25 Years Strong

We say “thank you” Over 25 years, the contribution that the Mount Scopus Foundation has made to the learning and the lives of our students has been phenomenal. Without the Foundation’s support, the College would truly be a very different place. Not only have the supporters of the Foundation enabled us to create new state-of-the-art buildings, providing environments where we can teach children in the way that they learn, but it has helped us develop educational programmes that truly realise the potential of each child’s personality - from drama and music right through to the horticultural and culinary skills that are grown in our Kitchen Garden.

The Foundation’s impact extends beyond even the physical fabric of the school. The bursaries provided to participants in our Ulpan programme have given ever increasing numbers of our students a life-changing Israel experience, connecting them with the past, present and future of the State of Israel. And by raising funds directly targeted at fee relief, the Foundation’s supporters have given so many more children the chance of a Jewish Education, a Scopus Education. For twenty five years of helping our children, we say “thank you” to Solomon Lew, Henry Lanzer, all Executive members and all the supporters.

25 Years Strong Chairman Solomon Lew

President

When I agreed to become the Chairman of the Mount Scopus College Foundation it was with a deep desire to make a difference to my school, and that of my children, and understanding the importance of a strong and successful Scopus. And now, 25 years later and with my grandchildren at the College, I know the great impact our Foundation supporters have made and I feel very proud.

I invite you to review this year’s Annual Report which showcases 25 years of the Mount Scopus College Foundation. It also includes personal messages from many of those who have been involved. Whilst recalling the past, it also focuses very much on the present and the difference our supporters have made.

Henry Lanzer

..the Foundation Foundation has helped shape our College, which would be a very different place...

I have been privileged to work alongside the best and I take this opportunity to thank former Presidents David Smorgon and Dug Pomeroy. For the past 16 years, the Foundation has been blessed to have Henry Lanzer as its tireless President. With the support of Janette and his family, Henry has committed extraordinary amounts of time and expertise to progress the Foundation and the College. His dedication is unparalleled and thousands of students have reaped the rewards of his efforts. I take this opportunity to also note the contributions of the first Vice- Presidents, the late Leon Liberman together with Roy Tashi, who has also dedicated 25 years to the Foundation. And a warm and sincere thank you to everybody who has been involved in any way. My appreciation goes to past Executive members and to the current, comprising Vice-Presidents Sam Alter and Stewart Baron together with Paul Bassat, Joey Borensztajn, Russell Casper, David Gold, Jack Hansky, Ricky Smorgon, Roy Tashi and Executive Director, Marilyn Simon. To our supporters, the most generous donors of more than $41 million, know that you have made a difference not just to Scopus but to the strength and vitality of our community. There is still so much more to do and we are counting on your continuing involvement.

I am delighted to acknowledge that since 1987, the Foundation has raised more than $41 million. Over the past 25 years, the Foundation has helped shape our College, which would be a very different place without its financial support and the counsel of its leaders. I am proud to have been the Foundation President since 1996 and feel privileged to have worked with dedicated volunteers, many of them long-serving.

. ..you have made a difference not just to Scopus but to the strength and vitality of our community...

At the helm of our Foundation, since its inception, has been our Chairman, Solomon Lew. The power and constancy of Sol’s leadership and guidance has ensured that the Foundation does what it was created to do, namely to secure the school’s future. In addition, the support of the entire Lew family has helped us to achieve so many of our goals. The Foundation’s influence is felt far and wide. Over 25 years it has raised and distributed funds for the redevelopment of our school’s facilities at every campus, as well as for needs-based bursaries, programs, Israel experience assistance, fee relief, scholarships, the kitchen garden project, implementation of the International Baccalaureate Programme and advances in technology. The photos in this Report capture our students enjoying ‘life’ at Scopus, that ‘life’ significantly enhanced by our generous donors. So please join me in congratulating all who have contributed to the success of the last 25 years – leaders, volunteers and benefactors – for their vision and for their commitment. Let us proudly celebrate ‘25 Years Strong’. At the same time, let us honour the past by continuing our support so that our children and grandchildren may enjoy the opportunities that enable them to grow into strong and contributing members of our community.

Kol Hakavod! We both recall the passion, hope and efforts of the College leadership when it created the vision for the Mount Scopus College Foundation. It was born out of the realisation that Mount Scopus had achieved an extraordinary record of success over its first 40 years, but in order to secure the College’s long-term future, fundraising had to be approached very differently. Despite what turned out to be the very challenging timing of its launch, the Foundation’s immediate success had a profound impact on the school’s opportunities. And continued campaigns have recorded more and more successes - resulting in new facilities, new programmes and a stronger community of parents, staff, students and Old Collegians. Although we are both no longer in Melbourne Steve in Jewish education in the USA and Garry living in Israel - we continue to follow Mount Scopus’ progress with great pride and gratification. We know full well that this success is due in no small part to the energy and commitment of many volunteers and the generosity of supporters. A special Mazal Tov to inaugural Chairman, Solomon Lew for 25 years of leadership, and to President, Henry Lanzer for his immense contribution since 1996. And to everybody who has been involved in some way, Kol Hakavod!

