Pioneer Center Youth Programs Who we are... Pioneer Center Youth Programs (PCYP) is the educational outreach division of the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, northern Nevada’s premier performing arts facility. Our programs are available to all public libraries and elementary schools throughout northwestern Nevada.

About our programs… PCYP performances are designed to educate, entertain, and enlighten elementary-age children through interactive performing arts presentations. School programs are set up in two back-to-back assemblies: a 30-minute assembly for primary grades and a 40-minute assembly for intermediate grades. Public library performances run 60 minutes in length. At the end of the performances, we ask that teachers, librarians, parents, and children complete an evaluation form. This form is used as a tool for future programming and for grant funding consideration.

Affordable prices… The cost of for schools and libraries in the immediate Reno-Sparks area is $200. The cost for schools and libraries in outlying communities is $250.

Pioneer Center Youth Programs Artist Roster 2016 - 2017

Brüka’s Theatre for Children Local Artists Brüka’s Theatre for Children - Grimm VIII - “THE BREMEN TOWN MUSCIANS.” This amusing story by the Brothers Grimm is about four farm animals, no longer needed by their masters, who are convinced they can earn a good living as musicians, leave their homes, and finally pursue their dreams. Originally published in 1819, themes within the show are the need for freedom, companionship, following your dreams, and caring for others. Brüka brings different styles of theatre and participation into the performances so that audiences are exposed to a deeper understanding of the story and theatrical presentations. Brüka Theatre has been presenting live theatre in our community for 24 years. This touring production features the Brüka ensemble who bring the story to life with a small set of props and costumes. It is a live theatre performance incorporating physical theatrics, improvisation, and audience interaction. Children are invited to participate in the creation of each performance, ensuring that every show is unique. Funny and insightful, this theatre troupe features top-notch performers and writers who consistently involve young people in learning and participating in theatre and related arts. March through June 2017

Erika Paul Trio Local Artists Over a century of American jazz music comes alive! This entertaining and educational trio draws upon a large repertoire of jazz, from its New Orleans and ragtime beginnings to the instrumental and vocal styles composed by some of history's most famous and prolific jazz artists. Children will be delighted by the wide range of songs from dixieland, the blues, swing, bebop, hardbop, latin jazz, fusion, and more. Erika plays the piano, sings, and narrates this introduction to jazz, together with Gary Douglas on acoustic bass and Dave Riegert on drums. Career musician, singer/songwriter, and certified music instructor Erika Paul weaves fun and informative stories, interactive age-appropriate activities, and simple songwriting skills with lots of call and response to inspire spontaneity, creativity, and "all that jazz." Original songs from Erika's award-winning children's interactive jazz CD, "Scat's My Bag," are also featured in the program, sharing inspiring stories of fictional young artists who follow the call of jazz and music education as a lifetime passion, career, or just for fun. Global Heat Touring Artists Rhymes & Beats: Playing with Words When Rhythm Counts! How do poets and songwriters create lyrics that bring forth vivid emotions and images in listeners of all ages? Join members of Global Heat for an engaging interactive performance of fun, youth-oriented songs. You’ll hear about their experiences as lyricists, hip hop rappers and musicians. You’ll help the band spontaneously create new lyrics and songs, and try out your own “free-styling”. How can you tap your intuition and free expression to start a new piece? What inspires you? What are the roots of contemporary lyricists and how do rhymes relate to the beat? What’s ‘free-styling’ and how can you learn to do it? This program is available as an assembly performance, demo/workshop, or a mix tailored to your youth audience. Since 2006, Global Heat members have toured the U.S. and SE Asia presenting their engaging shows at concerts, festivals, and more than 500 school programs. In-Tune Tales Local Artists Exploring the rich tradition of the spoken word combined with music and song, In-Tune Tales performances encourage children to develop their verbal, interactive, and attention skills — to use their imaginations and their minds. This talented and engaging trio performs songs and spoken word stories along with an organically-created “soundtrack” using upright bass, guitar, violin, and vocals. Traditional folk tales from a variety of world cultures and modern classics by Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss are all brought to life with music, song, lyrics, and musical sound effects to create “Metaphors for Life.” This warm, humorous performance focuses on storytelling as a folk art, with live musical accompaniment all performed in the moment. Group leader and lifelong musician Scot Marshall has worked as an entertainer since the age of 15. He learned the rich art of storytelling from his grandmother, who traveled with Chautauqua from 1916 to 1918. Scot is joined by his son Graham Marshall on violin and career musician Ron Savage on piano. January through June 2017

