9 week old female needs a forever home

Letter from the Director Dear Loyal Supporters, Your generous support has helped us in our endeavors to do major repairs on the shelter. We were going to start on the section called Boarding with fixing up floors, plexiglass, and walls, but after taking a good look at the outside siding of the front of the building we decided that had to come first. Below are before and after pictures of the repairs.

BEFORE

AFTER

From the Desk of Charlie, Jr. Hi Human Friends, Good news! Honey, Gizmo and Rain, who were featured in our last newsletter, found their forever homes. Once again kitten season is upon us. At last count, the season’s total is 42, and more are coming in almost daily. Please tell your friends and neighbors how important it is for people to spay and neuter their pets. Our in-house repairs are coming along slowly but surely. After all the kitten bins in Watch were finally refinished, our people tackled the old floor vents in the Hospital section which remained after the new heating/ air conditioning system was installed a few years ago. They are now all sealed off...no more cold air coming through. We also refurbished two bins in the Leukemia Building, and the front hallway, closing up the holes left in the walls after the new air conditioning system was installed in Boarding last year and the old ductwork was removed. I say “we” because I am helping (well...supervising). While I was visiting the Leukemia Building the other day to check on the two refurbished bins, Snowball called me. “Come here, Charlie, and have a look at this.” He pointed across the hall to the cats in FIV Gang #1. Mufassa (aka Daddy Lion King - his picture was in our last newsletter) was just kicking a ping pong ball to Lily. She kicked it back to him, and he kicked it across the room to the human caretaker who was scooping the litter boxes. She returned it to him, and he aimed it at Truman who missed it. It ended up between the litterboxes. Mufassa looked at Lily. She walked over to the litterboxes, climbed on top, stuck her little paw behind them, and out came the ball. Looks like they have developed a real team spirit in FIV1 Come and visit us this summer.

HOMES

NEEDED I am happy to say that nine of the cats have found new homes. Below are six more that still need new homes. The remaining three are either feral or (as in one case) a wee bit too much for the average home.

In our last newsletter Charlie mentioned that a previous caretaker, Mike Stevens, passed away and we took in his 18 cats who needed new homes.

A cat wags its tail when it is in a stage of conflict. The cat wants to do two things at once, but each impulse blocks the other. For example: If your cat is in the doorway wanting to go outside, and you open the door to find it raining, the cat’s tail will wag because of internal conflict. The cat wants to go outside, but doesn’t want to go into the rain. Once the cat makes a decision and either returns to the house or leaves into the rain, the tail will immediately stop wagging.

Your cat loves you and can “read” your moods. If you’re sad or under stress, you may also notice a difference in your cat’s behavior. The domestic cat is the only cat species able to hold its tail vertically while walking. All wild cats hold their tails horizontally or tucked between their legs while walking. An average cat has 1-8 kittens per litter, and 2-3 litters per year. During her productive life, one female cat could have more than 100 kittens. In 1952, a Texas Tabby named Dusty set the record by having more than 420 kittens before having her last litter at age 18. A single pair of cats and their kittens can produce as many as 420,000 kittens in just 7 years.

Cat Facts 25% of cat owners blow dry their cats hair after a bath

The largest known litter (with all surviving) was that of a Persian in South Africa named Bluebell. Bluebell gave birth to 14 kittens in one litter!

The largest cat breed is the Ragdoll. Males weigh twelve to twenty pounds, with females weighing ten to fifteen pounds. The smallest cat breed is the Singapura. Males weigh about six pounds while females weigh about four pounds.

More than 35,000 kittens are born in the U.S. each year. Spay or neuter your cat. 5Juliet
