and Happy New Year. Superintendent Logue greeted Sir William Mulock Secondary School Teacher C. Pietrantonio and an acapella student singing group known as ETM. They sang a few musical numbers for the Committee. All singers and staff gathered for a photograph for the next Student Services Special Edition Newsletter. SEAC Chair L. Aversa thanked all presenters for their outstanding musical performances. SPECIAL EDUCATION PLAN UPDATE Principal of Student Services K. Diakiw noted there were no updates on the Special Education Plan. (*)4.

STUDENT SERVICES REPORT Superintendent, Student Services S. Logue thanked all SEAC members for their involvement and support of students with special needs throughout the year and their continuous work as an Advisory Committee. She also thanked Administrative Assistant A. Ballard for organizing the Annual Holiday event. Superintendent Logue wished everyone a wonderful holiday season on behalf of SEAC Vice-Chair L. Ziraldo who was at the Council for Exceptional Children Conference. S. Logue will be attending the conference to celebrate the Teacher of the Year Award. This year’s recipient is Richmond Green Secondary School Special Education Teacher L. Pyke. Superintendent Logue provided other updates to Committee members on;   

the Safe Haven Gala, SEAC member attendance at the Quest Conference, and staff announcements and retirements.

She wished everyone a wonderful holiday season and thanked Board staff and the SEAC for continuing to support students with special needs throughout the year. Superintendent, Curriculum and Instructional Services H. Sears shared insight into a three-year collaboration with Student Services regarding a multi-team project for an oral language assessment tool for kindergarten students. She stated the project builds educator competency and advocacy to support the oral development of young learners. She shared a video which summarized the oral language assessment tool pilot project and a parent’s perspective on the assessment tool. In year one of the pilot project four schools were involved followed by twenty-six schools inyear two. The goal is to have the program implemented in all schools in the fall of 2017. The results from the pilot program indicate an increase in student oral language development, students feeling better about themselves as learners and students being able to self-advocate. Principal, Student Service W. Swaine mentioned the November/December 2016 edition of the Student Services Special Edition Newsletter has been distributed.

Associate Director of Education, Leadership and Learning K. Friedman highlighted the ongoing collaborative partnerships and leadership with Student Services, Curriculum and Instructional Services and Inclusive School and Community Services. She mentioned students receive the best support when there is collaborative work among departments. (*)5.

SUCCESSFUL PRACTICES AND CHALLENGES There were no successful practices or challenges raised at this time. REPORT FROM THE BOARD At the November 22, 2016 Board Standing Committee meeting trustees received information reports on;      (*)6.

the 2015-2016 Provincial Assessments and Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, the Child Care 2016 Annual Report, the Annual Accessibility Report and Multi-Year Plan, Community Use of Schools, and Annual Enrolment and Staffing. Moved by R. MacAlpine, seconded by M. Tsironikos: That the Special Education Advisory Committee receive the Report from the Board for information. - Carried -

POLICY UPDATES SEAC Chair L. Aversa reminded members to review Board policies and procedures currently out for comment. She mentioned there are policies and procedures which members may wish to review prior to the deadline. These include;      

Staff Members Who Are Candidates for, or Elected to, Public Office, Appointment of Community Members to Board Committees, Environmental Responsibility and Reusable Beverage Containers, Kilometre Allowance, Staff, Trustees and Non-Trustee Committee Members, Student/School Fees, Community Involvement Hours,