In-Tune Tales Presents “The Grinch” Local Artists Bring the magic of the holiday season to life with spoken word storytelling, music, and song! In this special program, the In-Tune Tales trio will perform classic holiday stories and songs in an acoustic setting with upright bass, violin, guitar, and vocals. The centerpiece of the holiday program is the beloved Dr. Seuss classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” told in its entirety with spoken word, songs, and musical sound effects. The program will also feature several classic holiday songs performed in jazz, pop, and bluegrass styles and a sing-along for “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.” This special limited-time holiday program is an annual favorite for adults and children alike. Group leader and lifelong musician Scot Marshall has worked as an entertainer since the age of 15. Larry Wilson Local Artist Direct from TV, magician Larry Wilson returns once again with an entirely new program of mind-blowing magic illustrating the scientific principles that make his illusions possible. His popularity in northern Nevada schools has compelled Larry to create a completely new array of amazing demonstrations of unbelievable magic which can always be explained by science. Larry performs magic tricks using student volunteers in direct, hands-on learning applications. As astounding as these tricks may be, the secrets behind them are often more incredible. Under Larry’s master tutelage, the most bewildering magic will be broken down into easy-to follow steps that students can re-create at home with common household items like pencils, rubber bands, paper clips, and string. The accompanying curriculum guide Larry has compiled for educators provides a wealth of practical lessons in magic and history, magic and art, magic and science, magic and literature, and even magic and mathematics. Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company Touring Artists Share this exciting world of professional contemporary dance! The members of Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company bring their interactive, educational dance program to Reno for one week only. Ririe-Woodbury is committed to producing innovative, moving, and compelling work that challenges audience perceptions of what contemporary dance can be. During their performance demonstrations, the Company’s Education Director narrates while their six skilled dancers perform excerpts from the Company’s contemporary repertory to illustrate the dance principals of space, shape, time, and motion. Based in Salt Lake City, Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company is dedicated to presenting contemporary dance to audiences all over the world. Known for creating dance performances that are accessible for families and young audiences, the company seeks to promote personal connections to dance, both through performances and educational opportunities.” Monday, October 31 through Saturday, November 5, 2016 Limited availability—book early!

Tim Snider and House of Waters Touring Artists Tim Snider has traveled to Cuba, Morocco, Spain, Indonesia, Brazil, and much of Europe and Central America in his ongoing journey to study the world’s different styles of music. Tim is teaming up with the Brooklyn-based band House of Waters for the second year in a row. House of Waters consists of hammered dulcimer virtuoso Max ZT, master percussionist Ignacio Bixio, and brilliant bassist Moto Fukushima: three innovative musicians who are redefining their instruments. This group offers audiences of all ages a well-rounded and energetic exploration of the world’s music and its fusion with American music and culture. Imagine combining classical violin with Cuban rhythms, or hammered dulcimer with African-influenced beats! Tim Snider and House of Waters does all this and so much more in an engaging, easy-to-grasp format. This fun and exciting program also teaches values such as communication, listening, focus, open-mindedness, and patience all in a way that will inspire and leave audiences wanting more. Pioneer Center Youth Programs Program Order Form Email your order to [email protected] When scheduling your programs, please remember:  For locations in the immediate Reno-Sparks vicinity, the cost of the programs is $200. For locations outside

the Reno-Sparks area, the cost is $250. An invoice will be generated after your booking request is confirmed.  Regular booking dates are SEPTEMBER 2016 through JUNE 2017. Some artists are available only certain



  

dates. Check the Artist Availability sheet before requesting an artist. Take into consideration holidays, vacations, school testing dates, and any other applicable scheduling conflicts. Please make sure you mark the CONFIRMED booking date and time on your master calendar. Each school booking consists of two back-to-back programs: 30 minutes for primary grades and 40 minutes for intermediate grades. Please schedule approximately 15 minutes between these back-to-back programs. An example for a morning booking would be: 9:30am for primary and 10:15am for intermediate. An example for an afternoon booking would be: 1:30pm for primary and 2:15pm for intermediate. Each public library booking consists of one 60 minute program. Library bookings are available in the morning, afternoon, or evening, seven days a week. Artists usually have their own equipment and only need to schedule set-up/break-down time. Artists will be in direct contact with you to arrange these times, as well as explain any special requirements they may have. Our programs are supported by several grants. In order that we continue to receive grant monies, we are required to evaluate our programs. Evaluation forms will be provided. We appreciate you mailing these forms back to the Pioneer Center soon after the program is completed. ARTIST