25 Years Strong Leave your Legacy by creating a gift in your Will for the students of Mount Scopus College A Bequest is one of the simplest ways to show your support and perhaps at a level not possible during your lifetime.

Will your Bequest make a difference? Most definitely. Every Bequest, large or small, will make a unique contribution to our students, the school, and ultimately, to our community. Thoughtful and significant Bequests recently have created the Helene and Paul Kohn Bursaries and the Herta and Roman Scherer Bursaries and will be their everlasting legacies.

Since 1987, The Foundation has gratefully received $2,500,000 from Bequests. We express our heartfelt appreciation to the people from whose Estate the College has benefited and to those who have recently included Mount Scopus College as a beneficiary in their Will. If you are considering making Mount Scopus College a beneficiary of your Estate in any way, please call Marilyn Simon, Foundation Executive Director, who will welcome your confidential enquiry and provide the correct wording for insertion in your Will, or perhaps suggest a solicitor. It is our pleasure, when advised of a proposed Bequest, to acknowledge and honour the donor during their lifetime. For any information please call Marilyn Simon on (03) 9834 0033.

May their memory be a blessing The Foundation notes with sadness the passing over the last year of Dr Jack Goldberg.

How do you make a Bequest to Scopus? After considering the needs of your family, we encourage you to provide for our future by making Scopus a beneficiary of your Will. Adding a codicil to an existing Will may be the easiest option. We suggest you consult your solicitor or ask us for assistance.

What form may your Bequest take? - A specific sum of money - A percentage of your Estate or the residue of your Estate - A specific asset, such as property or shares - Articles of value, such as art work

How will your Bequest be used? Unless you direct otherwise, your Bequest will be managed by the Mount Scopus College Foundation which provides for - subsidised tuition fees for students who would otherwise be excluded - scholarships - additional programs - development of facilities or you may identify a specific purpose.

Should you advise your intentions?

We gratefully acknowledge the Bequests of: Anna Brown Harriet Gordon Sister Joyce Hehir; Trustee, Jack Goldberg Mendel Herszfeld Helen and Richard Kohn Hilda and Izrael Kozlowski Hirsh Light Hanna Moszkowska Estate of Julia Feitel Pearl Lola Silberthau Estate of Elizabeth and Nicholas Slezak Aaron Arthur Smith; Executors Thelma Meerkin and Edward Rahill Herbert Tisher Ludwik Weisz Vica and Mitia Yavitch Harry Betan in memory of the Family Betansky of London Rose Rosanove Alwyn Ruta Samuel Herta and Roman Scherer Helene and Paul Kohn

By informing us, we are able to show our appreciation during your lifetime, and perhaps work with you to decide the direction for your Bequest. All Bequests are acknowledged on our Bequest Honour Board and in the Foundation Annual Report.

25 Years Strong Mount Scopus College Foundation

Many attractive dedication opportunities are available to honour your family.

Mazal Tov and thank you!

Why was the Mount Scopus College Foundation established? Created in 1987, it is responsible for major fundraising to advance the College. Through the generosity of its members, it has raised pledges in excess of $41,000,000. Bequests are also warmly welcomed. Funds have been applied to campus renewal, an endowment fund, tuition fee relief, debt reduction and various programs. Without Foundation support the College would be unable to provide new facilities.

How is it managed? The goals of the Foundation are pursued by an Executive Committee in consultation with the Principal, College President and College Executive.

25 years ago, in the lead up to the gala launch of the Foundation, I was a volunteer in the Development Office, assisting Dr Jim Myers, Director of Development. I recall making phone calls to urge invitees to attend and also the excitement and the anticipation, tempered a little by the fear of the unknown. After all, this was a ground-breaking development for the Melbourne Jewish Community, not just for Scopus. Despite the stock market crash, the success of the event and the birth of the Foundation delivered an overwhelming feeling of achievement. And it raised the bar for communal fundraising.

The Chairman of the Foundation, since inception, is Solomon Lew and the current President, Henry Lanzer, was appointed in 1996 at which time Marilyn Simon assumed the role of the Executive Director.

Members include corporations, individuals and families at every level and from every sector of the community. Classifications of membership are dependent on gift level. Entry level requires a pledge of $20,000 which may be paid over a term. There are always opportunities to match a donor’s area of interest with the school’s needs.

This celebratory edition of our Report highlights many Scopus achievements and progress that have only eventuated because of the Foundation’s collective support. Please consider the significant impact of so many generous benefactors and equally generous volunteers over 25 years. More importantly, please consider how you can be a part of the next 25 years. I would be delighted to show you the way.

Who can be members?

In 1996, Solomon Lew had already served 9 years as Chairman when Henry Lanzer was appointed as Foundation President and I undertook the role to assist them. I feel so privileged to have been a part of an amazing team for more than 16 years. I am in awe of the commitment and dedication displayed by Sol, Henry and all Executive members as they work for Scopus. It is especially inspiring when you realise that many have been involved for decades. As have many of our supporters, for which we are sincerely grateful. Notwithstanding, it is most encouraging that the next generation is now taking its place as volunteers and donors alike.
